More than 15 years and more than $200 million after actor Paul Newman de-cided to raise money for educational and charitable causes, he’s come out with his own wine.
Newman’s Own Wines made its debut recently at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar at Fashion Island. His California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are now being sold in local markets.
“The table is now set,” says business partner and longtime wine broker Charles Bieler. “From the start, he was only interested in moving forward if he liked every aspect of this. Did he want to take it home and have it for dinner with his wife and friends?”
Newman’s Foundation, whose mission statement is “shameless exploitation in pursuit of the common good,” has raised its money on the back of his own salad dressings, pasta sauce, popcorn, lemonade, salsa and other goods.
His most famous charitable organization is the Hole in the Wall Camp in Connecticut – a residential summer camp for children with cancer and other illnesses. Some 8 of those camps now exist, and he has donated to hundreds of charities.
Newman appears to be a man with a good heart, as well as good taste.
