Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free!  It’s all part of Disney Parks’ new campaign that taps into the newly identified family travel trend called “celebration vacations.”

It seems American families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations – with a “celebration vacation.” In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will help guests turn their milestones into magical experiences. To kick it all off – a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket on their birthday. disneyparks.com

Indian Guides really clean up
A local Indian Guides tribe known as Dolphin Nation recently did its part to keep O.C. clean.  More than 250 boys, ages 5 to 11, along with their fathers, family and friends, set their sights on the Newport Pier last month for the huge cleanup effort.

Working together they not only cleaned up the beach, the tribe raised money for SOS (shareourselves.org) and the Central Orange Coast Branch of the YMCA.

Literacy Lunch teams with Zpizza
Annie Winston, author of “Heroical Storicals” and one of OC Family’s Mom’s Who Rock, (November issue) has teamed up with ZPizza in Irvine to launch Literacy Lunch, an innovative fundraiser for O.C. school libraries. Zpizza is an award-winning Newport Beach-based gourmet pizza restaurant with more than 40 locations nationwide.

During the Literacy Lunches, Winston meets students at their school’s lunch tables and talks with them about effective writing and reading strategies and her work as an author. Zpizza serves the students healthy, all-natural pizzas and a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Annie’s books and Zpizza are donated to each school’s library for the purchase of new books.

Librarians and teachers throughout O.C. are excited about Literacy Lunch. “What a great idea,” says Theresa Wright, librarian at Morse Elementary in Placentia. “Several elementary school librarians in our district are already looking forward to Literacy Lunch coming to their school.” Call 949.679.2865 for details.

Gift Card Tips

The National Retail Federation says that gift cards will be the “most requested gift” this year. Here’s how to give wisely.
> Check to see if the gift card has fees and expiration dates associated with it.
> Buy cards from reputable retailers and not from online auctions where you might find counterfeit versions
> Encourage the recipient to shop sooner than later. Some states consider unused cards to be abandoned propoerty.

Tiger Woods Learning Center's winning fundraiser
Tiger Woods’ fourth annual Block Party raised $700,000 for the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim. The all-day event started with a golf session at Pelican Hill Golf Club off Newport Coast and later brewed into an evening of 700 guests mingling and bidding in a silent-auction. The highest bid was $28,000 on a trip to Turtle Bay in Fiji for seven days. The party concluded with a grand finale of a dinner by celebrity chef Mario Batali and a performance by Seal.

Project Playhouse
A crowd of more than 400 cheered as a top bid was reached for each playhouse at HomeAid Orange County’s 17th Annual Project Playhouse Auction Party at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The live public auction of the whimsical cottages was the culmination of HomeAid’s signature fundraiser Project Playhouse. The event raised more than $365,000 to help HomeAid build housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives.
