Green light

Go forth and green your nest.

By Kimberly A. PorrazzoPublished: February, 2009

On the heels of the “Green Issue” just published by our sister magazine OC METRO on local eco-friendly businesses, OC Family is bringing green home. This month’s issue is all about creating a healthier home and the quest to leave a healthier planet to our children.

As our staff compiled 21 ways to reduce your family’s carbon footprint, it struck me how the little changes really do make a big difference. I’ve heard the tip about turning off the water when you brush your teeth (my husband frequently flips the faucet off while I’m brushing to nudge me into compliance), but I never knew how much water I was really wasting. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that in a typical home, more than two gallons of water flow straight down the drain before one rinses. And did you know that you can switch some of your kids’ video game players into energy-saving mode? If your kids are into video games like mine, then you know what an impact that is sure to have.

I admit, a few years back I was predicting that the green push would sputter out and we’d soon be on to the next fad. I was wrong. Seems the movement has more momentum than ever. With all the products and services available to help you transition into a more eco-friendly family, there is no excuse not to start living green today.

I switch gears now with more news about OC Family. A trusted brand in the market for more than a decade, OC Family is all about providing information and resources to Orange County families. Our latest project is the OC Family Academy, a brand-new tutoring center based in Newport Beach that’s set to open this spring. If your child could use a little one-on-one attention in reading, math or writing, or they need a little brush-up on test taking, add your name to our waiting list, and we’ll send you more information.
