The recently announced alliance will combine resources to offer improved patient care, as well as more complete facilities for pediatric research and education. Within three years UC Irvine medical students will begin rotating through CHOC as a training site. More pediatric beds will be available to O.C. children, including more pediatric intensive care and neonatal intensive care beds. When complete, the new facility is also expected to aid in the recruitment of the country’s best physicians to the area. Fairmont Debate Team wins big Debate teams from Fairmont Private Schools’ Anaheim Hills campus and Fairmont’s Preparatory Academy won several honors at the recent St. Mark’s Episcopal Showdown. Rosie Kaur was awarded the second place Overall Speaker Award out of some 70 speakers. Fairmont Prep’s junior high team won third place Overall School and the third place Tournament Award. Breakout teams Sonali Nayak and Allison Cheung placed seventh in the individual team competition. Rosie Kaur and Grace Hsieh placed eigth in that same category. The teams competed with more than 20 other teams. Local milk named America's best O.C.-based Stremicks Heritage Foods Organic Milk has been named the “Best Tasting Organic Milk in America” by the American Masters of Taste. In a triple-blind taste test, executive chefs from around the country found Stremick’s Heritage Foods Organic Milk to be better tasting than more than 1,000 other national organic brands. Smart shoppers Teach your kids to be savvy consumers with a new resource provided by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). A new FTC Web page offers interactive games and activities that help kids learn key consumer concepts. The site features animated guides who help kids navigate a virtual mall and interact with shopkeepers and other customers. Kids can design and print ads for a shoe store, uncover suspicious claims in an ad, and guess the retail price of various candies based on their supply, demand and production costs. Parents can use the site to teach everyday consumer tips. Online and unsupervised Children are using the Internet without adult supervision, according to a recent poll conducted by Highlights for Children and Glubble, an online activity center for families with children under age 12. More than 500 parents responded to the site’s poll on how their kids access the Internet. Most parents, (77 percent) reported having a conversation with their children about online safety, but as many as 75 percent reported that their child accesses the Internet without supervision. Ducks S.C.O.R.E. big The Anaheim Ducks were recently honored with the statewide Celebrate Literacy Award, presented by the California Reading Association, for its S.C.O.R.E. Reading is the Goal program. Selected from more than 60 nominees throughout California, the Ducks award-winning S.C.O.R.E. program is an in-class education program targeted at fourth-graders that rewards students for spending time reading.
