After
being chosen to participate through a widespread audition process,
resident members come to Southern California for a rigorous year of
training. Upon completion, they begin touring throughout the world,
conducting workshops in music, dance and performance to 100 to 600
students during three-day sessions.
The
workshops culminate into a two-hour concert in which the workshop
attendees perform alongside the Young Americans. The crux of the
workshop, however, is based on providing experiences and tools to
develop personal growth, confidence, self-esteem and mutual
understanding.
The Young Americans consists of 200 members
from over 37 states and seven countries. Among its more than 3,000
alumni are professionals in music education, fine arts, film,
television, radio, stage and recording.
“We have one show
a year where all 200 Young Americans on our roster come together to
perform,” says Strom. “It’s the ‘Magic of Christmas,’ which runs for
five shows Dec. 10 through Dec. 13 and the La Mirada Theater.”
The show sells out every year, and the elaborate production features 3,000 costumes and 30 scene changes.
“The story takes the audience on a ride to a magical place to experience Christmas in the northern mountains,” says Strom.
“We go ice-skating, build a snowman, cut down a Christmas tree, make snowballs and snuggle by the fire.
