Irvine Public Schools Foundation seeks to reach year-end goal to raise $500k

VIZIO and local band put on holiday show fundraiser

NIcole LyonsPublished: December, 2011

Two Hometown Holiday shows will be put on at The Galaxy in Santa Ana by Irvine-based VIZIO and local band, Young the Giant, to benefit the Irvine Public School Foundation (IPSF).

Four Irvine public high schools were challenged by VIZIO and the IPSF to shoot a music video style PSA to the band’s song, “Cough Syrup.” The public voted on the video submissions and a panel of judges from VIZIO and IPSF will decide from the top two finalists. The winning school will be announced Dec. 14 and is given tickets to attend the Hometown Holiday show on Saturday, Dec. 17 and $10,000 in VIZIO technology equipment. Both concerts are sold out.

And with three weeks remaining until the end of IPSF’s 2011 annual campaign that began in October, hopefully the Hometown Holiday concerts will get IPSF closer to its goal to raise $500,000. The target was set to help Irvine Unified School District’s 28,000 students. All money raised is to reduce class sizes in middle and high schools and to provide small group instruction at elementary school level.

The campaign is at 70 percent of its stated goal. And through the City of Irvine’s challenge grant, every donation to the foundation will be matched, which could result in $1 million helping fund Irvine classrooms, if IPSF accomplishes its goal.

Alderwood Elementary parents Christian Thiim and Sumana Yeturu were among the first donors to this year’s campaign.  “We have chosen to support IPSF because of their chosen mission, namely providing opportunities and resources for all children of Irvine,” said Thiim.  “We feel these resources will provide both immediate and long lasting benefits for our children and our community.”
