See sensational Dana Point orca footage

This rare sight has made national headlines; see footage shot by Dana Wharf

By Susan BelknappPublished: June, 2010

Killer whales in Dana Point are rare, but watching a family of orca whales feed off their kill added to the excitement Tuesday, when the this pod of about eight batted around a large sea lion or small elephant seal (not sure which!). Fortunately, the experts at Dana Wharf were right there and caught this incredible footage.

It is a scene right out of "Planet Earth," when local whale watchers got up close and personal with nature as the adult orcas taught their babies survival skills in the oceans off of Dana Point.

This video, which lasts a little more than six minutes rivals Sea World, with the whales jumping, presenting and talking. Check out at about 3:00, where they come very close to the boats and seem to "talk" to the spectators.

Sightings of orcas in Southern California tend to be rare, however, eight have been noted in the last two months between Los Angeles and Orange County.

If you were wondering what to do this weekend, call Dana Wharf to schedule your adventure, contact danawharf.com or call 949.496.5794.
