Garden Grove’s Hyatt Regency Orange County

This newly renovated hotel is perfect for out-of-towners or an O.C. family staycation.

By Susan BelknappPublished: June, 2010

I had the very enjoyable experience of going to the newly renovated Hyatt Regency Orange County (HROC) a couple of weeks ago. Who knew that little gem was tucked right near Disneyland, but is in Garden Grove? If you have friends or relatives visiting who plan to see the parks – or if your family decides to indulge in a little staycation – this is a great option.

The property has just undergone a $25 million renovation and it really shows. If you are familiar with Hyatt Regency’s atrium concept, HYOC is one of the largest I’ve seen, at 17 stories. It also has two new restaurants, TusCA and OC Brewhouse, which just opened in April.

Both restaurants are located in the lobby and have their own unique culinary style. TusCA is Californian-Tuscan hybrid blending local ingredients, seasonal cooking and traditional recipes.

Chef Laura De Martin is a native of Northern Italy and she has been given free reign to create with all the panache her skills allow. Sweet and charming, Chef Laura seemed lovingly devoted to her creations and is very excited to be heading up this concept. Even if it’s not for a hotel stay, try to get to TusCA for an excellent dining experience.

The menu is small, but very reasonable, with pizzas, pastas, appetizers and entrees. We tried a variety of tasting items and all were delicately prepared; with the freshest herbs and ingredients.

The OC Brewhouse is located in the lobby as well and a great place to be the center of attention. It serves more traditional fare, with appetizers, burgers, salads and sandwiches. If you come in on Angels’ home game days, wearing Angels gear, you get $3 pints and half-priced appetizers.

The accommodations themselves were very unique, with many guestrooms being suites with a separate living area. One great option is the bunk-bed suites, which are essentially two bedrooms. The kids’ room has bunk beds and their own TV, while the parents’ have a separate room giving mom and dad a little quiet and privacy.

Free shuttles run to the Disney resorts every 30 minutes and kids eat free at the hotel, so many opt to pop back and forth to utilize a little rest and relaxation.

It’s a great way to enjoy the parks without the driving, parking and hassle. I have a friend coming to town and hopefully her schedule will allow her at least a day at HROC. It really is an impressive option.
