Down to her level

Interactive play is great for development.

By Breanna MoorePublished: December, 2009

For a child, playing is usually the most natural thing in the world. But for adults, playing may not come quite as naturally. During the course of growing up, most parents have forgotten how to get down on the ground to stack blocks and roll around.

However, many professionals indicate that play is the way children begin to learn.  So the more parents can get down on the ground with their little ones, the more growth and development they may see.

Rae Douglas, director of the Citron Campus at Fairmont Private Schools, says many problems can be solved through play.

“Play is a way that children can express their emotions,” Douglas says. “Both parent and child are learning at the same time.”

Douglas says that children learn through exploration, which can mean learning by doing, touching and interacting with each other.

When parents get involved, it is important for them to play with their child on the child’s level.

Terri Hutchison, a speech pathologist and director of Life Spirit Speech Pathology Inc. in San Juan Capistrano, says that through play, parents are able to pay more attention to the interests of their child and reciprocate those interests.
