Get organized!

By Kimberly A. Porrazzo, Lorie Marrero and Cathy BatesPublished: April, 2009

Oprah said it best: An organized closet will change your life. Now take it to the next level. De-clutter your home, free up your schedule, cleanse your mind. You’ll be on your way to a more peaceful, purposeful life. Like a new diet or exercise program, however, the first step is always the hardest. If you’re reading this while surrounded by life’s debilitating clutter, read on. We’ve enlisted advice from a variety of experts to guide you through the process. Your new mantra: Sort, purge, containerize and then maintain!

The benefits of an orderly life
You know the feeling: Panic and anxiety take over when you realize that you’ve failed to follow through on a commitment or aren’t going to meet a deadline. Do you often feel as if things are falling through the cracks and that perhaps you are forgetting something? How could you forget? The real question is, how could you not, when your life is in disarray and both your mind and your environment are filled with clutter?

The root of all clutter, really, is delayed decisions and actions. When you gaze upon your countertops, your dining table, your desk and your floor, do you see the objects there, or do you see the aura of all of the delayed actions and decisions they represent? Imagine the relief of having these energy drains disappear!

Catch yourself when you say, “I’ll put it here for now.” That is one of the danger signs of a delayed decision that manifests itself in messiness. Remember that procrastination can often stem from perfectionism. Things don’t have to be perfectly done; they just need to be DONE! “Good enough” is all most people have time for, so hang up your superhero cape and give yourself a break.

Here are four concepts to get you started:

Be decisive
Everything that is on your countertop or desk right now most likely represents decisions that have not been made. Clutter results from putting off these decisions. Your ability to get and stay organized is directly related to your ability to make decisions. Here are a few questions you can answer more decisively:

• Keep or toss?
• Donate or sell?
• What is the next action to take with this item?
• Where is the best place to store this item?
