![]() In DI, teams are tested to think on their feet, work together and devise original solutions that satisfy the requirements of a Central Challenge (which is worked on for about six months). Additionally, there is a super secretive Instant Challenge that the kids are introduced to and have to solve in just minutes. Participants are not allowed to have any parent help with their solution, which makes the solutions very interesting to watch. In the state competition, which was held April 10, the team faced 14 others in their division to battle for two top seats to represent California at the global competition in May. With solid scores on their Central Challenge which incorporated a and another impressive 2nd place finish on the Instant Challenge, The Don Juan DInomites were crowned State Champions. Now they go to Tennessee to compete against the WORLD. Over 1,000 teams are expected to compete at the DI Globals Tournament, from countries all over the world. “It is an honor to represent Don Juan Avila Elementary, Orange County, CUSD, and the state of California in this prestigious event,” says Rick Wojcicki, team manager. “The kids have worked hard for over six months to get to this point and are excited to move on to the next level.” This is a real bright spot for the kids and Don Juan Avila especially because they are right in the middle of the chaos going on with the CUSD and Teacher’s Union strike. “The kids came to school today crossing picket lines to get on campus,” says Wojcicki. “They have little understanding of what is going on and that is really how it should be. If it were up to me, I would give these kids the challenge on how to solve this school crisis issue within five minutes and I feel they would be creative enough to do it.” Now it’s time to raise funds to help get these kids get to Knoxville for a four-day long tournament. The estimated cost per person will be $2,700, so we are hoping to find some support from the community. And the team is off to a great start. A ChipIn account has been created where supporters can donate diretly at donjuanDI.chipin.com or they can follow us on facebook and see our progress at facebook.com/donjuanDInomites On May 18, there will be a family fundraising dinner night at Cosmos in Aliso Viejo where many community donated gifts will be raffled off from companies such as Azarian Gymnastics, Soka University, Renaissance ClubSport and Trader Joes, for starters. On May 19, the Don Juan DInomites have been invited to the bity of Aliso Viejo to be acknowledge by the mayor and city council members.
