It's an overnight camp, located about 45 minutes from Big Bear, where children with type 1 diabetes spend their summer in the mountains laughing, playing and making new friends. The first time I attended, I was 8 years old and scared to death. But after a week with a group of people who were just like me, I knew I had found a place where I could always come to for fun and relief. Camp Conrad-Chinnock offers both family camp and youth camp. Younger children can enjoy the camp activities with their parents, while older children spend a week camping by themselves. Camp Conrad makes it their mission to build self-esteem, spiritual awareness and moral character in each child that passes through their doors. I was a camper for 9 years before I became a staff member. There is a deep-seated bond within the campers and staff, many who have worked and camped together for years. We stand by each other in hard times and have been there to celebrate diabetic victories. In-camp activities include a crafts area with lanyards, dream catchers and painting. Children often spend their “free time” here, talking and creating with their peers. Another memorable activity is the campfire: Staff members lead themed songs that the children participate in, their voices echoing in the night. Campers can also take part in rappelling, swimming and a trip to the mines. The cost to attend Camp Conrad-Chinnock varies, depending on the session. For 2008, the estimates are: $195/person for families; $390 each for individual campers; and $110/person for Transition sessions. Camp costs also cover opportunities to learn more about type 1 diabetes. The medical staff provides great support through dietary, injection and pump classes, as well as the necessary diabetic supplies for camper sessions. Children can take part in discussion forums about their experiences with the disease, and learn from the staff members' examples, as well. After a week at camp, the children leave with new friends, new adventures and new hope for the future. Kristen Schott is a c | |||||||||||||||||||
