St Joseph deemed 'Baby Friendly'

News you can use

By OC Family staffPublished: July, 2009

St. Joseph Hospital in Orange has received recognition as a Baby-Friendly birth facility. It is the first hospital to achieve the coveted distinction in Orange County.

St. Joseph was recognized by Baby-Friendly USA, a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United States Children’s Fund, for its ongoing efforts to support nursing mothers.

The initiative is part of the worldwide effort to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

The Baby-Friendly designation is given after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the quality processes.

THE BENEFITS OF NURSING

More than two decades of research have established that breast milk is perfectly suited to nourish infants and protect them from illness.

Breast-fed infants have lower rates of hospital admissions, ear infections, diarrhea, rashes, allergies and other medical problems than bottle-fed babies, says the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

TRIPLETS CONVENTION COMES TO O.C.

It’ll be fun times three July 10-12 as the Triplet Connection Convention comes to Orange County.

The event includes the world’s oldest and largest annual gathering of twins, triplets (or more) and features such unique events as the Triplets Parade, the original four-legged race (a version of the three-legged race, but with three multiples tied together) and parent workshops to help parents learn how to better manage exponentially growing families.

SUMMER MEANS 150 PERCENT MORE TV

TV Watch, the national organization that promotes parental controls over increased government regulation of TV
content, reports that summer is when most kids have more access to the TV – some 150 percent more than during the school year.

Spring Clean Your TV is a one-stop resource for parents who want to learn more about how they can take control of the TV content coming into their home. As part of the effort, TV Watch created a comprehensive tutorial along with a set of easy-to-understand videos that explain TV ratings and the V-Chip.
