Jane Elia Schwartz

Mother of two
Residence: Rancho Santa Margarita

Founder, Jellibee Baby
jellibeebaby.com
Launched business: November 2008

JelliBee Baby is a sophisticated line of accessories and gifts that resonate with moms looking for beautiful, practical bibs, booties and other gems.

Elia Schwartz’s works of art – using materials as diverse as photographs, glass, pottery and unique fabrics and paint to create mosaics, tapestries and ornamental decorations with a whimsical edge – have been shown in galleries throughout the
Northeast. When her first child was born, she instinctively stitched lush, boutique-inspired bumpers, monogrammed pillows, blankets and wipes cases for her daughter’s room. Friends raved about her sophisticated designs and asked for pieces of their own. JelliBee Baby was born.

Q: Where did you get the idea?
I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating something ‘tailor made.’ As a new mom, I craved sophisticated, practical baby accessories that had a whimsical edge. My ‘mommy style’ is very much an extension of my style; this concept resonates with women who don’t want to lose their identity to motherhood.

Q: How are you marketing your product?
We’ve participated in high-profile events like Scott & Renee Baio’s Angel Foundation celebrity yard sale and the upcoming Sketchers ‘Mommy Edition’ event in L.A. We’re producing a catalog to share our items with boutiques around the country.

Q: What has been your smartest move?
Thinking through and determining a business model. Building flexibility into our business plan and staying flexible has allowed for growth and change.

Q: What has been your biggest mistake?
The second boutique I approached placed a large order. I was so excited, I didn’t get our agreement in writing, and I knew better. This deal turned into a huge headache, which eventually was resolved but could have been avoided had I stuck to my guns.

Q: What was your “Ah-ha!” moment – the moment you knew you had something special?
Every time customers are delighted by our pattern or design choices, the cohesive look and feel of the items and brand, I am encouraged and invigorated.
