![]() The Beach Pit’s rustic Costa Mesa eatery (one of three in O.C.) dishes out a variety of staples – pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken, sausage and tri-tip, among other selections. The fare is wood-smoked in the Southern tradition. Sure, you’ll get completely “sauced,” but what’s wrong with a messy meal if the food is just this side of a religious experience? My friend chose a large salad (named “The Salad” by some creative genius): a huge bowlful of iceberg lettuce with corn, jicama, tomatoes and barbecue chicken topped with ranch or vinaigrette dressing. My six baby-back ribs, smoked to perfection, made me a loyal customer after the first bite. My side orders, barbecue beans and cole slaw, rounded out a wonderfully sloppy lunch. In addition to the barbecued items, The Beach Pit BBQ offers several other salads, a variety of meat sandwiches, a tortilla wrap stuffed with the same meat choices and chicken, or pulled-pork pizza. Hungry diners can kick-start their appetites with sweet-potato fries, blueberry cornbread, fried okra, nachos and more. You’ll find other locations in the Tustin Garage and in Angel Stadium. Sink your teeth into The Beach Pit BBQ, and you’ll be back for more. Just remember to leave the white tuxedo at home.
