It wasn’t so many years ago that an encyclopedia salesperson was a legitimate career choice. In the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, a kindly and well-dressed man or woman would show up at your doorstep and caution parents about how their children might fall woefully behind if not for their “investment” in their kids’ future.     Advances in technology have sent the encyclopedia salesperson the way of the wooly mammoth, and today’s students can access infinite, up-to-the-moment information about any subject in the world. With today’s school budget crisis, students must have access to a wide variety of alternative reference materials, as well as other resources such as calculators, music software and so forth. Fortunately, a large number of applications can streamline your studies and save money. Students can add to their vocabulary, read an assigned book, calculate a math problem and even learn how to play the piano – all on one device!     Every smartphone has its own brands, but for the sake of space, we stayed with Apple products, since it is the market leader.
