 Mother of two Residence: Huntington Beach Founder, Pretty Dreams prettydreamsshop.com Launched business: May 2007 Pretty Dreams designs and sells fresh floral “Diaper Cakes” and rag quilts that are a novel gift idea for baby-shower and new-baby gifts. Q: Where did you get the idea? I fell in love with rag quilting, and I started making rag-quilted quilts, burp cloths, soft receiving blankets and even pillows. Then I wanted to display a great way for these fun quilted burp cloths and receiving blankets instead of just laying them on a table at my trade shows. I recalled seeing a diaper cake online and thought it was a good idea. I figured if you take the top tier out and add fresh flowers, it would really make the consumer want to know what it was and it would attract more customers to my booth. Q: How long did it take from idea to marketplace? I was so excited about coming up with this idea, that as soon as I could, within about two months, I joined a bunch of trade shows, craft fairs and even the farmers market in Huntington Beach to sell my products. Q: Where did you get the startup funding? I took out a small loan from my 401(k) to help with the financing. Q: How are you marketing your product? I network with a group called Le Tip, and that has really helped my business. I also am a member of my local chamber of commerce. Of course, my regulars, whom I had met from doing trade shows and craft fairs, refer friends and are repeat customers. Also, on the back of my car is a display of our fresh floral diaper cakes.
