Jon Alpert of Waterworks Aquatics notes four developmental stages for parents to consider when starting their child in swimming lessons:
> Ages 3-6 months: Your child has the ability to float more independently on her back, and her neck muscles can support her head.
> Ages 7-15 months: She has the ability to swim longer distances and is capable of regaining her upright posture at the wall.
> Ages 16-24 months: She can swim even longer distances under the water; however, her movements are still stiff.
> Ages 24-36 months: Your
child now responds well to both verbal and physical commands in the
water, and lifting her arms out of the water becomes somewhat easier.
