Books that put young families into the snuggle mode.

By Craig Reem Published: June, 2004

Parents who take the time to read to their children from their very youngest days will reap the benefit of kids who learn to enjoy words and stories, the foundation for becoming good readers themselves. And not to be discounted is the sheer joy of time spent snuggling together over a good book. This month we look at books that are especially good for very young readers and their parents to cherish together.

For baby to 2 years

“I Love to Cuddle”
Written by Carl Norac; illustrated by Claude K. Dubois Doubleday, board book, 8 pages, $5.99)
Lola the hamster feels lonely when her parents go out for a little while. There's no one to cuddle with. So she gathers up everything soft and cozy in the house to build herself a cuddle island. But when mom and dad return, she realizes nothing else can take the place of their loving embrace. Lola is an endearing little character, as drawn by Claude K. Dubois, and young children will recognize her need for hugs.

“The Big Shiny Sparkly Activity Book”
Illustrated by Susie Lacome Courage Books, oversize board book, 10 pages, $10.95
This busy, lively activity book takes children through everyday places like the park, town, playgroup and the zoo and introduces plenty of new words and concepts. At the zoo, the concept of opposites is explored through the illustrations of animals; the playgroup pages offer a chance to learn about numbers. The colors are bright and bold, and each place has a sparkly patch - perfect for capturing toddlers' attention.

For ages 2-5

“Mother Goose”
Illustrated by Dan Yaccarino Little Golden Books; hardcover, 24 pages, $2.99
Classic Mother Goose nursery rhymes get hip new treatment from Dan Yaccarino. The illustrator, whose animated TV series, "Oswald," airs on Nickelodeon, brings a distinctly edgy and modern take, setting the familiar rhymes in a modern-day city. Mother Goose flies over skyscrapers and Mary, the one who had a little lamb, hails a cab to school. Adults might especially like Tom the piper's son, decked out like a jiving beatnik.

“Brave Bunny”
Written and illustrated by Ruth Lercher Bornstein Gibbs Smith, 32 pages, hardcover, $9.95
This gently told tale of a little bunny that decides to venture out into the forest was first published in 1973. But its lovely illustrations and simple text make it well worth this reprinting. As the bunny explores the forest, he meets various animals along the way: a tadpole, an eagle and an owl. And he finally finds a place to call home.

“Before You Were Big”
Written by Jennifer Davis; illustrated by Lora Cornell Workman Publishing, hardcover, 36 pages, $11.95
Preschoolers love to reminisce about the good old days - when they were babies. This charming book tells in rhyming text about the day the baby was born, how his name was chosen, how he was given a bath in the kitchen sink instead of the tub. The funny, funky illustrations perfectly suit the text. This would be a perfect book for a youngster who's about to get a new baby sibling, as each page reveals interesting baby facts along with the story.
