Mothers of invention

By Kimberly A. PorrazzoPublished: November, 2009

If you've ever had an idea for a product and said to yourself, “I should start a business,” it’s time to act on that idea.

The women on the following pages did just that. Most started with an idea that evolved from either a passion or a problem. Jane Elia Schwartz, for example (next page), wanted to maintain her style after becoming a new mom. Jellibee Baby was born. Another mom, Catherine Del Valle, had a problem. She couldn’t remember when she had last fed her newborn. She solved that with Mothers Minder (page 84).

Most of the mompreneurs featured here had never run a company. Most funded their ventures with their personal savings. They all made mistakes along the way, but now they are successful business owners, some with products sold throughout the world.

Read how they did it, and how you can, too!
