Dear Editor – I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no peace on earth. Please tell me the truth, can we give peace a chance? Dear Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the newscasts from Darfur and the blogs about terror. Yes, Virginia, there is peace on earth, or to be more exact as you put it, we can give peace a chance. But we’ll have to try awfully hard. And we’ll have to count on you and your little friends to be the peace bringers. We cannot seem to count on the adults to do a very good job, so, we turn to you. When we pat your soft hair and look into your innocent eyes, we see hope. That’s why we cry hardest when it is a child who is hurt the worst. No peace on earth! You might as well not believe in Santa Claus. Because if you don’t believe that we can hug each other the way you embrace your stuffed animal each night, then what do we have to be thankful for? What do we have to look forward to? What would we do if we couldn’t dream the good dream? So tonight you dream not only about mommy, but about peace. You dream that our schools will be safe, that our places of worship will be filled, that people elsewhere will turn hearts of stone into cups of love. You pray for our soldiers, and you pray for Iraq. And, pray hard for America. Pray for the little boy or girl at our border and for the little hungry child who lives near your home. Pray that the rich will give to the poor, and the mighty will lift up the weak. You see, Virginia, peace is about planning, and it is about hopes, dreams and everyone learning to get along. It really is about you. And, luckily, Virginia, if your dreams come true, and a million little friends like you have dreams come true, peace will not only have a chance, but it will be here when you wake in the morning.
