It’s gorgeous, dreamy and oh such a perfect, grand jaunt from OC. Just 45 minutes south of Orange County, the Grand Del Mar is a luxe reward for a weekend away, big anniversary or whatever escape calls your name. Click to take a :60 look from our recent weekend there.

More than just exquisitely swank in details with Moroccan tiles, gold-plated sconces, Italian marble at every turn, and details such as music playing underneath the pool’s sea of blue, the very worthy $400 million hotel is serene and very comfortable if what you really want to do is relax and unwind. It felt as though time stood still at many moments throughout the weekend.

The service is wonderfully “as you wish.” You’ll be greeted with eucalyptus refresher towels upon check in, Evian misted at the pool and driven Escalade-style to the Clubhouse, beach (just 5 miles away) and to your canyon hike, horseback riding or trip into town in nearby La Jolla. (Note: the hotel can also pick you up from the train station in San Onofre if you want to skip the I-5-drive down.)

It’s one of the most beautiful hotels in the world with a Tom Fazio course if you golf. And there is a lovely, lovely Spa with one-of-a-kind treatments. I experienced the Renaissance 90-minute touch therapy massage. Mineral rich mud (from the bottom of an Australian sea, I believe) was applied, I was then wrapped (think: womb), and lowered a foot into a free-floating bed of water (felt like drifting into a sleepy ocean). After I rinsed in the rainforest-like, rosemary-infused Swiss 10-sprayer wonderland, the aromatic-oil massage began. Such indulgently and toxin-free fabulousness.

The hotel is still new’ish to many, as it has only been opened a few short years. And now that peak season has ended, it’s a destination more affordable.

A grand getaway to certainly put on your reward list.

Holy Tower of Terror! :60 Disneyland Halloween peek

A little spook and creep to get you in the mood this year. Here's a look at the Disneyland Halloween fun when a few of us got a first look at the scene.

Now the lines for the top Halloween haunts (Tower, Space Mountain & Haunted Mansion)? Yes, I hear they are long. We had our resourceful Disney guide, Devin, for cuts, but I heard the lines ranged from 35 mins to two hours. I say it's worth it this time of year, and try checking out the Disneyland phone apps for wait time 411. By the way, Devin also gave me the word on "Chicken Doors," ever heard of them? Backdoor door dashing for those who suddenly have a change of faint-heart. Think I wish I had known about that for myself on Tower of Terror (first time on and I broke my nail clinging onto my 5-year old, as I genuinely screamed my bloody head off.)

Other scoop? Mickey's Halloween Party is NOT at California Adventure this year, it's going down at Disneyland for the first time in many years. You pay a separate ticket price for this, and can get all the information here.

And as for eats? Thunder Ranch is really a fave of mine (tofu BBQ skewers, yum!) and the kids adore the all-you-can-eat. Adults are $25, kids are $10 and you can leave cowboy-bellyaching if you let yourself.

Never heard of "trucks"? I'm with ya. So when I won this "deck," it was a whole new world. Take a look at the skate love I found in OC and learn about building a custom deck:

Now I’m kind of the peace and love type (started my kid in yoga at two). So I never really saw the “lift on the pop” lingo in my life. But I got ushered in right. I respected the art by SteevCreeper (heavy into surf and skate btw and roots in Black Flys), who donated his time and talent to the Surfrider foundation raffle. And I liked his Hindu connection with the Skate scene and global look at society. So my eyes opened.

And I loved what I saw from the guys at Laguna Surf & Sport. Community, connecting with kids, passion for a sport. Frankie, who built the board, and Jimmy, who runs the place, sealed the deal for me. They got to know my guy, were cool enough to explain a lot of things to me, and, most importantly, I felt like my kid was really in good hands. They care about the kids at LS&S, get to know ‘em all, even let kids build their own boards there with them (assemble and all as they age up), and they really want the kids to love their boards and express themselves as individuals (custom board package just $119).

So will I forgo the downward dog for kickflips and ramps? Surprisingly yes. Now. As long as he “rocks the pads.” All 6. And keeps that helmet tight.

Dinonight! My Walking with Dinosaurs :60 video look

They call it an “Arena Spectacular.” Good dino coining there. It really is.

Lifesize, roaring, snarling, angry T-Rex beasts and more; 17 in all. The show took a year to create, $20 million to come to life, operates via voodoo rigs and has been seen by 4 million around the world. But you forget all that once you hear the first roar and get lost in the oversized lost land.

So you wanna go? Get moving! Show leaves OC Sunday, then onto LA at Staples next week for only a handful of shows.

More scoop on the BBC-born backstory here, but again, just go. There’s nothing like being there. It’s a show to remember, one unlike any I’ve ever seen before. The fun, relatable historic narration might be soaked up by little ones, but it’s the visual memories that will last.

And no, it’s not too scary. Just the right amount of roar to have ‘em clinging with an enlivened spirit.

:60 VIDEO: Seriously, no carbs? Meet Season’s 52.

Check it: no heavy carbs, no butter, no bread, no fryers. And even organic wines for no-sulfate fans. Healthy, hip cuisine at this new West Coast stop in OC. Here’s a look.

So can all this healthy curb your cravings and satisfy? We left delighted. On this preview night at this new haunt that took over The Clubhouse, our crew tasted all from fig flatbread and table-tossed greens to parmesan artichoke, a variety of main dishes and rows of sweet deserts—all paired with a range of vino.

The atmosphere was buzzing and swank. The staff; gregarious and thoughtful.

The offerings were rich for this Vegetarian (no chicken stock is even used in any recipes), and Season’s 52 happily accommodates no-Gluten foodies and probably any other preference you have.

I must say it was so nice to not worry about all the hidden calories. And everything is seasonally picked. "When you get vegetables and produce at the height of its season, you don’t need to fluff it up with extra calories and butter sauce,” said head Chef Timothy.

Also, there’s a piano bar inside the bar for live, relaxed soak-up-the-scene entertainment.

:60 live look at Newport Dunes. Climb the whale!

Kids dig the place, water trampolines to 4-person bikes to family paddle boats. It's a different vibe down at The Dunes than at an OC beach. I can't really explain it, it's more free and all kid at heart. Here's a quick, live look when the Newport Dunes invited OC Family for the day.

Now about climbing that iconic whale ... Seriously I did it, and I think there may be some floating photographic evidence. Yes, the water was freezing, yes, I almost pulled my arm out of the socket getting up, and yes, my kids about fell over when they saw me on top, but it's one of those things you have to do. (And it's WAY harder than it sounds.)

The whole place took me back a bit to the carefree beach days of what I imagine the '50s or '60s to be. A little retro with big water toys and anything-goes. And missing was the absence of our sometimes "plastic-fantastic," perhaps over-toxed OC.

Maybe it's because you're nestled in in the Back Bay away from it all, or maybe because there are a lot of vacationers who just want to chill and have fun. You just don't see a lot of places in OC so relaxed and centered around good old-fashioned fun.

We really enjoyed hangin' out all day till sundown with friends and doing ridiculous things like climbing an oversized whale till you about killed yourself. (Here's a :60 look at the night scene too from last month.)

In it's own way, The Dunes is a little fountain of youth with an OC invite to be a kid and a place for the kids to seriously just play from toy to toy.

... And now that tourist season is winding down, you'll have more toys, less crowds and more access to all the gear and water fun choices (bring life jackets if you got 'em for toys and boats; sometimes limited availability).

:60 VIDEO: All green chichi shopping at Fashion Island

How did I not sniff out this all-eco beauty loveshack Day 1? It's all green, all-natural and all of only 3 in the US? Melvita has it all for women (and green guys). Head to toe, all the organic goods you could want.

I like the greenery's offerings as I feel the boutique is legit. You see, I wonder about some of the organic products I'm offered out there and those I eye-spy while out and about. Are they FDA for real? Are they made in someone's bathtub? I jest on that last part, but really, who knows.

So I know if FI backs them and they have the cash to rent the space they must be worthy. Worthy of the $14 I dropped on deodorant? Dunno yet. I'll keep you posted, or you can stand real close next time you see me and judge for yourself.

It’s a local escape in a land that’s just a hop, skip and jump from Fashion Island: OCMA. Been there lately? Here’s a quick video look at the summer happenings: new exhibits and free fun for kids.

The new 15 Minutes of Fame exhibit has some amazing shots of a young Ali, sexy Marilyn and obscure shots of the famous and infamous. And what I love about the kids’ scene is they get kids to get hands-on artsy in the same manner of what’s going down in the gallery—on a kids’ level of course.

Just Dance. :60 live look at Southland Ballet Academy

Got a tiny dancer? Here's a quick look at the best in OC dance: the Southland Ballet Academy and their new Irvine Studio (with free introductory classes).

My girl hit the academy this week to try their ballet camp, and she had a most charmed week that has got me seriously thinking about taking a shot at a future dancer. I'm all for the arts, as you may know, but the thing is I'm not a believer in raising a jack-of-all-trade, but master-at-none, overscheduled child. So I've put off trying my kids in multiple sports and interests, waiting for signs of the real deal. This academy has got me considering fueling my girl's new heart's desire.

I appreciate that the Academy is at the top of their game, that they have the most proven track record of students who go on to perform professionally, and I like the very accomplished dancers who are running the academy (some of the students now teaching have been there since 4 years old; which speaks volumes for the passion and organization.)

The group has a rich history in OC since 1983, but it's new Irvine location (their second to their Fountain Valley studio) is very attractive for various reasons: it's very modern, very accessible and is in a great area with various distractions for waiting parents.

By the way, the summer camp (check it out next year) was adorable with dance, crafts, cupcake fun and some Sleeping Beauty movie time, plus the kids put on their own "professional" concert at the end of the week.

Here's to my tiny dancer, and perhaps yours, perhaps finding a real life love.

This time I was allowed to shoot and share the performance. You must see what you missed so you can go next year. And learn below what else is up at the Summer Festival series with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Let's get right to it:

Pretty spectacular, no? I seriously don't overly gush on stuff often, but this night was amazing. The kids were wide-eyed and we all were highly entertained. If you don't think kids and the symphony go together, maybe rethink that as the Summer Festival is really great way to expose the kids to the arts under the guise of really engaging entertainment. Ahead still this summer is the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with live thundering cannons shot off and fireworks, plus two other concerts in the series.

Oh, and here's one other :60 look I shot and uploaded live during the Cirque Symphony show, which by the way is actually an old-school pairing; the circus and orchestra were often paired together before performances moved into concert halls.

Video: Smokin', Drinkin' & The OC Fair. :60 Live Look.

Seriously, I haven't seen that many cigarettes, tats and black tees since, well last year at the Fair. Anything goes there. All types, all walks of life. It's eat at your own risk and ride at your own risk, right? Case in point:

Now I don't know these clowns' back story but I know they hang there every day at the Fair, and they don't even work there. They were characters and I kinda liked there all-out spirit.

The theme is The Beat Goes for 2010 fairgoers, and it's all the carnival crazy and fried everything you remember with some new concert names and a new Hanger attraction.

Things I forgot you may want to plan for:

-Your kids ADD disorder that switches on like a light when they walk through the entrance. So many rides, games and food vendors, all vying for their attention. Meltdowns are quick unless you have a fat wallet. Wish I'd said: 5 rides, 3 games, 3 foods, and we're good. That kind a thing might have helped.

-It's hot, baby! Go later in the day; the night scene is fun and has that old-school feel.

-Hit the free kids' area asap to play games when your game $ runs out.

-Bring your sense of adventure, and let the chips fall where they may. I tried a Mexican funnel cake (churro sugar fried conglomeration) this time vs the regular. Verdict: not as good but fun to branch out.

Yea, I can stick it to the Fair, like we all can, it's so easy; but truth is, there's a cool sense of old-time community that breeds through that place. And I think at heart, it's a bunch of people from all walks of life just being kids again out to have fun and hang with others. And you can't knock that.

VIDEO :60 OC Live Look at The Huntington gardens.

This quick lookaround is a little north of OC. And you must go, if you haven't been.

After years of hoping to get there, we finally did. The Huntington is everything I thought and much more. Much bigger. Many more garden themes. Remarkably meticulously manicured.

It’s so tranquil and the kids have a blast running about free in the massive fields of green. We went up and down and smelled the rows of roses in the Rose Garden, and it was indeed sweet.

It’s steamy up in the Pasadena area now, but it's still all good. You can also plan to hit the tea ceremony room (A/C!) with finger sandwiches, tea of course, fresh fruit, etc (call for a reservation though). And after your day, skip the traffic back to the OC and dine at Old Town Pasadena for a change of pace.

By the way, note the hours at The Huntington: 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and it’s closed Tuesdays. Another good-to-know: there is a Free Admission Day. The Huntington is free to all visitors on the first Thursday of every month with advance tickets.

Bring your blankets, smore kits, coolers and chairs. And hit the Back Bay Bistro before if you wanna add some swank to the scene.

VIDEO: Pacific Symphony Summer Festival is on.

I think we are so lucky to have this outdoor concert venue (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre) paired with the Symphony right in the middle of OC. I love the different classical theme nights from cannonball grandness to Cirque whimsy, the al fresco picnining with your family and the exposure of real arts with the kids.

I'd give you a listen but there’s no filming of the performances, so here’s a quick overview of the scene when we hit the first of the 5 festivals in the series opening night. Here’s a look:

My kids really enjoy the symphony series, we’ve gone for the past 3-4 years. It’s the grandness, the big production and the picnic’ing! Anything with food ups the fun factor, right? Well this year we paired the concert with a picnic catered by Bristol Farms catering, who were kind enough to let us sample their offerings:

I must say the picnic preorder was effortless. I was always intimidated: when to order, what to order, how to order, but let me tell you, it’s very easy. Eric & Pia at Bristol Farms rock: 949-760-6514. I particularly loved our cheese appetizer and the wine went down very smooth. And the kids couldn't wait to dig into the brownies (of course). Pairing with Bristol Farms completes the refined symphony nature, and it's quite a treat as opposed to personal pre-prep and the haul up the hill. You simply arrive at the PSO gate and your cuisine is ready and waiting to enjoy.

Not sure your kids will be down for the symphony? Give it a go. It's now become tradition with us.

Video: Family vacay not so far away, La Quinta Resort

Hot Topic with summer on and kids out is: staycay or really get away? I personally don’t know anyone planning lavish trips to Hawaii, Florida, or (cough$, cough!) Europe. Those I know are all staying close. That said, here is a great, close getaway that feels big resort without a big luxe budget.

La Quinta Resort is a hacienda hideaway 20 miles SE of Palm Springs and 2 hr. drive from OC. It’s lush (yes I said lush in the desert), as luxe as you want it to be, on 43 acres, has 800 rooms, 41 pools, golf, tennis and optional excursions like horseback riding, hot air ballooning etc. Here’s my :50 pool scene look before I go further to get you in the resort vibe (note all vids shot & edited on new iPhone 4 with new iMovie app, pretty cool):

And an overall quick downlow on the Resort:

Peak season is Feb./March, so now’s the time to snag key room rates ($150/night’ish). And if you are up for saving$, come cooler in tow, pack drinks and food and go picnic style to the pool, or head back to the room to dine anytime. With 41 pools, you always have at least 4 pools steps from your door.

Or you can splurge a little, enjoy The Spa (most intense facial ever, see video), dine at Adobe Grill (authentic Mexican dining, see video), grab cocktails at the main pool and go shopping (I hit Tommy Bahama for my new suit, see Whrrl below).

My gushes on the resort: it’s amazingly kid- & pet-friendly, the 41 pools were such a luxury (hop to the next if some kid’s crying, the hottie in the thong comes and sits down by your hubby, you’re suddenly amongst a family reunion, you get the idea), how it’s a massive resort yet really has an intimate feel—and I adored the night scene with warm breeze, margaritas and hacienda Plaza charm, video evidence:

My caveats and good-to-know's: hello, it’s 105. If you can’t take the heat, stay outta the desert. If you stay in the water, it’s bliss (every pool is perfect temp). Bring your water toys, rafts, etc.; kids are welcome to use all. Also, it’s not just a family getaway, could be a Moms Weekend Away, Guy’s Golf Bromance Vacay or a Couples Retreat.

Too much sunscreen causes cancer? I'm powdering.

Have you read this month's newsflash reports that say too much sunscreen may cause cancer and how kids' skin is extra porous and can absorb the stuff way more than adults? Seriously, now we're all guilted for slathering our kids when we thought we were doing extra good. And we loved that spray lotion, now hear it gets into our kids' lungs (and everyone else's nearby).

I sweat this stuff ... which brand is best, eco vs non, spray vs cream, 30 vs 50, and the overwhelming shelf of possibilities. So with summer here I HAD to share my find. And know that I'm not pimping this powdery mineral magic potion for any other reason that I love it, and want others to know its wonder. Really. If you sweat sunscreen these days, get to know this natural sunmazingness from ColoreScience.

I discovered the ColorScience powder bliss while getting a facial at The Montage, and put it on my Mother’s Day wish list. So I’ve used it often since and it’s better than I imagined.

The gush is genuine, and I have my husband's $63’ish receipt to prove it. I know $63 for sunscreen? Say what! It’s worth it. I hate chemical anything. I hate sunscreen burning my eyes (struggle every pool season), I don’t like the greasy number it does on my pores and I’m all for no sun aging damage on my face. That said, I just had to try this waterproof (how’s that possible, I know, and btw athletes prefer it) powder fabulousness.

What surprised me most was that I was using it on the rest of my family too (sharing my “Mom’s only, don’t touch!” luxe treat, so unlike me).

Everywhere we go, I have it in my purse—with no worry that it will spill and goo my our purse paraphernalia. And I swipe the kids and hubby whenever sun hits. They close their eyes, I powder ‘em up in seconds and we’re done. (Just brush on skin, and powder puffs from the brush). No “You got it in my eyes. It burns. Ooh I don’t want any.” None of the above. And no goo on my hands. Even the hubby doesn’t get burned now. (And the tube last forever, and is so small goes everywhere with me ... even in my bra or swim top when I'm purseless).

It’s changed my daily battle and life really. I stress less, am pampering my skin naturally and am not fighting with my kids!

Give it a go. I got mine for faces and chest, but also have brushed it on bodies at the beach. The line also comes with a roller ball (maybe better for bodies), and it’s available in shades (makeup shades like a foundation); if you’re going for all-family coverage, I suggest Perfectly Clear.

Just wanted to share the love. Anything to breathe easier. Happy summer, my sun-kissed (not fried) friends.

Video: California Adventure's World of Color & Glowfest

Totally hot for summer is Disney's new World of Color and Glowfest. I hit both Opening Night with my family for a first media look. Here they are back to back with a goofy bit when my kids punked me with Pluto. Hit it (click 720p for hi-def).

So what did I think of the WOC show (25 minutes btw)? I thought my kids loved it. My girl adored Ariel, my guy loved Buzz, and my hubby was diggin' the fire and pirates (the Johnny Depp bit did have serious cool factor).

I personally didn't grow up going to Disney as I'm a transplant, so I don't have the die-hard connection, so it's all about creating my kids' memories. And while much will be said in great lengths about the show, my 6-year old girl described it as "Great! And very pretty." And my 5-year-old guy simply said, "Wow." I think Walt would have liked that just fine.

Kids are out: Wild Rivers time

Hot Topic: what to do with the kids out of school? Wild RIvers: just opened for the season. I was outfitted for the wild, zebra and all, as we hit Wild Rivers—my son’s family birthday pick.

Now I’m not really the scream-your-head-off, rider Mom-type. Sure I was as a kid, but that usually changes. I’m more the chillax by the pool and sunbathe with a cocktail. But when the kids bat those pretty-please eyelashes, it’s amazing what I’ll do.

So I actually rode lots. My kids rode everything numerous times with the hubby. My faves: the big family slide that goes seriously fast, the boat ride (longest wait, so go early in day to skip lines maybe) and I had fun on double-rider tubes with the kids.

The “toilet-plunger” (we call it), was thumbs down and two Tylenol from this mama. You zoom down tubes hands behind head, it whips you around, circles you into a toilet-like bowl, then plunges you in a pool. My 5-year old rode it two more times (whacked), while my girl and I went to the warming pools (ahh).

Lots to do for all ages, and cool for all ages. There’s the family vibe, teen scene, and baby pool (always warm). One place with lots of range.

Anyway, it was a fun time, even for this way chillax Mom. And the kids loved seeing me slip, slidin’ and screamin’ my head off.

The Lion King opening night at OCPAC

It's one of the hottest shows in OC right now, and with good reason. My family and I attended Opening Night of Disney’s The Lion King Tony® Award-winning Broadway performance. We really had a great time, click to take a live look and get firsthand input.

Honestly, I didn't know what to expect from The Lion King, as I'd always just heard the kind of annoying commercial so many times with that song blasted out of nowhere (you know the one), which often prompted me to switch stations.

So I went with an open mind, and was amazed. There was so much depth to the play and just top-notch all the way. True heart and soul was put into every act, stitch, prop, note, and lit look from start to finish. And it was very funny in parts, as well as suspenseful and dramatic for the kids.

The curtain’s up at the Orange County Performing Arts Center for a limited 3-week engagement through June 13. I really was blown away by the animals brought to life, the acting, the sets, costumes, music and all.

Now in its second sold-out decade in New York, the global phenomenon is the winner of more than 70 major awards worldwide and has been seen by over 50 million people in 13 different countries. So glad I exposed my kids to the legend.

47 years old (gasp). Scientologist (whispers). Hollywood privileged (j for jealously). Whatever anyone wants to say, I couldn't be more thrilled for this expecting family.

I have wondered how this family could live in the public eye ever since the death of their son, and just think this is the most fabulous news for them. I wish nothing but amazingness for her health. And should the child happen to be challenged with some chromosone issue, I sense the family will be miraculous, loving parents under any circumstance.

I saw this story just featured as a news story on CNN, with title ,"How old is too old?" Who are any of us to judge who have never lost a child?

Purest blessings to Kelly, John and Ella. May they have a piercing blue-eyed baby who heals their broken hearts.

Swimsuit season. And Kleenex at my Weight Watchers.

I lost it at my Weight Watchers meeting today. And I’m not talking lb's. I’m talking Kleenex, stat! Slight mental breakdown in progress.

With swimsuit season near, and a jeans party last night, it was all too much reality for this queen of spin and sometimes denial.

You see my friend hosted a fabulous Miraclebody jeans gathering last night. I went and the jeans indeed sucked 10 lbs off me, but I was still miserably uncomfortable on the way home in the size I “thought” I was. The party was just the kick in the stitched denim ass I needed. I looked up my Weight Watchers meeting location time, and returned today—after a 15-month, uh, “sabbatical” (to focus on other things, since I so had the weight thing handled since dropping major pounds since my last kid).

So there I was at the same WW location, with my same WW card, in the same vanilla decorated space. I was so back—but almost 20 lbs heavier. I made it through the meeting fine, but then the leader approached me after to review tools. Cue the waterworks.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, I lost it. It was that Mack truck moment that hits you sometimes. The reality of how I failed my goal and was now doing something all over again that I said I never would was just too much. And apparently, it was all bigger than the double-digit pounds I had to lose.

The very kind, business-like WW lady turned instant, involuntary Life Coach looked at me and asked one question: “How many kids do you have?” (noting the one I had with me). I said, "Two." Which she followed with, “Where’s the time for you?” Yep. 2 kids. 1 husband. 1 essentially full-time freelance job. 2 sites. 2 blogs. 1 dog. 1 new bunny. 1 house. And 1 spent Mama. (You know, the normal Mom math, plus or minus 1 or 2.)

My Mack truck was my WW meeting, but everybody has their own point at which it’s clearly evident that they’re in neutral, reverse or on empty.

“Forgive yourself. You realized it. You’re doing something. And we can do this.” she told me.

So here’s to a Skinny Bitch healthy eating, balanced mama, who looks great in the latest mix-match suit, and with or without her miracle jeans.

Why I crossed the Capo Unified strike lines

I’ll start by saying I never thought I would. But I have. I’ve taken my kids to school the last three days of the strike because I hate this whole thing, and don’t want to be a part of more mess.

I hate the power and politics around this whole thing, and the bullied nature I feel to keep my kids out of school. I don’t love unions. And I can’t come to terms with the union wanting an agreed date in the contract restorative language to end the temporary 10% pay cut. It’s a recession! I’ve said several times that I was laid off two years ago. And by the way it was permanent. No cut in salary. No promise of a job back. No nothing. Just a bye-bye after 8 years, and a “we need you to leave today.” And I didn’t even have hard feelings (hello, everyone around me was getting slashed, the company was bleeding and it was what it was).

So, as a working mom, I had to worry about my kids having a house to still live in to even go to their assigned school district and make sure food was on the table. And both the house and food were quite frankly priority over the school.

I’m not going to pretend to understand both sides here and every detail. I can only say: I don’t like what I see. And I’ve heard talk of how the schools are in chaos now, how kids aren’t learning, how parents aren’t welcome to volunteer, how everyone’s absent. And a lot of that is hype, in my case. I was welcome to volunteer, and did, there were only a combined 25 kids in the class, and I saw normal tests happening, and I met the sub, who was a friend of a friend. Now my kids are young, so they aren’t doing algebra or anything, but from what I saw things are under control and my kids are still learning, engaged and in a routine.

I think teachers rock and I support education of course, but these are tough times. And many jobs are important all around the US, jobs of scientists, healthcare, engineers, and I could go on. And in all fields, people are getting laid off, taking pay cuts, and with no promises of returned normality. And those fields all important and indirectly effect our kids and the world they live in.

I’m sure both sides, the board and the union, are whacked in their own way. But I don’t like the chaos and drink the kool-aid mentality to get my sign and go rally. And for the life of me I don’t understand how the union can want a date assigned to when the cuts will expire? Hey, no one promised me my job back (which I did not get back), needless to say, a date I might return full pay.

Overall, I guess I just don’t like the ugliness of it all, and to see the kids picketing also? I’m not really down with that either, as I doubt the kids truly understand the complexities of it all, as I don’t seem to know one educated adult who completely gets it.

Finally, I think some moms may not be sending their kids just to go with the flow, and not “look bad.” A kind of peer pressure at our age. If my kids were in highschool, and were given a choice to "watch The Office or do a worksheet" (as I've heard), I may feel differently. But my kids are engaged, so why not send them? I’m not a teacher, I’m not part of the union, I’m not on the board, and I’m not going to pretend to be any of the above. I’m a mom. With jam-packed days and working deadlines (who freelances from home, so I could easily keep them home). My job is my kids, my copy deadlines, and not to get in the middle of all this mess with teachers who have a union behind them, and a board who has a public who votes on issues.

And again, overall, I guess I just don’t like unions.

(Quick overview of the issue: This is a big deal, setting trends nationally and the first strike in OC in a decade. With a $34 million dollar school district deficit, at least 90 percent of the district's instructors at 56 schools went on strike to protest permanent vs temporary contract language of an exact date as to when their 10% cut would expire. It's happened. How very sad, somewhat surreal and also maddening. After months of debate, my Capo USD school is on strike beginning April 22nd. I have a pit in my stomach. I have great angst and anxiety. And I have collective parental concerns no one can exactly answer. How long will it last? Do we send our kids to school? Will they be safe? Will there be turmoil? Will it get hostile?

I’m not going to get into all the issues here. And I’m not really asking for answers, as there is always another side. I’ve learned that. I posted about my confusion and the debate at my column for the OrangeCountyMomsBlog.com (read it if you want to get caught up), and I got many comments and much appreciated discussion, but no clear answers, only opposing views.

So this post is not to ask for answers, but to express our real, shared distress, worry and anxiety with all of us who are going through it (and perhaps to enlighten those who can’t relate, as it hasn’t happened at their school—yet).

It’s a very bad situation. Very uncomfortable. Emails fly left and right. Moms gather in small circles. Some parents talk of homeschooling now. Some talk of shared play dates and events, as they won't be sending their kids to school. Many worry about work and finances and taking time off. And some seem almost stoically detached.

For me, I guess it will be a day-to-day matter. I’ll probably go, assess the scene, possibly meet the sub and decide to stay or go. I really don’t know, and I don’t know anyone who’s been through this. The video below tells a real concern I have of 100 kids in a multipurpose classroom with a clueless sub. It’s the only funny thing about this whole situation. So a little humor here to lighten the mood.

But I’m worried for my kids. I immensely hate to see moms taking sides against other moms. And I can’t help but question the memories this really hostile, ugly struggle of power and politics may leave on our kids—the ones it’s “really” about.

Who knows? Maybe it will end in days, instead of weeks or more. But, whatever the length, I’m quite frankly disgusted that this couldn’t be solved over the course of this past year. And perhaps this situation will serve as an example of what doesn't work.

All kids & no play makes Jane a dull girl

Every day Moms are near losing their minds from too much of the same ole, same ole. Too often we’re stuck inside on kid patrol or stuck behind a desk in company isolation. So here’s just a little reminder to get out there when we can.

I recently signed on for a few jaunts outside my comfort zone, and had a great time. It’s so easy to say, “No,” but know that you’re also saying no to new experiences, new people, new ways to blow off some steam.

OC has lots going on and some great quality people.

Video gaming and kids are always hot topics with moms. So I hit DreamWorks for a sneak peek of their new Kung Fu Panda World. The skinny, a video blog and talk of if gaming's good below.

For the first time ever, DreamWorks invited a few bloggers to the campus to get the Kung Fu lowdown and also tour the great DreamWorks land. Here's a quick video from my day with a look "behind the gates." The company headquarters rock. A river runs through the place, waterfalls gush like Niagara (also paired with some koi tranquility of course), and nature surrounds. Creativity flows literally and before the eyes in all directions.

Kung Fu Panda World is the first in online gaming for the animation imagination wizards. It launches March 26^th and appears to have serious graphic game, parent-safety and a killer fun-factor for kids 7-13. The World competes with Webkinz and the like, as well as older pop rivals. And I suspect, it will overtake, as DreamWorks has gone all out for near two years amping graphics that go way beyond stairstep movements and keeping the thrill alive for kids (aka, no burnout factor). And the World also acts like a pre-Facebook space for the older tweens with its social peer play.

Now my kids are 4 and 6, so I really haven’t delved into the gaming arena yet. That said, I chatted with head creator and DreamWorks man for 14 years, Rick Rekedal. I drilled him a bit on our Gen Computer Kids and the role of video. While talking game and swapping some toy stories (I wrote/shot many Mattel commercials a few yrs back), Rick 'fessed of his own family: “Oh us? We’re a total book family.” (Serious book family, like Dakota vacations to Little House on the Prairie land, really.) So I’m thinking, say what?! You’re the gaming guy. What gives?

Well, as suspected, this best-of-the-best tech animator gamer still values old-school imagination. For his 3 girls, computer time is very limited and used as a reward. I got the sense of moderation meets safe fantasy play. I dig that, and I share this if you’re a mom like me resisting the video world reality. Let's face it: Resistance is Futile, right. As he said, think: of gaming as a reward system, set time limits, but let the kids have the fantasy fun. So after my day at DreamWorks, I just may embrace what’s next and that which my wanna-be Apple kids have been begging mom for: some computer time!

Oh, the Kung Fu Panda World gaming is a subscription service ($5.95/month) and kids can create their own Kung Fu identities, challenge other kids in Kung Fu showdowns and ultimately become the Dragon Warrior. (And you get games for big people too.)

San Diego Prius BS 911 call

If, in fact, it comes out that the San Diego guy is a Prius 911 liar, I think he and the Heaney parents need to be sent off in an extra large Jiffy Pop ballon and flown away to oh, I don’t know … Iraq. There maybe they could go fight for our freedom of speech and see why it shouldn’t be messed with and how you shouldn’t go shooting your mouth off for nonsense to get attention.

That said, I don’t know about you, but I’m not buying the latest 911 Prius call that happened in San Diego last week. I mean, why didn't the guy just didn’t throw the car in neutral when the 911 operator asked him to do so, as he was flying down the freeway nonstop? How come nobody has heard of this problem? Why can't anybody prove it? And why are experts talking hoax? And oh yea, the guy owed like $700,000 in debt; there's always that.

I’m fired up that this James Sikes guy could stoop to such new lows in such real life-and-death dealings. People’s lives are at stake (families, innocent kids, genuine green do-good'ers) and the Toyota company is in shambles and desperately trying to resolve safety issues for drivers. And to think some San Diego schmuck might be out to get attention—at the expense of busy CHPs—and at the price of everyone’s jittery nerves.

And I don’t even drive a Prius! Up until last week I would have had little to say about Toyota except possibly slamming their standard operating procedures and their not being near as forthcoming as they should have with the public. But, suddenly, this guy’s frantic 911 call, brought into perspective the no-win situation Toyota must be in. Here they are trying to track all driver’s acceleration problems (on top of other engineering errors it now seems), and you’ve got Balloon-Boy-like cries for fame and lawsuit cash putting the brakes on the real matters at hand.

The original Prius 911 call where the family died (hear it if you can bear it) that started the whole nightmare will forever live in my memory. I can’t shake it. I’m haunted by its tragedy. And I may never, ever buy a Toyota now—at least not for many, many years to come I can *safely* say.

This just isn't a matter to mess with.

And it’s worth noting that I’m talking as a parent and shopper here, who chooses vehicles for many reasons, but top of mind is always how the safety gurus weigh in. Additionally, I’ve probably spent about 10 years of my career writing about automotive brands (Jag, Land Rover, Mazda, Ford and more), and I know what these companies go through, I’ve been PR-alerted to recalls, but I have never seen such horrendous happenings of course as what’s going down at the "ever-reliable" Toyota.

It's a bad, bad scene. And I think Mr. James Sikes did a bad, bad thing.

Bullying. And going Mom-to-Mom in 2010.

The schools are more crowded. And the teachers are more outnumbered. So are we Moms entitled—or even expected—to handle more of our kids' problems on our own? And over email Mom-to-Mom?

I have the forum to speak my mind, so I’m doing so, to hear what you have to say, and because I need you to help a sister in need. This sister. Whose daughter got bullied two weeks in row.

The bullying thing (blehck) happened with my first grader at school. I let it be. But it continued. So I went cyber-solving and emailed the other mom. Was this totally un-PC? Did I do a major taboo Mom misstep? Was it wrong for me to use our shared school email list to direct email about a problem? (It is 2010.)

I won’t get into the problem, as that’s not cool, but Moms who have been there before, share the love. What to do when you’ve talked to the other child, talked to the teacher and things are getting worse and now uncooly uncomfortable—and beyond the “I’m taking your snack” thing. Do you intervene, as there is only so much a 6-year old can do to solve things. Or do you stay quiet in fear of the wrath of a fellow Mom (and how ridiculous is that, really?!).

Lately I’m being more and more unPC, so I reached out to the other mom (whom I don’t know) via email and am waiting on a response, wrath or mutual respect (one can dream).

I know I need to step it up and have some serious peer pressure chats with my girl, but wonder, is going Mom-to-Mom ever an outlet? And over email? That is how we communicate now.

Shame on Sea World? Death of a trainer.

It’s sad. It’s awful. And let’s not let trainer Dawn Brancheau die in vain. In my last week's post here, where I’m giving away whale watching tickets, I started the post by joking, "No, whale watching isn't a hot topic ...” Unfortunately, now whales and their entertainment value, are on the lips of many with today’s death of the 40-year-old trainer.

All the facts are still coming in, but, to me, it sounds like the animal went mental. I say that not to be flip, just to be frank. By no means, am I saying the trainer got what she deserved—as it’s horrific; I only wonder when we will put an end to the animal circus.

Reported facts say people saw the whales agitated, playing or fighting with each other and refusing to obey commands to splash the crowd before the attack. Those watching the killing, while eating at the "Dine with Shamu," show (do you see the silliness of those three words by the way?) saw the female trainer petting the whale when it grabbed her and plunged into the water. It reappeared on the other side of the tank and leaped up holding her, her face bloody. “The whale circled round and round, turning her over and over,” they said.

Now if you know me, you know have a big heart for animals (have been a Veggie for 20 yrs.) and don’t support the life of tricks many of these captive animals are forced to live. A 12,000-pound, 22-foot long force of nature trapped and forced to swim in circles day after day whose only purpose is to splash on command is inhumane. It’s mind-numbing. It’s flat-out greed on the part of parks. And it's something bad waiting to happen.

Yes, it’s important to learn about these animals, and to show kids their vast beauty, but we can do it other ways. Many other ways: on Alaskan cruises (I’ve been, it’s awe-inspiring), on TV, on local whale watching trips and more. No, I’m not a fan of zoos; I really only go to The Wild Animal Park, as I respect their open terrain. Do I take my kids to the circus? No. Do I support Barnum & Bailey and the likes? HELLA no. And have I been to Sea World? Of course. But I don't go often. I'm not saying there should be no zoos or aquariums, but it's a fine line of what animals are okay in captivity, in their enclosures, in their forced habitats. It’s a fine line for sure, but a 12,000-pound animal trapped in such a torturous space goes way over the line.

If we stop supporting these shows and cheering in the splash zone, the demand will die and the animals can live free. Too holier-than-thou? Too PETA-speak for you? Sorry, but animals don’t have a voice, so I speak up where I can.

Michael Pollan and his blasted food rules

Is it just me, or is the whole world talking about the don’t-eat-anything-that-rots Food Guru God, Michael Pollan and his new book Food Rules? Did you catch him last week on Oprah, or ever other news outlet in America? And are you taking it to heart or do you get a headache just thinking about all you’re doing wrong?

I say "blasted" food rules, 'cause the guy and his easy-breezy rules are causing me stress. Take this morning, I just grabbed for my whole grain Trader Joe’s oatmeal, thinking I was doing my body good, but then flashed to his "eat only foods that rot" rule. Packaged oatmeal? I think that ranks up there with MRE’s. Ugh, I ate it anyway, but kind of kicked myself with every bite.

I know he’s right. I shouldn’t eat foods my grandmother wouldn’t recognize. And fat-free has made us all fat. But I have no more room for guilt in my life, and want to run for a Reese cup and Hershey bar when I think of all I’ve got to change.

His philosophy is summed up in those 7 simple words now heard around the world: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

How can 7 little words cause me such deep-set wrinkles? (Which btw, I’d so get botoxed if I didn’t think it’d rot my body and give me the Hurricane 5 Facelift look.)

A few of the other rules he lives by:

#11:Avoid food products advertised on television.

Avoid food products that contain high fructose corn syrup.

#37 The whiter the bread, the sooner you'll be dead.

#17:Eat food cooked by humans, not corporations.

#19:If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.

Pay more, eat less.

#36:Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.

#58:Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

Sassy Cindy McCain. And Foxy Sarah Palin.

What do you think of these moxie media ladies? Did you see Cindy’s NOH8 subtle statement? And are you watching Sarah on Fox?

Personally, I love Cindy’s move and message. Wow, what a gutsy act, and I feel like it got a little lost in the media, so I wanted to call it out.

The usually quiet and reserved Cindy recently posed for this NOH8 Campaign with this loud-and-clear, silent vote for Marriage Equality. Turns out, Cindy contacted the nonprofit photo project to pose, following in the steps of daughter Meghan. Love that the mom-daughter duo took such a public stand in spite of hubby and daddy John McCain’s opposing position. It brings the “stand by your man” message into 2010, I think. And I dig that John handled it well, respecting their opinions, but held firm on his own. “We are family,” but we aren’t issued to drink the kool-aid. Cheers to that.

And as for the other recent right wing media move, Palin on Fox, well it’s not as much of a lovefest from me. Go figure (code for: see my Palin on Newsweek post), but I’m open to watching. Are you? I do think it was another gutsy move on her part, as she put herself in the spotlight with a big bullseye target for those who love to hate her and are just waiting for her to trip up. And of course, it's savvy, as Palin fans are thrilled that she now has her own media platform to speak her mind regularly and clear up any matters instantly.

I surf all the stations, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, so I tuned into watch her debut a few weeks ago. Her banter with O’Reilly was okay, I think he went a little soft on her, I think she totally dodged some questions and overall I think she blatantly used the platform for Pres. vs. Commentary. I expect more hardball hitters from Bill or I’m out. And as for Palin on Glenn Beck's show, I watched that too, and almost did that throw-up-in-your-mouth thing from the creepy love-to-love ya hour of “the world’s gonna blow if you aren’t President, Sarah!” Really, Beck, why didn’t you just fall to the ground, bow three times and kiss her feet (or suck her toes, seriously, what was going on there?).

FOX will get ratings, advertisers will be thrilled, but the whole Fair & Balanced tag is getting a little watered down now with Palin, Huckabee etc. O’Reilly better bring it, or they are so gonna need me to write a new tag for them soon. Have you watched lately? Catch me up.

It's raining Mommy Redemption

Always a hot topic: Perfect Mommy Syndrome, PMS of a whole different kind.

Yesterday, I went in search of cover for my kids in preparation for StormWatch 2010, and we are now equipped with, count ‘em, 4 umbrellas! This is seriously a big deal in my house.

For the last 20 years, if it rained, I got wet. No biggie, right? The wet dog look was just so me. I couldn’t be bothered with pesky umbrellas. The Search and Rescue to find an umbrella in my house was simply never worth it, and I was, frankly, accustomed to the Debbie dart-and-dash run from A to B. It was what it was. And my kids were following course.

So what’s with the umbrella arsenal now? Mom Guilt, of course—that deafening drone, which eventually can’t be ignored.

You see a few weeks ago when it rained, I saw all the other kids in their super cute raingear, fun boots and trendy chic slickers. My kids? I preached the “What, you’re gonna melt? You’ll be fine!” Or I’d send ‘em with Daddy’s boring black pop-up—IF I were lucky enough to find it in my two-second check out the door.

Then, it happened, I saw THAT look from my girl. The one you catch every once in awhile when you see your kids look at other kids with kid-envy and love for others’ mommies. Ouch, right in the heart. My girl’s friend had one of those perfectly charming, clear, bubble, old-school umbrellas that poured a message of “love and a well-cared child” (ok, I exaggerate, but you know what I mean).

So yesterday, we were off to the store in search of cover and Mommy Redemption. I didn’t find the old-school charm, but we found penguins and zebras fixes that will do just fine. Plus, I picked my girl up some polka dot Paul Frank rainboots on sale. Wow, Mommy-Score, bonus points.

So we’re weatherproofed, and ... I’m getting there, as usual … a drop-by-drop journey to be “one of those moms” who always has it all together. A girl can dream. And, let’s be serious, so can my kids.

Somebody just dubbed her the "Frankenstein of the iPod generation," great line. For the love of Jesus, what was she thinking? Here's Heidi Montag on the cover of People with her newest new nose, bigger boobs, tucked ears, sucked neck, higher brows, smaller chin, fatter cheeks, new hips, butt and "more."

The 23-yr. old reality "star" from The Hills just dropped 30k on her new extreme nip-tucked self. She admits she's addicted to plastic surgery (uh yea) and can't wait to get more.

Oh Spencer, why didn't you stop her? Strike that. Heidi's mom would have stopped her I'm sure, but she didn't get the chance, as she wasn't even told. (Imagine being her mom and seeing your all-new girl.)

So ... the post-Heidi? She’s got that Jennifer Grey thing—you know she's in there somewhere, but can't quite figure it out.

And ... the new Heidi hits just as her new album drops (titled 'Superficial' and she says it rivals 'Thriller' omg). What timing. Hey, that's fame. And we may all now remember her name, even if we can’t quite recognize her face.

Sorry Heidi, but boob move, bad message, and, really, you told the world you got a new vajayjay?

Funniest take on Speidi's Heidi is still Anderson Cooper’s shot last year after her Miss Universe performance, saying. “She tweeted she had so much fun, and she also thanked God. I don't think God had anything to do with this production." Click the video below for more.

Oh, and speaking of AC, who's in Haiti of course, imagine if the holy-rolling Heidi would have used her Hollywood cash for the true down and out's of the world instead of her continuous how-hot-am-I makeovers? Can I get an amen?

Gotta go give my girl an extra "you're great just the way you are" hug and smooch.

Sorry, I know there are more important matters in the world as mentioned above, but a little levity helps me keep going.

Cirque’s Kooza is freak meets phenomenal

A Kooza ticket is the hot ticket in town right now. I went, I saw, I was blown away by how insanely hard the show works for your money—and how the whole night is an amazing escapist act from our 2010 realities.

Friday I was invited to the premiere of Kooza in Irvine at OC Great Park. I didn’t quite know what to expect, as I’d never been to a Cirque show. Everyone gushed, “Oh, Debbie, you’re going to lo-lo-lo-lo-love Cirque!” "Alright already," I thought. I’ll see about that with my slightly cynical “gimme your best shot” silent Cirque dare.

And? Well ... by the second half, I was speechless.

Seriously, my jaw dropped, my eyes bugged out, my head was shaking back and forth and palms were a little sweaty thinking “dang, somebody might die here." And when I wasn’t mute, I was LMAO at the audience schmucks who got pulled up on stage. Very funny.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone work that hard to entertain me. It was Big Top contortion circus freak meets Evil Knievel crazy meets gorgeous, artistic expressions of movement and to-die-for music. All jammed into a two-hour show.

Yea, my mind flipped when the girl walked her body backwards around her folded self, but what really put me over the edge was the Wheel of Death devil guys who came out and rocked it like something out of Mad Max. Everyone around me gasped, and it felt like time stood still. The crowd energy was crazy. I looked around and realized at that moment that somehow we’d all forgotten the economy, the war on terror, the daily grind and were just being ridiculously entertained. What a treat. What an escape. The Kooza crew brought it! Intense, captivating entertainment.

I know many pass on the show because of the ticket prices, but it really is insanely worth it, worth saving up for, worth a special splurge/birthday/anniversary.

So there you have it. My two cents on a night worth every penny.

Profile, profile, profile. Enough of the PC nonsense.

After flying over the holidays, I’ve decided that I’m over all of our politically correct American ways. I say profile like El Al. How about you?

On December 21st, I was against profiling as I leisurely headed to Florida--more worried about forgetting all my kids’ video games than I was remotely preoccupied with Nigerian Al Qaeda accomplices. That was the departing flight.

The return flight, post December 25^th underwear bomber whackjob, was a different story. I was spooked. I profiled with my eyes, kept my ears open and honestly wished the US would be watching my back more and protecting my kids more, so I didn’t have to think about where the exits and fire extinguishers were if the side of the plane went up.

Another thing that stuck with me on my airport travels home were images of our soldiers all over at all gates … in their fatigues, with fresh crew cuts and backpacks in tow. They were all well-mannered, but expressionless mostly. You could tell they had heavy hearts. And with every camo’ed uniform, I got a little more PO’d and much less PC; wondering why 30,000 more of our guys had to be sent off to fight these crazies, yet we had to be all proper and PC and couldn’t even profile characters that might fit the bill standing next to us in the airport.

Let’s get serious. El Al airlines has had the world whacks after them for years, yet remained terror-free on flights since they started profiling 30 years ago. We aren’t even stopping all-cash, no-luggage, one-way travelers from Yemen after their family members alert us.

I know the system is always going to fail in some ways, so let’s take all the extra reasonable precautions possible and pull aside those who fit the profile. If you’re Arab, male, 18-30, etc., and we want to question you because people from your part of the world are trying to kill us everyday, it is what it is. That comes with the territory when you want to come here. And if you don’t like it, pick another country.

Harsh? Perhaps. But I didn’t like sitting in 21 A on the way home, and wondering if I should leap over the seats if I see 18A’s underwear light up. And you never know what a Mama Bear might do. Thank God for that guy who took down the Nigerian, thank God for US soldiers I had on my plane, and shame on Janet Napolitano/Homeland Security for saying the US did everything right and that the passengers and crew acted together to take on the terrorists December 25^th. That’s your job, lady, and you all should have never let him through in the first place.

Let the profiling begin.

(No, I’m not ready for the body scans yet; unsure of the radiation, etc. Let’s see how backroom "sitdowns" go first.)

Teddy Bear Tea time at the Ritz

My girl and I stepped out for a new holiday tradition, Teddy Bear Tea Time at the Ritz Carlton. The Ritz is a hot spot anytime of year, but during the holidays it's particularly perfect.

A few weeks ago while at my hairdresser's, my stylist (and great conversationalist) asked me what my holiday tradition was with my girl ... that special something just she and I did together every year. “Uh, um, hmm, let’s see … it’s a, well ... " Apparently I didn’t have one! How could that possibly be? I don’t know, but I didn’t, never even thought about it. So when she said her and her mom always went to the Ritz for tea, it sounded delicious. Special and refined, girlie and something sure to look forward to.

I called the Ritz and sure enough, the last Teddy Bear Tea of the year was December 20^th and they kindly invited us to attend.

From the first valet salutations to the inspired views in every direction, the day made for a gorgeous, charming, princess-like outing. At the Tea, fluffy white pillows lined the floor for the kids and red-checked linens lined their tables. Magic took the stage to wow and entertain. Cocoa, cookies, finger sandwiches and a brunch assortment were elegantly served for all (and Mimosas flowed moms and dads). I could almost see my girl’s invisible tiara, as she fully embraced her special day and Mommy and Me time.

After the show, we walked the hotel, took in the décor and the amazing life-sized surf gingerbread house, then relaxed outside by the koi ponds. There was an extra special Ritz touch and holiday pizazz.

We left refreshed, entertained, treated, and I left with a new tradition. While my girl and I will outgrow our Teddy Bear Tea time in the next few years, I suspect we will graduate to a cup of tea and inspired conversation at the restaurant overlooking the ocean. The pomp and circumstance set the stage for years ahead of rich time together.

More holiday hot is Disney On Ice

If you’ve got time to chill over the holidays, a hot pick is Disney On Ice. I hit Media Night last night for a first look at the ice spectacular. And it was pretty icy spectacular.

You can get a skate-by-skate in my Whrrl photo story (by clicking anywhere below) to see a little Lightning McQueen, Little Mermaid, Lion King and the flying Tink finale. The show was like all things Disney: done right, done big and jam-packed.

It was cute to see my kids lost in the magic, see 'em on the edge of their seats with some of the theatrical drama and simply just see them really enjoying themselves.

I loved everything except … those aisle vendors! Ah, my kids wanted every- and anything, of course. Snow cones. Popcorn. Mickey spinners! So, advice: go full, go with a pre-agreed item on your kiddo’s wish list and walk fast past the merchandising … and you’ll have a perfect night.

The show runs in LA through this weekend, moves to Anaheim Dec 22nd-27th at The Honda Center (buy tickets here), then onto Ontario and Long Beach through Jan. 10^th.

It’s for sure a hot show to catch (was all over the news today)—and I think it would probably be a very fun surprise gift for the kids, if you don’t already have tickets (coupon code in my whrrl btw).

Hot for the holidays, wild animal fun

Nothing says holidays like a 500-lb. lion rippin’ open his Christmas loot.

Hot on everyone's lips is what to do over the break. I reco the good times at the Wild Animal Park. And you’ve got three weekends left to soak up the gifting and watching of antelope and other species at play.

During the park’s Wild Holidays 12 Days of Enrichment, kids get to hand-paint presents for lions, gorillas, elephants, vultures and meerkats. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get a peek at them “opening” their present-pretty boxed goods of popcorn and insect-tubes throughout the day.

2009 marks the first year for these wild holiday happenings. I love the idea and inclusion and kindness to our furry friends this time of year. I’ve always been a big fan of the Wild Animal Park and their natural, wide-open habitat, and their holiday spirit didn’t disappoint.

Other kid enrichment activities going down through January 2nd at the Park include creating mazes for meerkats and making tacos out of hay and food pellets for the elephants. Yum, Chipotle, get on that.

There’s also centers for kids to craft presents for their own cats and dogs, slime time and more. A black light puppet show wraps the night and later evening hours get you your money’s worth (all activities are all free with admission).

Sorry I just can't let this one go. The count is up to like 13. Seriously?! Tiger, what up? You got the Swedish model and go for the Hoot Rat, Hoochie Mamas in Vegas?

What is it with men who gotta go for sloppy seconds off Las Vegas Blvd. when they've got the hot mama at home?

I admit it, at first I was pulling for Tiger when the saga broke, I even kinda took his side with the news of his lacerated, semiconscious status. And it's still totally uncool if she roughed him up, but as the drama oozes like a bad case at a public health clinic, I'm left dumbfounded at my clean-cut, collared, all-American Tiger.

Wow. And they're ALL hoochie mamas. I mean, Tool Academy contestants? Really?

I don't know the pscyhological mind warp behind his "transgressions," I can't understand the illogical nature of thinking no one might find out, and I can't comprehend his overinflated ego and callous family detachment....but at least I learned something from this whole thing.

I now know the definition of a hood rat.

2010 couldn’t come soon enough for me to see the end of the Hannah. Ba-bye, and don’t let the door hit ya in the mass-marketed, overhyped behind.

I mean really, how much money did we throw at that empire of ingenious PR people who whipped up the perfect image to whip our kids into a frenzy?

I’m not gonna go down the road of how that cash could have gone to feed kids in Africa or anything—but it could have been used to buy our kids instruments, music lessons, tickets to a blues concert, a Billie Holiday cd or a Kidrockers show. We all work hard for our money and, don’t have “idol” cash laying around. Or maybe some do and can't wait for the next HSM empire. Rock on.

Me? I’m over the hair, the outfits, the hype, the boy crazy, the cool kids and the gotta-fit-in/buy-me-a-lunchbox image. I don’t think my girl needs to be 6 going on 16 in awe of the likes of the next teen star who straddles the land between tweens and over 18 with stage pole props or whatever to age her up. And I don’t buy into encouraging the empires to churn out another commercial “success.” 'Cause with the next role model American sweetheart, undoubtedly comes the girl who’s eventually a heartbeat away from the boulevard of Britney. And with the exit of another talentless pop tween career, goes our money (keenly mixed in stereo) down the drain. Will any of our kids really be the next great musician because of Miley or HSM? Yea, Beyonce was pop-inspired at 5, but really, she was a single little lady and I think her mom managed her career without having to take a shower every day from selling out.

I say we say no to the money-grubbing execs and outfits who don’t really care about our kids or the crap they’re glamorizing and start supporting groups who do—and they’re out there, like that Kidrocker group I mentioned. Kidrockers is a LA (and NY) biz who books real bands with real talent—bands who normally play for adults, but take the stage for kids. The LA gigs go down at The Echo on Sunset and give kids an upclose and personal look at top Indie artists who have passion and artistry. There’s no millionbillion dollar front behind the musicians, just instruments, a few laser lights and a hilarious comic who entertains between sets. It’s simple. Real. Underrated.

So, while I won’t be hanging at any Hannah concert finale, you can find me and my kids at a bar on Sunset … or maybe a Pacific Symphony Orchestra summer concert or a musical. My money’s on the real deal.

“Should we stay or should we go?”

“This report is now complete." Gulp. Dramatic pause. “I've ordered 30,000 more troops.” Pit in my stomach.

I watched Obama's speech last night. Did you? It was no fun to hear, there were no cowboy cheers and no hoots and hollers. Just pensive looks from cadets and heavy hearts from everybody.

It’s tough stuff. My husband is a former Marine and we went through six-month deployments. It's hard on all, the soldiers, the country, the spouses--and now as a parent, I realize that it could be my little guy or any of our sweet little kiddos out there in the same war in 10-15 years. And maybe it’s our nephews and nieces now.

The country is split. I’ll admit it, I’m asking: Is this really in our “vital national interest”? Should we send 30,000 troops or more to hunt down 100 bad guys in the hills of nowhere? And, seriously, can we even help a place whose economy is whacked with fields of poppy, heroine and other crack I don’t even know about? And what about the cops over there who hide the hunted in their back rooms?

Then there’s the exit strategy. July 2011? For real? Famous last words? Or will it just be the date the bad guys wait out?

Hard to say. And hard to hear when we’re all looking for support and work at home.

Don't know that Obama sold anyone last night. I’m on the fence on this one. My heart and gut says, “No more troops.” My head flashes back to 9/11.

You? For or against? “Finish the job”? Or done with Iraq and over Afghanistan already?

DVDs are always hot on the list, and a lot of kids have had their hot little hands waiting for this one. Did you catch Battle of the Smithsonian in theaters? If not, Ben Stiller and Robin Williams rock again, the effects are amazing and the monkey smackdowns are too much (fun bonus DVD footage of the monkey training). You’ll see the exhibits come alive after dark again, this time as they are going to be retired to the archives of the Smithsonian.

What I like about the movie is there is no inappropriate age thing to worry about and it’s as funny for kids as it is the moms (and dads), who have to watch it 500 times. And it has a solid moral—that the key to Happiness is doing what you love with people you love. Well said.

Will we see Tiger Woods in Thousand Oaks Monday? Will we get the real story? What do you think of the possible tables turned angle in light of the Chris Brown incident? And who do get your news from first these days?

The details are salacious, but the questions are serious. It’s not the TMZ tabloid literal car wreck you can’t look away from here that's got me, it’s the question of possible privileged coverup, what we learned from Rhianna and who is the most trusted name in news that trips me up.

Some quick story catch up: it seems Tiger hit the road Thanksgiving night at 2am. Weird. Backed into a fire hydrant and tree. Weirder. Had cuts on his face (TMZ says from his wife). Not good. He was "rescued" from his Cadillac when his wife bashed the back window with a golf club (really?). Whoa. And then she was found giving him first aid as he was semiconscious in front of his car when police arrived. Hmm?

The whole scene was breaking news on every channel. A little hyped, yes, but because Tiger is the world’s golf God and his injuries could have effected his career and the status of the world’s most recognizable athlete, I see the newsworthiness.

Anyway, wonder what you think of this story as the details trickle in. Me? I’m wondering if the alleged details are true, and his wife pulled a Carrie Underwood “Before He Cheats,” should he stay with his family? Is it good for the kids? Would he stay to save face? Is free speech bring practiced by all parties here in reporting the case? Do we get our news first from the TMZ’s who aren’t afraid to release the non-pc scoop, or do we wait on the CNN’s who want all to be 100% verified and who are probably sitting on scoop? (TMZ did one-up CNN on Balloon Boy, Edwards etc. )

I don’t want to snark the story really (though I couldn't resist the song), as it’s sad on many levels and who knows what’s true. I just think it’s interesting on many levels too. I wish the Woods the best, peace and harmony, I just think all stories should be treated equal.

Peta's new spot that NBC won't let your kids see.

Not to get your feathers all ruffled, but it’s a Thanksgiving day spot worth talking about. See it and sound off, if you'd let your kids see it or not.

Yes, Peta can be WAY extreme, I’m the first to say that. But this spot is borderline, was created with kids in mind, has a girl delivering the message and Thanksgiving grace, and is more toned down than usual. So it’s kind of interesting, particularly for this Veggie and advertising writer.

I just saw the news about it while flipping to CNN, while my kids were in the room. Now my son is vegetarian, but my girl takes after her carnivore Dad. So I wondered what she’d say. She watched, we talked and she asked if we could make her mac and cheese for the feast. I, of course, said, “Yes, I’ll make you anything.”

I’ve always said I’m going to have a chat with her one day to really tell her where “Happy” Meals come from, but in a way, Peta just did that for me. And in a pretty tame, kid-relatable manner. I liked the Peta rep’s answer about giving kids courage (in perhaps a house of meateaters). Kids should have a choice, right?

Was Peta's recipe for Veggie conversion too much? Well, as an ad writer who’s written every kind of print, radio, web and tv advertising for brands from Jag and Sony to Mattel and PacSun, I say it felt pretty good. I liked the POV from the kid, the nonpreaching and nongraphic approach and the upbeat ending. The casting seemed good, and the message was clear. And as for the brand, yes Peta got people talking again.

So even if NBC won’t run it, Peta is getting buzz, and this time without seriously ruffling a lot of feathers.

What do you think (putting past Peta'ness aside if you can)? Should kids be able to see it and learn the backstory of the bird? Or just gobble in blind bliss?

Here’s the segment on CNN that gives veteran Jeanne Moos’ take. I’m confident most of you will vote for the vodka shootup and call it a day. But just wondered. Oh, and it’s JUST a topic of discussion; we can all agree to disagree, right?

Joel McHale. Soo meaty!

So do you watch this guy? Soo funny. I seriously think he may be the funniest guy on tv. It's the only show that I literally laugh out loud at and openly gasp at, at least 5 times per 30 minutes with the "Oh no he didn’t” just say that. The shock of copy. The awe of the delivery. And wow, how he continues to bang it out show and show again.

I don't watch Wendy Williams or Wife Swap, but I find the post wraps hilarious. And the Speidi takes make me giggle (loved the Anderson Cooper/Heidi Montag bit). The deadpan delivery and lines like "use your inside skank voice" and repeating of “smash the homie” Love of Ray J smacktalk gets me every time. I'm easy like that.

Yes I admit it, I was suspect that E! could ever possibly replace their golden boy Greg Kinnear, but they did. In a more cool guy, crisp, whatever way.

Recently I was called "petty" by some of my new OC Family reader friends for my take on Palin on Newsweek, and was dissed for my remarks about how it bugged me that I could only see Catalina when she could see Russia. I can't help but wonder, had my ever-charming, jesting Joel delivered the same line, would he have killed it? Ah, perhaps.

So if you don’t get me, don’t quit me just yet (in the words of Brokeback, and Suz). Think of me, then think of Joel McHale. I'm way less funny, but similarly non mean-spirited.

And if you don't watch The Soup, DVR the guy right now. What OC mom out there doesn't need a little daily trash talking, pee-your-pants funny escape from the daily ridiculous?

Oh, and if you're a Joel Hater and a Palin Lover, I’m really screwed on this one. My sincerest unapologetic apology in advance. I'm kidding! Or, am I?

And before you say it, by "meaty," I meant substance.

Can’t you just hear Newsweek cackling, as they comp’ed their Palin cover? Rubbing their hands together with that Mad Scientist laugh. The gall. The genius. The great debate they were about to run with.

A show of hands of those who think it’s right—and those who just left Newsweek’s readership forever. Personally, I sat with the image many days and came to the conclusion that it’s right on.

Let’s face it, Sarah’s a big girl, she’s been around the block a lap or two, and her women’s intuition maybe should have gone off the second she cocked her head just right, threw a little hip out and gave that sexy Runner’s World leg pose. “Hmmm, this could be taken out of context? Get repurposed? The press could run wild with this?” Thoughts of Perez Hilton, perky Katie Couric and Newsweek should have raced through her presidential head.

Don’t be pulling a beauty queen Prejean on us, the “but I only intended it for so and so.”

Remember Obama’s hot bod beach shot on the Washingtonian? Sexist? He owned it, I think. As should she.

Hey, I don’t hate her because she’s a Hunter and I’m a Veggie, or because she can see Russia and I can only see Catalina, or even because of her kill ‘em with kindness Prejean-like smile (the new duo) when she’s sticking it to the media—right now I’m just annoyed that’s she’s got better legs than me and I can’t even get to the gym when I press myself to do so.

You betcha I like the cover.

How ‘bout you? “Dislike” her because she’s beautiful? Because she ran away from her term? Because she left those kids on the trail and is now toting them on her book tour? Or just because she’s a little right wing crazy and went rogue on such a good guy like McCain? Or maybe you love her. Speak your mind. Everyone’s free to do so, right?

My OC Swine Flu Party Is On

Who’s in? I’m inviting the flu and embracing the Swine. Why wait for the unknown when you could get it over with now?

We’ll have movies, candy, a bounce house, but no antibacterial anything. So come as you are and ready the Tamiflu because we’ll be germ-swapping without a care in the world.

Fashion Island Do's

My video look at Fashion Island’s recent ‘Passport To Luxury’ night out. And what’s hot now. Learn sexy beach hair, Kate Spade handbags, home style and Closet fun.

Do you know this annual event? The Passport To Luxury is fabulous, benefits charity and is FI first class all the way. It’s like a swanky bar crawl with champagne, chic clothing and a Bloomie’s beauty bar. The night (OCt. 15th) was put on by the luxe Riviera Magazine.

We got our passport, strolled the stores and got stamped at six in hopes to win a style spree. My date was my fashionista 5 year old, but it’s ideal to hit with a favorite “older” girlfriend, as you’re mini bar wined and appetizer-dined while you get introduced to the latest fashions.

And you may think you already know what’s going down at the Newport mall, but that’s the thing, you discover styles and stores you may never have known about.

I’m a Fashion Island regular, as I love the outdoor scene, take my lab and the kids get their fountain fix, so I thought I knew all of this mall, but I crushed on some new loves that night with my chance to mingle, shop and drink Lemon Drops.

Each store had their own signature menu to “get you in the mood” for shopping and relax your disposable spending—with good intentions. Proceeds from your night’s purchases go to Juvenile Diabetes.

Hot Moms For Halloween: Hot or Not?

There’s candy ... and there’s eye candy.

Halloween is for the kids, right? The spook, the creep, the wicked witch and monster mash. So what’s with the moms who think it’s a Fredrick’s costume party?

If you’ve hit any early family fun Halloween bashes, you may have seen the Hot Look-At-Me Moms out with their kids. If not, keep an eye out this weekend.

Sorry, but it’s creepy, in a bad way, to see the Playboy bunny ears and bootie or Sex Kitten Elvira Mom as she holds the hands of her cute, little munchkin for Halloween. I know it’s the OC, but the double D’s can wait to come out and play.

This is the kids’ turn. Let’s focus on their makeup, their photos and their loot, and save the goodies for another time and place.

So 4 Mom Halloween Don’ts? I’m thinking the Hot Cheerleader (or other Sporty Girl go-as), the Bunny Honey, the Bad Girl Witch and the Super Hero Ho (yep, I said it).

And if any hotties wanna dress up to get in the spirit? Maybe go to the other extreme this year and think scary (vs freaky). The kids adore Mom in green goo and any unrecognizable attire—and it would surely score Coolest Mom kudos. Just sayin’.

So, here’s to a no Hoochie Mama Halloween. Ahhh, that feels better.
