And, it’s likely you have the colorful box in your stash of family games today. Created in 1949 by Eleanor Abbott, who was recovering from polio in a San Diego hospital, the game was bought by Hasbro and sold for $1 when it was first launched. The iconic game made Forbes’ list of the most popular American Toys in 2005, leading the list of ’40s-era toys. A life-size version of CandyLand is displayed in the Give Kids the World Village, a nonprofit resort in Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses.
