When
the pregnancy test comes back positive, there’s a rush of joy, often
followed by months of morning sickness and exhaustion. In the second
trimester, a growing baby means a growing belly and increased strain on
an expectant mother’s body. Coping with 9 months of discomfort isn’t
easy, but you can make it more bearable. The National Women’s Health Center (4woman.gov) suggests these simple fixes for some of pregnancy’s most persistent complaints: Aches, pains and backaches An expanding uterus and growing baby puts pressure on the back, abdomen, groin and pelvic area. The best solution is to lie down and rest until the pain subsides. Also, apply heat for temporary relief. Constipation and hemorrhoids The majority of women suffer from constipation and/or hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Help alleviate both conditions by drinking plenty of fluids (8-10 glasses of water each day) and eating fiber-rich foods. Heartburn and indigestion These problems are caused by hormone changes and the pressure of a growing uterus. Avoid greasy and fried foods, eat small meals throughout the day, eat slowly and keep weight gain within recommended limits. Sore and swollen breasts To alleviate tenderness, wear soft, underwire-free bras. Wash with water only and use a moisturizing cream if you experience dryness. Sleeping problems Months of disturbed sleep due to frequent bathroom visits, an active baby and leg cramping can make you cranky. Try sleeping on your left side, eat dinner 3 hours before bedtime and do light exercise. |
