Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvination

Reveal a new you

You don't always need surgery to transform your look. Here are four non-surgical methods that will give you a fresh makeover.

By Dr. Angela ChampionPublished: November, 2008

In last month’s issue, I spoke to you about surgical procedures which require little down time. I received several responses, including “I can’t take time off for surgery or I’m not ready for surgery. What else can I do for facial aging?” This month, I want to talk about the most common non-surgical facial rejuvenation options, which can make a big difference!

Botox
Botox is a therapeutic agent used to treat lines and wrinkles caused by muscle contraction during facial expressions. By temporarily paralyzing certain muscles of the face, relaxation of the overlying skin occurs, allowing reduced visibility of wrinkles. The most popular use of Botox is for treatment of frown lines between the eyebrows, transverse lines of the forehead and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. The treatment takes approximately 10 minutes and lasts for 3-4 months on average.

Fillers
Injectable fillers, such as JuvedermTM and RadiesseTM, help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by “plumping up” the soft tissues and/or leveling out the surface near the wrinkle. The goal of fillers is to restore volume and fullness lost during aging, correct wrinkles, lift facial contours and enhance lips. A multitude of natural and synthetic fillers are available on the market today, each uniquely achieving the same goal. Some fillers are better for more superficial lines and lips, where as others are better for deeper wrinkles and volume restoration. Generally, the results are quite effective and last from 6 months up to 2 years.

Skin Resurfacing
Skin resurfacing techniques, such as chemical peels, dermabrasion and lasers are effective in treating sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented or coarsely wrinkled facial skin. The results can be long-lasting and provide significant improvement with a single procedure. All techniques use a source (chemical, instrument or light) to provide a controlled injury to the skin, which removes the damaged outer layer of the skin and stimulates the production of new skin cells and/or collagen. This results in tighter, less wrinkled skin with a more youthful appearance.

Professional Skin Care Program
Following a skin care regimen under the guidance of a medical professional can greatly improve the appearance of your skin, allowing for a more youthful glow. Sun damage, fine lines and skin discoloration are all areas targeted by skin care products. Basic steps include cleanse, rejuvenate, resurface, hydrate and protect. As your new skin cells begin to surface you can see and feel smoother and healthier skin. Most importantly, don’t forget your sunscreen!
