![]() My Beach Book [AGES 1-5] By Ellen Kirk (Collins, $5.99, 16 pages) September being the hottest month of the year, you may want to pull out this board book before a necessary trip to the beach. The carefully chosen words and colorful photographs will get everyone in the mood for sun and surf. Just don’t forget the sunscreen. Little Blue Truck [AGES 3-6] By Alice Schertle; illustrated by Jill McElmurry (Harcourt Children’s Books Division, $16, 32 pages) Told in rhyming verse, a little blue truck makes its way down country roads and discovers country life. Since he is the friend of all who see him, it is not unusual that, for example, a toad catches a ride on the truck’s hood. We adults only see our vehicles as pieces of steel and rubber used for transportation. Well, what if they have a heart? Because even Blue may need help. Little Hoot [AGES 3-6] By Amy Krouse Rosenthal; illustrated by Jen Corace (Chronicle Books, $12.99, 28 pages) Children will find out very quickly that bedtime can be a chore for any living thing. That is why the back cover is so humorous. (We won’t give away the story, but Little Hoot says to himself, “When I grow up, I’m going to let my kids go to bed as early as they want.”) This is a well-done story, innocently illustrated. Hopefully, your little one is like Little Hoot: All he wants to do is take a snooze. Ten Rubber Duckies [AGES 4-5] By Dawn Bentley; illustrated by Heather Cahoon (Random House Children’s Books, $10.99, 20 pages) First, a warning: This book comes with small parts (rubber duckies), so please keep them away from children under the age of 4. However, this counting adventure is a clever idea. Each rubber ducky will keep your child’s interest, all the while benefiting from some very basic math instruction. And, in this story, the duckies are off to the races. |
