I’m thinking of enclosing a “Dear friends and family” letter with my Christmas cards this year, the kind you get that gives you the lowdown on what this family or that family has been up to all year. The holiday letters I receive all begin, predictably, with, “I can’t believe another year has gone by …” What follows will be the educational accomplishments, athletic feats and social development of the children, a summary of the family vacation to Fiji, or perhaps the cruise taken for a special occasion. And then will come the obligatory apology for not sending personal notes, because, “… you know, we’re just so busy.” I look forward to getting holiday mail as Christmas approaches, and I love catching up with people I rarely see anymore. It seems, though, as I read their letters, that everyone else is living it up while we, well, we’re just living. Sometimes I wish for a more candid look inside their lives. I dug up a rough draft of a holiday letter I wrote a few years back but never sent. It read: Hey! We’re good! Hope you are, too. The kids are fine. No 4.2 GPAs in our household, but we’re mighty proud of the 2.4 our son worked so hard to bring home.
