FAMILY NEWS NEWS, VOICES, TRENDS FAST FACT In response to a doctor shortage expected to affect most of the United States by 2020, the regents of the University of California authorized UC Riverside to begin with the next phase of planning for a School of Medicine. A final plan is due by the end of the year. Information: newsroom.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/display.cgi?id=1463 UPDATE Potential predator gets 1 year One of 13 men nabbed in a police Internet sting last year in Laguna Beach – the sting was reported within OC Family Magazine’s October Cover Story about Internet predators – was sentenced in late October to one year in jail. According to the Orange County district attorney’s office, Ryan Arnell Mount, 30, of North Hollywood, received the sentence, plus five years probation and sexual predator registration. He was attempting to meet a fictitious 12-year-old he had contacted on the Internet. The men range in age from 19-51. All were charged with attempted lewd acts on a child under the age of 14. Several stings have occurred in the past year in the region, including Riverside and Orange counties, with the help of a citizen group, Perverted-justice.com. It is comprised of trained adult citizen-contributors who enter chat rooms posing as underage kids. If solicited for sex by adults, the teams work with police to prosecute and convict those adults. The group works to stop the highly organized pedophilia movement. |
