World Breastfeeding Week

By OC Family staffPublished: August, 2009

A worldwide effort
The first week of August marks the 18th annual World Breastfeeding Week. Since the celebration began nearly two decades ago, the body of research on the benefits of breastfeeding has been growing every day. For baby, these include an easier transition from womb to world, improved emotional and physical development and protection from asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and some childhood cancers. For mom, breastfeeding can help with post-pregnancy weight loss, and it provides her with some protection from breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation: breastfeed for at least one year.

Parent-coach
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, a unique interactive counseling program that coaches parents through a wireless earpiece, is now available in South Orange County. The program helps parents increase their child’s ability to manage frustration, independence, self-control, and listening and social skills. The Child Guidance Center, a nonprofit provider of psychological services and education solutions, now offers the forward-thinking counseling model through its new facility in Mission Viejo.

Pretend City Children’s Museum
The newest children’s museum in O.C., Pretend City, is set to open this month in Irvine. The 28,000-square-foot museum will be the first educational facility in Orange County to represent a miniature city, empowering young children and families to meaningfully connect with and expand their world in a hands-on learning environment. The grand opening culminates years of designing and planning by prominent business and community leaders, educators and philanthropists.

What you’ll find at Pretend City

O.C.’s newest children’s museum offers kids a miniature view of the real world. They’ll find:

> 28,000 square feet of hands-on learning fun
> Costumes and materials that allow children to be any professional they’d like to be
> An interconnected city where every child is a citizen
> And a whole lot more!
