Summer means barbecues, sunshine and long days at the beach. It’s a season when all that matters is having fun. But it’s also a time to discover good books, ones that interest children through creative illustrations and inspired tales. This month’s books will take you and your child into an imaginative world where the most elaborate dreams can come true. ‘Flying’ [ages 2-6]By Kevin Luthardt (Peachtree Publishers; $15.95; 32 pages) If you could fly, would you? In this book, you’ll follow one little boy as he asks his daddy just why he can’t spread his wings. The question-and-answer format of the book captures the inquisitive nature of children, and the comical illustrations will make you and your little one laugh along with the story. And, you’ll see that with a little bit of imagination – and a parent’s help – flying is possible! ‘The Boy Who was Raised by Librarians’ [ages 4-8]By Carla Morris; illustrated by Brad Sneed (Peachtree Publishers; $16.95; 32 pages) Libraries offer knowledge and insight, which is why Melvin spends his time at the Livingston Public Library. Whenever Melvin discovers something new – like creepy-crawlies – librarians Marge, Betty and Leeola lend a hand. When Melvin grows up, a new child comes along, ready to learn. Young readers will appreciate everything that libraries – and librarians – can provide. ‘When Giants Come to Play’ [ages 4-8]By Andrea Beaty; illustrated by Kevin Hawkes (Abrams Books for Young Readers; $16.95; 32 pages) What’s more fun in the summer than playing with giants? Follow Anna on her adventures with these oversized characters as they play hide and seek and an inventive kind of catch, and share secrets by the pond. Illustrator Kevin Hawkes captures the whimsical tale by juxtaposing little Anna with the charming – and very tall – giants. Readers big and small will love this dreamy tale, and they may even want a giant of their own. ‘Magic Tree House #38: Monday With a Mad Genius’ [ages 7-11]By Mary Pope Osborne; illustrated by Sal Murdocca (Random House Books for Young Readers trade paperback; $4.99; 144 pages) Jack and Annie travel through time in the “Magic Tree House” series. In this adventure, the two journey to Italy in the early 1500s to help Leonardo da Vinci. Join Jack and Annie as they watch him test a new painting method and even help him fly. Readers will learn some interesting facts about da Vinci’s work as they enjoy the tale. Kristen Schott is OC Family magazine’s children’s book editor. |
