Crean Lutheran South High School (CLS), an affiliate of the Pacific Southwest District, which includes Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, broke ground Sunday on the first phase of a planned 30-acre campus adjacent to the Stonegate development in the city of Irvine.

Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang and members of the CLS senior class, the school's board of directors, faculty, lenders and design and construction representatives took turns breaking ground as part of a one-hour ceremony at the site, located at the corner of Sand Canyon Ave. and Portola Pkwy.

This will be the first Lutheran high school built in Orange County in more than 35 years and the first Christian high school in Irvine.

Crean Lutheran South High School has operated in an education building on the St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church campus in Orange since its inception in August 2007. In January, city planners approved the initial development of 18 acres of a planned 30-acre build-out.

Phase One is scheduled to open in the fall with 450 students and will gradually build out until it reaches and estimated 1,200 students over the next several years.

“Crean Lutheran South High School has established a strong foundation of leadership, impressive teacher quality and a clear sense of purpose,” says Dr. David Brown, executive director of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Phase One of the campus, estimated to cost $44 million, is scheduled to open Fall 2010. The total cost is budgeted at about $90 million once build out is completed over the next several years.

Lutheran Church Extension Fund, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Farmers & Merchants Bank have contributed to the funding.
