OC STUDENT TAKES FIRST PLACE AT MEET Lauren Pawlik, an eighth-grader at Santiago Middle School, won first place in a gymnastics state meet in San Diego with a score of 37.25. Pawlik, a member of Wildfire of Tustin gym, also won first place in the Fall Fling in Las Vegas. Her average score is usually more than 9.5 and she hopes to conquer the next level and continue on with her success in gymnastics. FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER OPENS The two-story, 18,000-square-foot Anaheim Family Justice Center has opened its doors. The center, the first of its kind in Orange County, provides free services to victims of domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse and sexual assault. Partners of the new facility include: Anaheim Police Department, Anaheim City Attorney, Chapman University Law School, County of Orange Social Services, CSP Victim Assistance Programs, Orange County District Attorney and Women's Transitional Living Center. Expected to help 200 Anaheim residents a month, the center is a much needed contribution to Anaheim, especially with 5,200 reports of suspected child abuse in 2005 in Anaheim alone by Child and Family Services. BASEBALL ACADEMY OPENS The Sandlot Academy of Orange County recently opened in Lake Forest. The academy offers a variety of baseball and softball instruction programs, including hitting and pitching leagues, classes, clinics, camps and parties, and team and league meeting rooms. LOCAL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN RELIEF MISSION Lutheran High School of Orange County recently sent a team of 33 volunteers to New Orleans on a hurricane relief mission. The team, consisting of 22 students and several faculty members, helped to repair hurricane-damaged homes. ORANGEWOOD CHILDREN'S HOME RECEIVES PLAYHOUSE A one-of-a-kind playhouse recently on display at HomeAid Orange County's signature fundraiser Project Playhouse has been donated to Orangewood Children's Home. The sports-themed playhouse, which resembles a giant baseball, was donated by the 2006 Project Playhouse Opportunity Prize winners Susan and Nick Franklin. YMCA RECEIVES GRANT FOR AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS The YMCA of Orange County recently received a $20,000 grant from the Citigroup Foundation.
