Disney celebrates Earth Day

Internationally renowned artist Wyland will create a painting and there will be a beneficial bug release at Disney’s California Adventure.

By Susan BelknappPublished: April, 2010

The Happiest Place on Earth is cleaning up its act. Actually, Disney has frequently been named one of the greenest companies in Orange County. To further this deserved reputation, Downtown Disney and California Adventure will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on Thursday.

At 9 a.m., nearly 100 school children will release ladybugs for the benefit of the environment in A Bug’s Land inside Disney’s California Adventure in a beneficial bug release.

At 10 a.m., internationally acclaimed marine life artist and muralist Wyland will create a painting in front of a Downtown Disney audience. Local students in attendance will be able to paint and experience Wyland’s Clean Water Mobile – an interactive center that educates students about water conservation.

Earth Day: Disneynature’s debuts ‘Oceans’
Special digital engagement opens Thursday and runs through May 23 at the El Capitan Theatre.

The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, with the debut of “Oceans,” a new film from Disneynature, the studio that presented the record-breaking film “Earth.”

Water covers nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface, yet human beings have seen less than 5 percent of the oceans.

Narrated by Pierce Brosnan, Disneynature’s OCEANS takes the viewer on an extraordinary adventure under the surface, where we see incredible creatures with never-before-seen footage. The film will run from from April 22nd through May 23rd.

At every showing of “Oceans,” the Wildlife Learning Center (WLC) will showcase a handful of exotic animals in their care with the “Exotic Animals From Around the World,” presentation live on the El Capitan Stage.

The “Animal Guys” from the WLC have rescued more than 70 different species of captive-born wild animals and make it their mission to get children excited about the natural world around them. The Wildlife Learning Center also wants to help educate a generation of children to value their natural heritage, to value the environment, and to value all living things.

Daily show times are: 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. Tickets are available at the El Capitan Theatre box office online at elcapitantickets.com or by calling 1.800.DISNEY6. Special group rates for parties of 20 or more are available by calling 1.818.845.3110.
