Girl powerEmpowering new website“Girl Power!” is more than a catchy slogan from the mid-1990s. It also encompasses a new wave of female empowerment. And web visionaries Girls Choice Inc. and The Family Groove are working toward renewed “Girl Power!” Girls Choice Inc. is a female-owned company that provides age-appropriate web material for young girls, ages 7-12. Soon, the website will be accompanied by a monthly magazine, Girls Choice Magazine. Topics include art, culture, fashion, sports, wellness and school. It offers a healthy outlet for young girls to explore their identity and develop life goals, and it encourages girls to be girls. The Family Groove’s goal is to help parents raise successful children in today’s culture. The website is geared toward “the modern woman,” with topics ranging from lifestyle and home to the “bump” watch. These 2 femme-focused organizations are collaborating to protect young women. Advertisers, movies, TV shows and magazines pressure girls to grow up faster than they should. Girls Choice Inc. and The Family Groove are working to reclaim the female image. Character development, self-awareness and education are the primary components in putting the “girl back into power!” For more information, check out both these websites at girlschoiceinc.com and thefamilygroove.com. By Kathleen Crain Brush up On childhood literacyColgate-Palmolive has teamed up with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) to promote childhood literacy. (RIF is the nation’s oldest and largest children’s literacy program.) Since 1966, RIF has been teaming with children, their parents and the community in an effort to make reading an everyday activity. RIF services 4.5 million children nationwide and focuses on providing reading material to low-income children, ages birth to 8.Since 2004, Colgate has provided $800,000 worth of books and bilingual supplies to children across the country. Through their collaboration, Colgate hopes that children will not only make reading part of their daily ritual, but hygienic habits, such as washing hands and brushing teeth, part of their routine, as well. Colgate has started an online Healthy Bedtime Habits Program for kids and their parents. The interactive course includes games, stories, activities, prizes and a parent message board to help families make nighttime habits fun. The games, stories and activities are part of an online journal that tracks the child’s nightly hygiene. At the end of the course, the child earns prizes and rewards. The tactile program seeks to jump-start childhood hygiene and lay the foundation for healthy adulthood. For details, go to Colgate’s website at colgatehealthyhabits.com. By Kathleen Crain |
