Flicka
(Rated PG, available Feb. 6, for ages 8-14): This horse movie was a nag at the box office last fall, lumbering for a $21 million domestic haul. The DVD also isn't up to scratch, though a smaller screen is better suited for this TV movie of the week-esque story. This bland remake of the 1943 film starring a young Roddy McDowell flips things around to where it's now a girl who tries to convince her father that she has what it takes to run the family ranch in Wyoming. GRADE: C

Open Season
(Rated PG, for ages 4-8): In this middling tale starring animated nature friends, a domesticated grizzly bear sounding exactly like Martin Lawrence is sent back into the wild when he is "freed" by a motor-mouth mule deer (Ashton Kutcher) who's just trying to help. GRADE: C+

It's a Big Big World
(not rated, available Jan. 30, for ages 3-5): Two individually sold volumes of the PBS series encourages preschoolers to be curious about the world around them, though the show itself is set in an exotic rainforest inhabited by strange animals, the leader being an energetic tree sloth named Snook. "Investigate Your World" and "The Sky Above" will both captivate youngsters, who will have too much fun to realize they're learning science and geography. GRADE: A

The Wubulous World of Dr. Seuss
(not rated, for ages 3-5): The three episodes in this DVD - the eighth in a series - are nearly a decade old, but even in the fickle world of children's television, the old Nickelodeon show combining Jim Henson's puppet magic and 3-D computer animation still holds up. GRADE: B
