![]() Like with public schools, college budgets have been stripped to the bare minimum, with tuition and fees increasing exponentially. Technology is one of the true values we have on our side during this budget crisis. Things such as up-to-date encyclopedias, which may have cost thousands of dollars in the past, are now available online or on your mobile device for a few dollars. In the August issue of OC Family, we feature some great educational iPhone applications. There are also quite a few that will come in handy for the college student who is away from home for the first time Here’s just a few free web apps every college student should know about: • Hipcal.com – a free personal scheduling program that enables your student to plan classes, study time, and social calendar with ease • Skype – a free video phone service that allows you to video chat your grad live • Comparemydocs.com – an advanced Track Changes, this service helps students collaborate on documents by giving them the freedom to send out the same document to everyone in the group at one time, upload each version they send back, and then compare everyone’s contribution simultaneously in one view • Easybib.com – automatic bibliography and citation maker enables students to plug in their term paper sources and out comes the Works Cited page in a Microsoft Word document • Notemesh.com – a “Wikipedia for your notes” service allows students to login and compare notes with other students in the same class, or post their notes to help others |
