National 'Family Day'

By OC Family staffPublished: September, 2009

Be sure to set the table for dinner on Sept. 28. It’s Family Day in O.C. The special day is designed to create momentum for a national movement that brings attention the importance of family dinners. Family Day’s slogan reminds parents that “Dinner makes a difference!”

The benefits of family dinners are many. Here are just two reasons to gather the family to the table:

> Teens who don’t dine with family are three-and-one-half times more likely to abuse drugs.
> Girls who eat five or more meals a week with family are one-third less likely to develop unhealthy eating habits.

CandyLand turns 60
CandyLand may well be the very first board game that many of us played as children. And, it’s likely you have the colorful box in your stash of family games today. Created in 1949 by Eleanor Abbott, who was recovering from polio in a San Diego hospital, the game was bought by Hasbro and sold for $1 when it was first launched. The iconic game made Forbes’ list of the most popular American Toys in 2005, leading the list of ’40s-era toys. A life-size version of CandyLand is displayed in the Give Kids the World Village, a nonprofit resort in Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses.
