MOMS AND CAREERS

Untitled Page

The best of both worlds

By Kimberly A. PorrazzoPublished: May, 2009

Career and family. The two, for years, have been conflicting pursuits – both demanding intensity that can drain energy and attention from the other. It’s been said that women can have it all – just not at the same time. These women, all moms, debunk the theory.

OC Family profiles 11 business owners who, between answering phones and taking orders, are also wiping noses and dishing out goldfish crackers. They are among the 10 million women the Center for Women’s Business Research says are now starting businesses at twice the rate of men. The biggest benefit, they say, is the flexibility to be home with their children.

Readers Feedback:

I was rather frustrated about this article. It really sounds like these aren't stay-at-home moms that are making it work. It's working moms that are making some time for their kids. When your self employed, that does give you a little more freedom to be there for your kids when they need you. This article didn't show the balance. It was moms with barely enough time for their family. There are SOOOO many other moms out there truely working AS stay-at-home moms. Most of them are waking up at 3am to work at Starbucks to be home for their kids during the day, restocking stores and night or direct selling with party plans. Those are the people you should be interviewing. I have been selling Princess House for over a year now and have all the time I want to work or spend time with my kids on MY schedule. My mother has truely been a Stay-at-Home mom and working mom for over 34 years with Princess House. She is the type of person you should contact to find out HOW it's done.
