Teens Against Cancer takes stage June 25

The 2010 Variety Show benefits pediatric cancer patients.

By Susan BelknappPublished: June, 2010

While many teens are busy planning for their summer vacation, volunteers for Teens Against Cancer are immersed in rehearsals to put the final touches on their 2010 Teen Variety Show, which will be held Friday, June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Marsee Auditorium at El Camino College in Torrance.

Over 100 teens from seven local high schools have united to organize and produce the show with the goal of created fun, compelling entertainment for all ages. The show will incorporate: choreo dance, Tahitian dance, modern dance, Korean dance, salsa dance, ballet, band, various singing groups, classical piano and violin, reggae band, a musical play, choir, and much more.

Teens Against Cancer was formed eight years ago when Jennifer Matsui wanted to do something for her young cousin, Derek Hoffman, who was fighting cancer. For Matsui’s 10th birthday wish, she asked her parents to let her have a small fundraiser luncheon.

They raised $620 for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where Derek was receiving chemotherapy. Sadly, Derek only knew about this one fundraiser. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 8.

The cancer took away her favorite cousin but it did not take away Jennifer’s love for Derek – especially toward the end of his life. She saw how strong Derek was even though his body was slowly deteriorating. It was Derek’s courage that inspired Jennifer to form Teens Against Cancer.

This dedicated group of teens truly cares about making a difference in the lives of pediatric cancer patients, so they might experience joy in the moment and have hope for the future.

Tickets for the 2010 Teen Variety Show can be purchased through El Camino College box office at 800.832.2787. Admission is $10.

There will be raffle prizes before the show and the winner will be announced during intermission. All proceeds go to various pediatric cancer charities: M.D. Anderson Rhabdomyosarcoma Cancer Research Fund (the Derek Hoffman Fund), M.D. Anderson Pediatric Reading Program, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
