Keeps parents informed about kid illnesses

Dr. Marty Belson is a board-certified pediatrician who used his insight to design an award-winning website that keeps
parents up to date about infectious and poisonous illnesses and diseases in kids. iParenting Media named his website, Kid Emergencies (kidemergencies.com), one of the Greatest Products for 2007.

Kid Emergencies is a free database providing information about common child emergencies. His website includes a photo gallery showcasing up-close pictures of diseases, rashes and infections; a parent question-and-answer forum; and a comprehensive list of disease descriptions, treatments and preventions.

The photo gallery posts images of potentially harmful plants, animals and insects. Belson continually updates his photo gallery and hopes that parents will use his archive as a measuring tool to assess their child’s illness and, in return, respond quicker to situations.

At the question-and-answer forum, parents submit personal health questions about their child. Belson posts the most popular questions and provides succinct information on how the parent can treat and/or prevent the injury or illness.

The most popular aspect of Belson’s website is his list of top 10 common emergencies, which he selected based on his many years as an emergency-room  pediatrician. The bulk of the children Belson sees in the emergency room are those suffering from asthma attacks, bites/stings, bones/bruises/cuts, colic, fevers, poisoning, seizures, bellyaches and rashes. Infections are undoubtedly the most common emergencies; however, children who suffer from poison ingestion are a close second.

More than 50% of poison exposure happens to children under age 6. Poison exposure can occur even with the most cautious of parents.

The purpose of Kid Emergencies?

To share with parents what doctors have been treating for years. It might sound unusual to hear about a child who consumed an entire bottle of dish detergent, but the truth is, these kinds of mishaps happen frequently – more often than people would like to believe. Belson says it is because “Parents are not aware that certain things are toxic. Kids will get a hold of anything, even personal-care items.”

The best way to prevent future illness is to stay informed. Know what infections look like, learn their symptoms and, most importantly, know your child. Just because your 5-year-old looks like he is running on a normal amount of energy does not mean he is not sick. If you want to prevent one of the top 10 from occurring in your home, work with your child to identify and avoid contact with potentially harmful products.
