What do you want to be?

Pretend City hosts When I Grow Up, a celebration of children’s career aspirations Tuesday.

By Susan BelknappPublished: May, 2010

Remember being asked what you wanted to be when you grew up? I remember the question, but ironically, I don't remember the answer I used to give. I don't really remember my aspirations in great detail until I decided I thought I might like to be a surgeon or an obstetrician in 10th grade (before chemistry, that is ...).

Pretend City in Irvine is an incredible children's museum that has not yet been open a year. It is a pint-sized city complete with bank, grocery store, working theater a doctor's office, you name it. Children can ride around in self-powered police cars and put on a stage production. It sounds like a blast. If I wasn't in the midst of press week, I'd go for sure.

You should check it out!

When I Grow Up is a celebration will help to inspire children to explore their dreams and career aspirations. In full uniform, real-life professionals including an Angels Baseball legend, a celebrity chef, firefighters, ballerinas, veterinarians and more will fill the museum with speak and interact with children through activities, storytelling and colorful costumes.

Children will assess their skills by learning how to do baseball drills, ballet moves, animal examinations, news reporting, cupcake decorating and more. Event guests include:

• Celebrity Chef and Wonderland Bakery founder Allyson Ames, who was name Best Young Chef in America at 17 and was also featured in the book, "Richest Kids in America and How These Kids Earned It," by Chicken Soup for the Soul author Mark Victor Hansen. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

• Angels Baseball legend Ike Hampton was a switch hitting catcher for the Angels from 1975-1979. He will teach children baseball drills and basics. 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

• Ballerina Christina Lyon is a member of the American Ballet Theatre and English National Ballet. She has starred in "Sleeping Beauty," "The Nutcracker," "Swan Lake" and more. 12:30 – 2 p.m.

• News reporter and television personality David Ihrig is the host of "On the Rocks TV," a lifestyle television show airing on The Outdoor Channel. (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

• Additional guests include veterinarian Dr. Matthew Wheaton and some animal friends, police officer Frank Caruso, firefighters, lifeguards, dentists and more.

Pretend City (pretendcity.org) is Orange County’s largest children’s museum and the first of its kind in the western United States. The museum represents an interconnected city with interactive exhibits such as a grocery store, farm, beach, café, art studio, amphitheater, construction site, marina, and emergency services. Pretend City is a nonprofit  educational organization.
