Great idea!

O.C. students competed Jan. 30 and 31 at the 23rd annual Astounding Inventions competition at Irvine Valley College.

  • Irvine Valley College (IVC) hosted its 23rd annual Astounding Inventions Jan. 30 and 31 at the campus. Approximately 350 students from Irvine Unified and Tustin Unified School Districts competed for $9,000 in cash prizes, certificates of achievement and ribbons from the Irvine Valley College Foundation.  

    Participants submitted a written description and illustration of their idea. The inventions were then grouped by grade level and judged on originality and potential usefulness. Standouts included Grant Roess (pictured), inventor of the Scooter Pad.

    In addition: Evan Kim, 5th Grade from Santiago Hills in Irvine invented Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow for cleaning up after his dog.  David Luoma, 5th grade from Plaza Vista , a twin invented Easy Put on Pouch to carry important things in a belt – his twin Any invented the Follow Me Cart and Anna Shipcott 3rd grade from Tustin Memorial Academy invented the Bee Sting Relief Kit – a pocket size kit to be prepared in the event of a bee sting.

    IVC faculty presented at the event including, Professors George Brogan, Ilkner Erbas-White, Rich Zucker, Dale Carranza and Kiana Tabibzadeh.  

    During the ceremonies: platform members included, Don Wagner, South Orange County Community College District board president, Scinto and Lynn Davis, Tustin Unified School Francine board members, Carolyn McInerney,  Irvine Unified School board member and Sukee Kang, mayor of Irvine.  
    Greenberg Traurig LLP and the Irvine Valley College Foundation produced the event.

    Other major sponsors include: Rosemount Analytical, SRS Labs, AT&T, Cox Communications, Irvine Ranch Water District, Iwamoto Kong, Klein O'Neill & Singh, Micromachines and Wells Fargo.
