The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County is sponsoring a Big Surf Event this Sunday in Newport Beach from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Clinic will be held at Seashore Drive and Nordina Street. Organized by board member Kelly Johnston and Erik “Frog” Nelsen of the Roxy/Quicksilver Surf Camp, the day will bring together “Bigs” (volunteer Big Brothers/Sisters) and “Littles,” the kids they mentor. The Littles will learn to surf; Bigs will be there to cheer them on and lend a hand as Nelsen and his team of instructors donate their time and talents to the event. Littles must be at least 9 and know how to swim to participate. Nelsen has run his surf camp for more than 25 years and has taught upwards of 5,000 students how to surf safely and with confidence while learning valuable lessons about ocean awareness and ocean safety. Surfboards, wetsuits and breakfast will be provided. Space is limited; RSVP to as attar@bigbrooc.org
