MOST NEEDY Canyon Acres Cares for OC's Troubled Children In its residential treatment program, Canyon Acres Children and Family Services is a program caring for the most severely abused and emotionally troubled children in Orange County. The 27-year-old nonprofit brings in young children - diagnosed in the RCL 14 level, for having the most acute psychiatric needs - to live full time while they are cared for. The children are given the most educated and specialized staff and services available in the state. They are also supervised 24 hours a day. The 30 children, ages 6-12, live in a former 4.5-acre ranch, surrounded by a beautiful, residential area overlooking Anaheim Hills. The property consists of three homes: two for boys and one for girls. "Eighty-three percent of the children have been in more than six placements," says Executive Director Clete Menke. Canyon Acres serves 200 children through various programs, but focuses most of its $9.2 million annual budget in the residential program. Menke says he stays motivated by the great people he works with. "We have very strong and compassionate people." The facility, mostly funded by the state, is hoping to raise an additional $1.2 million next year through fundraising events and private corporation donations.
