Fire up your passion

It doesn’t have to be a life-changing ambition, just feeling excited about little things is often enough to spark your bliss.

By Susan BelknappPublished: July, 2010

We’ve all read some form of inspirational, self-help literature or wisdom. There are millions of books, CDs and lecture series on DVD out there that are designed to cheer you up, light a fire under you, get back that spark of excitement or just refocus your conscious and subconscious thinking.

That’s cool. I love those books, snippets of wisdom, quote of the day. I love reading and listening to old Joseph Campbell interviews. I enjoy hearing compelling speakers like Maya Angelou or Wayne Dyer. I enjoy when people retweet Deepak Chopra and the Dalai Lama (note to self: follow both).

I was reminded again last Tuesday when I sat in a sales meeting with the Churm Media CEO and publisher of OC Family Steve Churm, who is a passionate, engaging speaker about the value of waking up every morning excited and ready for what the day brings.

Well, we all know that’s pretty difficult to maintain on a daily basis. We all know that when we have heard speeches, seen films or great books they truly do make an impact at the moment. We are on fire, but then a few weeks pass and we feel that fire cooling and often dissipating in an elusive wisp of smoke.

Excitement, like any level of emotion, is difficult to maintain for too long. Eventually, you get used to the thing that had you grinning ear to ear a few weeks ago – a new love, a goal achieved, the welcoming of a child into your life – and then the “awesome new thing” becomes part of your daily routine.

That’s fine. It is part of cycle. But I think we have a tendency to beat ourselves up a little when we don’t maintain this level of enthusiasm. I would like to implore people to not to do this. If we were at this heightened level all the time people might think we’re manic – and perhaps we would be.

But if we can just focus on little things and allow ourselves to be excited about that – and not question, or tell ourselves its lame, or try to play it cool.

Perhaps it’s your new CD or the gym you joined. Perhaps it’s your daughter starting ballet class, which she LOVES. It can be a “True Blood,” or “Inception” or some other new favorite work of fiction. It can be your vegetable garden that is producing a bounty of fresh, well, produce …

Give yourself permission to say, “Hey, I love that.” “I can’t wait!!!” Or, “That is really cool.”

If this summer you are going on a dream vacation, a big concert with a group of friends or are spending the evening taking in a movie-in-the-park with your family. Try to take a minute to take in and revel in the details.

I’ve always said anticipation is half the fun when planning a trip. Instead of wishing the days away until the big bon voyage, appreciate them.

If you are staying home this summer, try to mark it in little ways – enjoy the breeze, the sunset, the feel of the grass under your picnic blanket … the intermingling sound of kids’ laughter and crickets chirping. It really doesn’t have to be revolutionary – or life changing – but it is summer. Celebrate.
