Growing old gracefully and dealing with the lines

      <SearchEngineDescription />

It was Friday night and I was in bed early. I set the alarm for 5 a.m. Tim and I knew we had to be up early to get a good spot in line. Tim left before the sun rose. I later met to relieve him. It was close to 9 a.m. when the line started moving and Savannah and I were able to turn in our registration form at the local preschool. Yes, just like many universities, our local preschool is impacted. With a slight drizzle intermixed with a little sunshine, moms and dads lined up to get placed on a waiting list. The whole experience made me think back to the many lines I have waited in throughout my lifetime and how these lines become more age-appropriate as time passes.

The Early Years
In elementary school, after getting the call that the shipment had arrived, I remember waiting in a long line with my mom at Toys-R-Us to get my first Cabbage Patch Kid. While the line was long and my patience tested, I was excited the whole time and when I got my hands on Collette Bennett (that was the name on her papers), I was ecstatic!

In high school, I recall ditching classes (okay mom and dad, now you know…only 15 years later) to go wait in line at Tower Records to get Rolling Stones concert tickets. It was a lottery system and well worth every minute. I met some unique individuals and the concert at the Oakland Coliseum was phenomenal.

In college, the lines were mainly for bars and nightclubs. But I have to say I ran with a cute crowd and the lines (if any) went quickly and the memories I do have (while some are blurry) are priceless.

The Middle Years
And now, I am waiting in lines for flu shots and to get my kid into a good preschool. Pretty exciting stuff. Wow, times have seriously changed or should I say, lines have changed. Now I find a different metaphoric message in “the fine lines of aging.” What lines will I find myself standing in down the road? What lines have you waited in for your kids? Please share...I am sure there are some funny stories out there.

A craving for crafts

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

If I had all the free time in the world or maybe just a few days all by my lonesome without the distractions of work, e-mail, phone, Twitter, Facebook, etc., I would love to just create. I have always loved to make things myself. Not sure when this started. I remember when I was in like junior high and high school I made jewelry (still have a stash of beads). Later I moved to painted tile message boards and recycling wine corks for corkboards. When I found out I was pregnant with Savannah, all my crafty projects centered around the little one inside. This is when I really took to sewing. I had sewn a few times before -- making duvet covers and blankets (basically anything square that did not require a pattern), but maybe it was the nesting instinct and hormone imbalance that made me go above and beyond.

The search for bedding for the baby room made me sick. Tim and I didn’t find out the sex, so bedding and decor had to remain gender-neutral and I just really wasn’t so into ducks, teddy bears and frogs. I had a vision and I was going to see to it that that vision came true. So, I pulled out the sewing machine and made Savannah’s bedding (the bumpers with removable pillows for washing, the crib skirt and the matching blanket). And they look darn good if I must say so myself and have lasted longer than I thought they would. Then Savannah came. She consumed me and still does. My free time was spent sleeping. My projects were put on the back burner. And when I went back to work, I could almost hear the sewing machine cry a little bit as I placed it in the garage for safe-keeping.

I still do some creative projects every now and then. I have made Savannah’s Halloween costumes. I made her dress for her 1st birthday. And recently I have been creating little movies featuring Savannah and gifting these DVDs to family and friends. Love iMovie.

Since I don’t have as much time to devote to projects as I would like, I just tell my sister-in-law Melanie what I am thinking and she churns out the goods. This sista is talented!
She recently made Savannah a board to grow on that turned out so amazing! I plan to put Savannah’s footprint on it each year and track her growth (we’ll see how into this she is when she is 16). She also made a super cute sign that hangs in her beach-theme room that reads, “She sells seashells by the seashore.”

Basically, she can customize and make anything you can think of. These signs are the perfect gift for that new couple’s home, to welcome that new bundle of joy, as a house-warming gift or just to add that special touch to a room in the house or office.

Check out the sites below and as a special for my readers…mention Savvy Mom and when you buy one, you get another half off. Need to place order by e-mailing signsoflove@cox.net to take advantage of this offer.
www.createsignsoflove.com
www.etsy.com/shop/createsignsoflove

What talents do you have? What projects are you currently working on? And if you are interested in a box of beads, let me know…my jewelry days are long over!

Valentine's gift tips for the men folk

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

I am writing this post for all those significant others out there who have no clue what to get that special someone in their lives this Valentine’s Day (Tim, this includes you and Valentine’s Day is this Sunday). Now, I am going to be totally upfront and honest. I have never been crazy about Valentine’s Day for the whole reason that all the “staple” gift items are not only unoriginal, but way overpriced on this one day. Tim one year got me all the “staple” items in a very fun and inexpensive way, which I was more than okay with and it still makes me laugh. He got the flowers and a card (a 2-fer considering the dozen roses was the picture on the card), candy (sour patch kids), jewelry (a candy ring) and a stuffed animal (small bear clasping a heart). I have always told him no roses on Valentine’s Day, get them the day after and save $50 (plus I really prefer orchids). Not too sound like a total grinch on Christmas, but I also hate going to a restaurant on Valentine’s Day. The PDA is obnoxious, the service stinks and again, you pay $45 for a bottle of wine you can get at Trader Joes for $7. So, with all that being said…here are some gift/date suggestions for a great Valentine’s Day. And to all the men reading (yes, you too Tim), the bolded red items pretty much guarantee a roll in the hay. I have provided some mood music too...

MusicPlaylist at MixPod.com

Pampering treatments
I recently went to the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa and got a small taste of all the services Pacific Waters Spa has to offer. You can’t go wrong with anything here! Go with the Double Up Couples Massage and then soak in the couples tub. And, if you can’t ditch the kids, the hotel is offering a Romancing the Family Package featuring complimentary Camp Hyatt for up to 2 kids , 20 percent off dinner at the Californian, 20 percent off in the spa, Champagne for mom and dad and cookies and milk for the kids. Price is $295 including room/tax/resort fee/parking and is valid through March 7th. Get more details at HB Hyatt.
If you don’t want to go that big, a nice massage, facial or even manicure/pedicure package would do.

Anything that comes in a little blue bag.
Nothing else needs to be said.

Wine tasting excursion
It doesn’t have to be a crazy trip to Napa or Sonoma (although this would DEFINITELY seal the deal), there are some great local places to go wine tasting. Make a date out of it. Hi-Time Wine Cellar even has some great tasting events specific to Valentine’s Day: www.hitimewine.net/winebar.asp
http://www.winestylesstore.com/
http://www.cdmwinegallery.com/
http://www.lagunacanyonwinery.com/
http://winelabnewport.com/

Mobile dinner and a movie
This is one of my personal favs. Tim and I have done this pretty much every Valentine’s Day and it is super fun. Pick up dinner from your favorite restaurant (we are big Wahoo’s fans), grab a nice bottle of wine and a movie. Pack some cozy blankets, pillows, wine glasses and laptop or portable DVD player and find a romantic place to take in the sights. (Recommend not parking in someone's personal residence).

Lingerie
Okay, this is totally a personal preference, but I am not into the super-sultry lace and bustier-type attire. Some of these ensembles look like you need directions to put them on. I would prefer a nice, soft tank and boy shorts myself. This set is from Victoria’s Secret and is only $29!

Kindle or iPad chock full of sappy romance novels
These are pretty darn cool (despite the name that Apple chose…I mean, couldn’t they have gone with iTab or something a little less related to a feminine product?). I love the fact that you can click on a word you don’t know the meaning of and it tells you on the spot. Put a few popular love stories (Nicholas Sparks) on there and you and your loved one can peruse a romantic novel together.

Magazine subscription
The magazine industry is hurting, but you can help. I love the mags I get…WIRED, Self, Shape. These are all great gift ideas because they just keep on giving and the receiver thinks of the giver each time he or she gets her monthly issue. Plus, a lot of mags offer specials for subscribers like 2-for-1 subscriptions (so you can give the gift to two significant others…shhh, secret is safe with me). Some good ones for Valentine’s Day: Food & Wine, Wine Enthusiast, Self. http://www.magsdirect.com/

Valentine no-nos
Vermont Teddy Bears or any teddy bear or stuffed animal with a heart for that matter. PajamaGrams (who buys these?). Large boxes of chocolate. Gym membership (probably not the way to say I love you).

Anyway, I hope this gives some of you lost soles out there some ideas and to my hubby...you better not say I didn’t give you any ideas.

This is a short and sweet posting. Flew back from the city by the bay yesterday with Savannah. The two of us went back to my old stomping grounds (good ol’ slowvato…Novato in Marin County) to visit Lita and Bobpa and celebrate my 23rd birthday. Okay, I may have turned 23 for like the X time (I am not giving it away), but age is only a number and I feel super young (I attribute this to the combo of consistent exercise and good wine)!

So, this post is really to announce my new title. What was really cool is that 116 people voted!!! Thank you!!! Drum roll please… The winner with 46 votes is Savvy Mom. Followed by Marathon Mom with 41 votes and Fine Wine Mom with 29.

I LOVE my new title and think Savannah will be fond of it as well.

Take a look at my little Miss Savvy flaunting the latest in fashion accessories and posing for the camera. She’s so stinkin’ cute.

Searching for a new title

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

So, Savannah is 20 months now. She will be two in May. And as much I still consider myself a “new mom” since Savannah is my first child and I learn something new as a parent each and every day, I have begun to question my current title and think it may be time for a change. I guess I am asking for a promotion. I am ready to pass on the rank of “new mom” and take on a more distinguished and qualified title (knowing good and well that the responsibilities will become greater and the challenges more daunting but the rewards make it all worth while).

So, with a little help from my fellow mom-bloggers and friends, I have come up with a few of my own ideas for titles. The proposed titles are up for vote and if you have a suggestion you think would fit me better, please share. If I choose a title you suggest, you will be overly praised and rightly accredited when I announce my new title. So, here are my suggestions…

Marathon Mom
This one has a little to do with my resolution to run a 1/2 marathon this year, but more to do with how I feel just about each and every day. My husband opened his own State Farm office just last month and so the "course" has become even a little more challenging. With Tim out the door fairly early each day, I juggle getting Savannah and myself ready in the morning before I head to work. If I can get out of the house 10 minutes late not forgetting Savannah's lunch or bottle, it is a good start to the day. After work I have to get home, bundle up Savannah and get out to walk the dog before making dinner, bath time and then after a few books, bedtime…and that goes for both of us. The juggling is exhausting and just like when I go out for a run, my goal each day is to cross the finish line. But also like my runs, I can’t wait to do it again.

Fine Wine Mom
Sometimes I wonder why I made one of my new year's resolutions to give up wine during the week. What was I thinking? There are huge benefits to drinking wine including:

Wine takes the edge off and calms the nerves

Wine thins the blood and lowers cholesterol

Wine lowers the risk of heart disease

Wine prevents molecules known as "free radicals" from causing cellular damage in the body

Plus, wine tastes really, really good. And this is where my problem lied. It tastes so good that I could easily drink a glass or two or three every night and that is no bueno on the pocketbook or the waistline. But, I know a lot about good wine and would love to share some of my favorites with you in future blogs because many moms can agree; nothing beats a nice glass of wine at the end of the day.

Savvy Mom
Okay, this title combines my love for my little Savvy (Savannah's nick-name) and love for fashion. While I am not always sporting the latest designer jeans or handbag (childcare is expensive people), I try to keep up with the trends and I do the same with Savvy. You should see her closet. That girl is so fashion-forward (special thanks to Berlyn, Teri and Diana for the designer duds).

Loading...

Savannah's first tornado

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

As I write this, I am in bed listening to the torrential downpour outside my window. My 100-pound mastiff-lab, Buddy, is curled up next to the bed (he normally sleeps on his own bed in the living room, but when it comes to extreme weather and loud noises, he is a total baby). For as long as I have lived in Orange County, I can’t remember such rains and intense winds. I mean, the National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings. Tornadoes! The advisory states that the safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Not too many homes in O.C. with basements, but those residents who do have them may be able to make a pretty dime in the next few days (I am going to start searching Craigslist for local basement-sharing opportunities).

Southern California in general is just not prepared for weather like this. Rain in itself is such a rarity that otherwise experienced drivers revert to 15-year-olds who just got their permits and are brake-happy. Gutters that probably have a capacity to hold a good 2 inches of rain become blocked and whole neighborhoods flood. I see people running frantically into their local Starbucks wearing flip-flops (wait, that was me). My family in Minnesota and brother in New Jersey are probably rolling with laughter – I'm sure our three days of rain are nothing compared to their months of heavy snow and blizzards.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a little rain every once in a while, but really, I live in Orange County for the 362 days of sunshine per year (give or take). I love to be outdoors, so this type of weather puts a little damper on my mood, and I think Savannah senses this and also gets a little case of condo fever. (I would call it cabin fever, but we live in a condo, and I would rather be in a cabin watching the snow dump and being first on the mountain.)

With that, do any of you have any suggestions for some rainy-day activities? Any ideas for fun games or crafty projects when you can’t go outside? Please share and stay safe: It is forecasted to get worse over the next couple days.

CBS2 Tornado documentation
Weather forecast

Have you kept to your New Year’s resolution?

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

So, I have been pretty darn diligent when it comes to my New Year’s resolutions. This year I really put some thought into my goals and also took some sound advice – think small change, not huge, global change. It is much easier to take baby steps and complete the climb than commit to running full-steam to the top. So, here were my small baby steps (resolutions) for 2010:

Give up wine during the week (my weekend officially starts on Thursday night)

Train consistently and run my first half marathon in 2010

Accept the things I cannot change or control (more of a personal conflict I need to work on)

Anyway, here is my progress report:

I have been very good about giving up my one, major vice during the week – wine. It has been hard, but I have filled the void with straight, hard moonshine. Kidding. This resolution is not only good on the liver, but also helps save some money. Plus, I really enjoy the bottles, I mean glasses, I consume on the weekend. It is only the second week of January, so we’ll see how long I last.

I am really enjoying my runs. I have never been a big fan of running, but lately I look forward to hitting the pavement for a good workout. I think it may have something to do with just being by myself, just me and my tunes (or bad music my husband calls it), leaving all other cares in the dust. I have gotten up to close to 10 miles now and just the other day sent in my registration for the O.C. Half Marathon in May.

OK, this is the hardest one. I really need to work on accepting the things I cannot change or control. I have a lot on my plate in the coming months, especially with my husband opening his own business last month. This year may be a challenge, but I need to go into it with a positive attitude and accept what comes at me. Challenge makes us stronger and learning to just go with the flow will help me maintain sanity.

So, where are you at with your New Year’s resolutions? And, as parents, do any of you ask your kids to make resolutions? Savannah is a bit too young to understand giving something up just yet. I am working with her on giving up eating crayons. But, for those of you with older children, can you share some of their past resolutions or maybe just ask them this: If they had to give something up in 2010, what would it be? I bet you will get some funny answers.

Good luck to all of you who are trying to stick to your resolutions. Some are harder than others. Just keep telling yourself,
“I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."

Christmas is just two days away, and I am feeling good. I am done. No more last-minute shopping trips, parking-lot battles and long lines. Just thinking of hitting up Target makes me feel anxious and a little sick to my stomach (the sick to my stomach thing could also be attributed to the cookies I had for breakfast this morning. The kitchen at work is a death trap, I tell you). I am really excited for Christmas this year. At 19 months, Savannah is in awe of the lights, the tree, the presents: She truly is as excited as a kid at Christmas. Just seeing the joy she has makes me all giddy inside too. We visited Santa the other day, and while she was a little curious as to why she got thrown into a stranger’s lap, she was accepting of the whole thing. I got some great photos (her niece on the other hand was a little more apprehensive). Her favorite three words now are “Ho, ho, ho.”

I also have to applaud myself for not going overboard. Savannah has one present to open on Christmas Eve – the classic novel, "The Night Before Christmas" – and a couple small gifts from Santa (even Santa and the elves have felt the strain of this turbulent economy). Seeing how much she loves empty boxes and ribbon, I really could have done less and she would be just as happy!

So now, I get to sit back and relax. I get some time off from work to just BE. I get to play with Savannah and enjoy good times with family and friends. From my family to yours, wishing you all a most happy and safe holiday.

MusicPlaylist at MixPod.com

This morning at the gym (so proud of myself for actually getting out of a warm, cozy bed to visit my old friend the gym at 5:30 a.m.) I opened the paper (yes, the paper) to read of the tragic case of the two young girls whose lives were taken way too early. This was a local San Clemente family. Before I read this, I was planning to blog about something more humorous, but I couldn’t shake the hurt and confusion about how anyone could do something like this. These two little girls were so beautiful, innocent and loving…just at the beginning of their lives.

They were like the daughters or sons we all have. The youngest was just months older than my Savannah. I really just needed to get the feelings of disgust, anger, disappointment and sadness off my chest. Children are not meant to experience harm. As parents we should do all we can to keep them safe and show them love. Please share how you feel.

Full story: ocregister.com/news/-224561--.html?

To conclude, I want to apologize to my little Savannah who had to face a little pain this morning. We both got our H1N1 shots today. She was not entirely happy about it, but the cheese crackers seemed to make her smile. I love you Savannah Layne.

Below, Savannah with her bestest friend, Buddy.

I follow the simplicity parenting model

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

A recent TIME magazine cover story focused on the case against over-parenting and how “helicopter” parents came to be.

Helicopter parents: moms and dads who hover over their children. These are the parents so obsessed with their children’s safety and success that parenting has morphed into a form of product development.

I decided to reflect on how I felt about the whole over-parenting thing by highlighting a few areas of the article and adding my two cents.

To protect our kids and keep them at bay, the Kinderkord was invented. These are the leashes that allow “three full feet of freedom for both you and your child.” It’s the “three full feet of freedom” that makes me laugh! I’ve already had the fearful experience of thinking Savannah was lost, so I understand where the idea came from. But I just for some reason can’t imagine walking my daughter the same way I do my dog.

“Less is more; hovering is dangerous; failure is fruitful. If you want your children to succeed, learn to leave them alone. When you lighten up, they fly higher.” I personally think this is my exact motto on parenting. I know my parents did the best they could. They had me in sports, extracurricular activities, etc. They also knew how to guide me without over-cramping. Yes, I have experienced failure and know there were times when I wished I had made a different choice, but all of that made me who I am, and I turned out okay. Thanks, Mom and Dad.

"Kids need free time. They need space to not be entertained or distracted. Boredom takes away the noise and leaves them with time to think, invent their own games and be creative.” So, the next time your kids tell you that they are bored, tell them it is good for them; it develops character.

“People feel there’s somehow a secret formula for parenting and if we read enough books, spend enough money and drive ourselves hard enough, we’ll find it and all will be O.K.” We are all different. Kids are all different. There is no one-size-fits-all to parenting. Sometimes I truly wish there was. I take some strategies from my family, get suggestions from friends, but ultimately, Tim and I are learning a little more every day about who Savannah is and who we are as parents.

Read the story and let me know what kind of parent you are.

Black Friday madness

So, who is crazy enough to battle the crowds on Black Friday? I have never done it myself and this morning I got a text from a neighbor… "going to Toys R Us at midnight on Thursday, want to come?" At midnight? Seriously? It used to be 8 a.m., then 6 a.m. and now many stores open at 4 a.m. But midnight? This drive for consumption is crazy and at the same time I am a little compelled. Here are some of the deals I have heard of…?

Carters is offering 60% off all items in the store. I think they open at midnight. Their ads read something like, “You shop while the pops watch (them sleep)”.
www.carters.com

Toys R Us opens at midnight and if you want to stock up on holiday gifts while saving some cash, this would be the opportunity. www.toysrus.com

Best Buy is always supposed to have some huge deals. Tim really wants a HDTV (yes, we don’t have one yet) and we may have to check out the offers at Best Buy.
www.bestbuy.com

Target opens at 5 a.m. and has great deals across the board…who doesn’t love Target? www.target.com

Walmart also opens at 5 a.m. with some serious deals on electronics. www.walmart.com

I’ve also heard about Fry’s Electronics, KOHLS, Macy’s. Make sure you know the hours at your local malls if you plan on braving the crowds.

Please share the deals you’ve found and if you plan on camping out this year, what advise do you have for the first-timers? Have a great Thanksgiving and celebrate all that you are thankful for. See below for what I am thankful for...

Sweet treat for little feet (and mommy too)

      <SearchEngineDescription />

So yesterday I spent a portion of the day away from the office and took Miss Savannah to a special event for mommies hosted by etnies, the skate company headquartered in Lake Forest. The team at etnies was fabulous, professional and fun, and the firm thought of everything to make this event enjoyable for both parent and child. On-site child care was provided, and Savannah had no problem saying “later” to mom when she saw her new-found friends partaking in all the fun activities offered. And lunch was amazing, complete with chicken fingers and mac & cheese for the little ones (Savvy’s favorites).

Before today, I had no idea that so much study and technology went into making a pair of skate shoes. These guys really do some serious footwork (no pun intended) when it comes to putting out a quality product that meets the needs of skaters. I am no skater, and for some reason don’t see myself getting crazy with a skateboard at my old age, but I respect the sport and now have an even-greater appreciation for the culture. I do however snowboard and love my ThirtyTwo boots. I even plan on getting a new pair this season (hint to my husband who better read this).

But, the draw today was etnies’ new Grow with Me shoes for toddlers. These are so cool. The shoes are not only designed to give your little tricycle motors that extra stability they need when first getting their feet under them, but they have an insert that can be removed to extend the life of the shoe and reduce the impact on mommy’s pocketbook. Seriously, Savannah is only 1 and one-half, and she has gone through way too many shoes. I picked up two pair today, and I hope they last Miss Savvy at least a few months.

So, I would like to once again thank the team at etnies. You rock. And, just in time for the holidays, etnies has passed on a couple cool deals for my readers. Pick up some stuff for your kids (that includes hubbies and significant others) today.

Get $10 off for every $40 spent at etnies.com and get FREE shipping. Use promo code: ETNIES FAMILY. Promo runs from Nov. 17 to Dec. 4.

Also, the retailers below will be giving an etnies tote with purchase of etnies shoes:

Newport Shoe Bootery (Shoe Box) in Fashion Island

Urban Feet in Los Angeles

Powder & Sun in the Inland Empire

Visit etnies.com for information on Grow with Me and more.

Do you send a holiday brag letter?

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

You know what I am talking about: the lengthy two-plus pages, single-spaced 10-point-font novels that explore every detail of your family’s life? Some of these can be hilarious. You know, the one about little Johnnie who got let go from his job at the local paper and is now on-track for a management position at Hot Dog on a Stick. OK, it may not be exactly that situation, but you get my drift. Then there are the picture-perfect family letters that boast about who is excelling in their careers, who has the cutest children and where future travels are planned. Some of these letters make me laugh a little bit and make me just a little sick – not sure if it is jealousy, envy or the occasional bad writing. But, there are also the cards and letters that brag with tact and provide me with the 4-1-1 on relatives and friends who I rarely hear from. With all the letters I have received in the past, I should compile a guide (using examples) on “How to Write the Acceptable Holiday Family Brag Letter.”

I always think of these creative ideas of what I want to do for a holiday card, and then I overload myself with projects. So this year I went the easy route: the family picture holiday card. I so wanted to turn the Bushes into a Wii family, just didn’t happen (still may attempt). The family picture proved to be much easier, and I love the way it turned out. I hired Shoots & Giggles photography to take the photos. The company specializes in children and family photography and truly capture the most amazing moments. When it comes to taking family photos, it can be fun and easy or extremely painful. These girls make it fun and easy for all involved, and the photos are super. I talked with one of the girls, and for readers of this blog they are offering $50 off holiday sessions, 15 percent off custom holiday cards and 20 percent off canvas orders.

I am sharing some of the photos from a recent session with my little Savannah who turns 18 months on Saturday, the 14th. Time seriously does fly by ... even more reason to take lots and lots of pictures.

I can’t believe that Halloween is around the corner. You know what that means: The holiday madness will begin shortly after. Literally, the day after Halloween the spooky décor and candy corn are cleared out (best time to stock up on treats) to make way for stockings and candy canes. In between we can’t forget the cornucopias and pilgrims. But right now, all I can think about is one holiday at a time – and that holiday is Halloween.

Halloween and all the festivities that go along with it have definitely changed since Miss Savannah came along. Costume parties have taken on a more family-friendly approach and the sexy witch and naughty nurse have been traded out for more conservative or creative costume ideas. Not so much drinking and more trick-or-treating.

Last year my little Savannah was a mouse for Halloween. I worked with Savannah’s Ama to handmake her adorable costume, which she wore for a total of one hour.

Recently, Berlyn disguised her as a skunk, which was adorable, but who loves a skunk? This year, I am making her costume again (I have no idea where I find the time for these things!).

Savannah’s favorite TV show (and one of mine too) is "Yo Gabba Gabba." She loves the crazy characters, the music, and when it’s time to dance, she and I both get down with the Gabba gang. So, this year Savannah is so excited to be DJ Lance Rock for Halloween (see adorable photo of another little DJ Lance). We’ll see how the costume turns out – wish me luck.

I also wanted to share some fun, safe and inexpensive (some are free) festivities around Orange County for families to take part in. Please share others you know of.

Pancakes and Pumpkins at South Coast Plaza: Oct. 25, 8-11 a.m.
The Friends of CASA present a Halloween Extravaganza that includes a scrumptious pancake breakfast, trick or treating, arts & crafts, animal shows, opportunity prizes and more. Children come in costume. The event benefits abused and neglected children who are served by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) programs of Orange County. Near Crate & Barrel.

Tanaka Farms in Irvine: (Yes, a farm in Irvine! Tell the kids – Irvine used to be all farm at one time.) So fun! Went a couple weekends ago. Take a look at all the cute stuff for kids: tanakafarms.com.

Find out what’s going on in your city by clicking here.
Click here to see OC Family's event listing.

Today, October 8th, is Read for the Record. Read for the Record is an international event put on by Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation that aims to get children and families to read the same book, on the same day in communities across the globe. The book chosen this year to be read around the world is Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This truly is a classic. Even if you don’t have kids, you are probably somewhat familiar with this fuzzy creature that could care less about sugar intake or overdosing on carbs. If you have never heard the story, take a minute to sit back and enjoy a reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

There are many events going on around Orange County today celebrating Read for the Record and many ways you can get involved.
Growing older but not up

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

So, this morning my hubby (the one featured in this month’s cover story for OC Family) asked me if he was old. Just like that, no beating around the bush, just “am I old?” He is so not the type to care, but I think both of us are noticing age creeping up on us at an all-too-fast pace. Time is seriously flying by. Savannah is approaching 17 months and is no longer a baby, but a very opinionated toddler. I am running at full steam at work, and Tim is opening his own business in exactly 60 days (he has a running countdown on his Facebook profile). Needless to say, we have a lot going on and stress plays a big part in how you take care of yourself – your whole self – body, mind and soul. And yes, we are getting older, and yes, I do see the lines, but these are memory lines, and I am taking them with dignity. But, I too read about the latest in skin care, have wondered about Botox and would not say no to someone offering me the secret anti-aging potion we are all on the quest for.

That being said, the other day I went to get a demo of the Nu Skin Galvanic Spa System. Tim got to be pampered first (yes, the male of the house), and he raved about it and referred me to Karen. Who could say no to a free facial? Plus, this meant I got to get out of the house and have some free time for myself. So, I went into the demo graciously and with an open mind.

I love getting facials, but they seriously add up. At about $100 a pop, I only really get maybe a couple a year, if that. But I love the way my skin feels after I leave. So, the system Karen used is like having your own personal facial service at home. You massage gels into your skin using the Galvanic device, which sends negative and positive currents to tighten the skin and remove impurities. Okay, I am no esthetician, so to get all the answers, visit stay-youthful.spabeautyathome.com.

Karen did the treatment on one side of my face to show the difference, and it was AMAZING. The one side of my face felt so smooth and the skin was firmer. The area around my eyes was where I saw the greatest difference. This system is sweet, and it is very relaxing, and you only need to perform the treatments twice a week for just 10 minutes (I could do an hour personally). So, while sitting watching "The Office," give yourself a facial (maybe not "The Office" – Michael’s antics may not make for the most soothing environment).

Take a look at the video and then go see Karen for a demo: You WILL feel the same way and will probably want to bring the whole kit and caboodle home with you.

And Tim, you are looking just as handsome as the first day I met you, and like Buffett says, “You may be growing older, but not up.” You are my smokin’ hot “distinguished” lifeguard husband and soon-to-be business owner. I love you and sure, you can use the spa treatment, too.

Karen has offered a special to readers of this blog: The Galvanic Spa System retails for $388. It includes the Galvanic Spa with four different conductors (facial, body, hair and spot corrector), one tube of body shaping gel, two boxes of ageLOC gel and four pairs of pretreatment and treatment vials in one box. OC Family blog readers get the whole package at wholesale, which is $285 (plus tax & shipping). Call Karen at 714.488.4388 or visit stay-youthful.spabeautyathome.com.

Does it seem like days go by way too fast to anyone else? I feel like I can’t keep up. I will apologize upfront for not keeping current on my blogs about Savannah. Work has been very demanding, and Savannah seems even busier these days than ever. She is exploring everything, everywhere, and nothing can hold her back. My mom is in town this week helping to watch Miss Savannah while Tim’s parents are traveling the world, and when I got home yesterday after work she admitted to being exhausted. Savannah is like the energizer bunny: She keeps going and going and going. It is hard to believe she is 16 months now. Before I know it, she really will be 18 and leaving for college (hoping mommy and daddy can afford it by then; start your 529 plans now, my friends).

Anyway, question for all you parents out there. When do you start potty training, and can you share some methods that worked best for you? I am planning now so that I can get Savannah into pre-preschool. She can start at two, but needs to be potty trained. I am thinking she is just too young to start now, but I may be wrong. I brought her little potty into the house the other day, and she does like to sit on it, but she also likes to store mommy’s jewelry in it. Please tell me what worked for you and share some funny stories if you have them!

Today is 9/11. It is hard to believe that it has now been eight years since the day of the attacks that claimed the lives of many and impacted the lives of all. I get choked up thinking about it, remembering where I was when I heard the news and witnessed the events on television. This was three careers and four living arrangements back, before I was married and seven years before Savannah came into this world. Yet, I, and many of us, carry the memory with us and today, I hope we all take a minute again to reflect on what really matters.

Like Alan Jackson asks, “Where were you when the world stopped turning, that September day?” Please take a minute to listen. To reflect and to think about what truly matters today and tomorrow.

To my family - all of you - you mean more than you know and I am so fortunate to be surrounded by such love and support. To my present and past colleagues, you have helped me become who I am today. To my husband, I am so proud of you and can’t imagine my life without you. To Savannah, you are my most precious gift. And to Buddy, you make me smile even when I catch you on the couch.

I’d also like to wish my sister Ali a happy birthday. Love you.

So, I am getting super excited. Tim and I leave tomorrow morning for a wedding we are both in up in Paso Robles. I love weddings. I love vacations. I love wine tasting in Paso. Tim and I are also looking forward to having a weekend for the two of us to reconnect, just the two of us for a nice car-ride up to the central coast. We have been so busy lately with work and the obligations that come with juggling work and family, that we have skipped out on many date nights and evenings at home after Savannah has gone to bed include catching up on e-mails and preparing for the following days meetings and what not.

With Tim opening his State Farm office this coming December, we are both well aware that vacations may be slim to none unless they are the hot “staycations” everyone is promoting these days (hey, I’m always game for a night at the Surf & Sand or Shorebreak – two of my favs here in Orange County offering awesome deals right now).
Shorebreak deal: $99.00 Special - Bookable until 09/09/09 for City Courtyard 1 Queen or 2 Doubles. Vaild for stays from Sept. 7 - 30, 2009.

With that being said, we are really looking forward to this weekend. The only buzz-kill is that I am a Matron of Honor. A Matron! That just sounds like I pulled the Old Maid card. Maid of Honor is one thing, but Matron just means you are married and old. Well, I have a mission this weekend – to put that stereotype to rest. This Matron of Honor is going to close the wedding down and those young bridesmaids and the Maid of Honor are not going to know what hit them. My hubby Tim is the best man and I have to ask, why isn’t he labeled the “Eldest Man”???

I also get a little bummed out thinking that Savannah will be back at home – I miss her tons when I leave for just one night and this is three whole nights – wish me luck. But she is in the best of hands and will definitely have more fun hanging out with her aunties and cousins than old Matrons and Eldsmen.

Have a great Labor Day weekend people. Celebrate hard work, accomplishments, health, family and friends. And congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Shanley!

So, I am exhausted today (so glad it is Friday and I can sleep in till 7 when Savannah wakes up). I was up bright and early this morning to help staff Pretend City's media event where the keys to the small-scale city were handed over to Orange County resident and Lakers player, Kobe Bryant and his beautiful family. Kobe seems like a great dad and to see his adorable kids look up to him, and I mean LOOK UP TO HIM, with such excitement, I though to myself… "they're a normal family just like mine and many others.” But they are SO not. I can’t even imagine what it is like to be followed by crowds at all times. To not even be able to go to the local grocery store to pick up a few things without being recognized and bombarded. They are always paraded around with the MIB – you know the guys with the cool sunglasses and wired earpieces. Can’t imagine and not sure I would trade my freedoms and effortless acts to go unnoticed for the luxuries this family may have.

In any case, the Bryant family enjoyed the museum and I personally can’t wait to take Savannah. I am not sure who is going to have more fun, Savannah or her daddy. You really have to see the museum first-hand to understand the concept, but Pretend City is a 28,000-sq. ft. small city. There is a miniature art studio, marina, beach, café, orchard, grocery store, doctor’s office, fire station and much, much more. And going with the family won’t break the bank. Go after 4 p.m. and adults and kids only cost $5 (those under one are just a buck). Visit the site for all pricing and hours of operation.

Hope you get out to see the museum soon, it is really unique and if you see Kobe, don’t call the paparazzi.

Read more about the Pretend City media event at OC METRO.
Exercise makes you fatter???

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

TIME magazine recently featured a story titled, “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin.” I understand certain points explored in the article and admit that I too have indulged in something I may not eat on a regular basis after a grueling workout (not going to say what sinful morsels I snack on 'cause my trainer is no doubt reading this). But, I will defend myself and state that these situations are very rare and that my gluttonous snacks are not all that bad – in moderation (frozen yogurt, avocados, nuts, peanut butter).

Anyway, this mama is addicted to exercise. Have been for as long as I can remember. My perfect day would be hiking El Moro or a long bike ride. To me, to perspire is something of beauty and almost a drug. Why else would I subject myself to two-hour hot yoga classes? Basically it comes down to this for me – my personal goal and the reason I make exercise and healthy eating a priority – I want to be healthy, strong and active for as long as I possibly can, and to make this happen, I work at it. Savannah has made me more determined and motivated to be the best version of myself. I want to snowboard with her, swim with her, hike with her and so on and so on. Is exercise and common sense about what I put into my body an obsession?? My husband claims it is, and I guess I have to agree. But I do splurge, like all of us on occasion, and that is OK (again, trainer reading this, so I am in for a SERIOUS butt-kicking). We all have our own goals when it comes to fitness. Maybe it’s to lose weight, to work on problem areas, to reduce body fat, to firm and strengthen. Whatever the case may be, fitness goals are unique to each person and if your fitness goal is to “fit” perfectly on the couch and throw back a few beers … so be it.

Back to the TIME article: The one gripe I have is that it really doesn’t talk about the fact that muscle weighs more than fat (and looks better than fat too). I have been working out with a trainer now for about two months, and I have gained weight. There, I said it. Now, I am not telling exactly what the scale reads, but I am OK with the number and I feel better, stronger, leaner and meaner (OK, not so mean, actually, I am happier and I think that too is a result of working out more). Plus, I keep telling my trainer and myself that the human head weighs an average of 8 pounds (more for some people we know), and I subtract that from my overall weight. (I will reveal my before and after training BMI and body fat percentage in a future blog.)

I asked my trainer to comment on the article and here are his thoughts:
Interesting article, but they are kind of missing the point of exercise for weight loss. First off, the author explains a lot more about his exercise than he did his food intake, which makes up 80 percent of a fat-loss goal. That's another thing; they are referring to this as a weight-loss study and not a fat-loss study. Exercise alone can’t make a person lose any significant amount of weight. The reason that people need to exercise when trying to lose weight is because the goal should actually be to keep muscle and lose extra fat, not just weight. The problem is that doctors often use BMI to measure how healthy a person is, rather than body fat percentage. If a person loses 20 pounds and their BMI goes down, but their body fat doesn't change, they are in the same position as when they started. However, if a person loses 20 pounds AND 8 percent body fat, they have lost more than 20 pounds of fat and gained muscle. That would in turn speed up their metabolism, make the heart's job easier, and that person would be all the more healthier. The study also lacked a true "control" group. The author mentioned that some of the women in the exercise groups moved less and ate more after exercise, but they should have been asked to maintain everything about their lives besides the exercise.

A big obstacle for many of us when it comes to exercise is finding the time to actually do it. When you have a family, a career and other obligations, this gets even more challenging. I have to thank my AMAZING husband and Ama and Papa for helping out with Savannah in the mornings so mama can get to the gym. I truly believe this time for myself makes me a better mommy and wife. Thank you (and if you don't agree, keep it to yourself).

Lastly, I have had a few personal trainers I have worked with and most have been total meat heads, and I really didn’t feel like they cared about whether I reached my goals or not. The guy I am working out with now really invests time in understanding the big picture. He has a nice way about making me feel like I am the one doing the work, and he is just supporting me in reaching my goals. If you have ever had a trainer, this should make sense. And if you have not had a trainer, but have thought about it, I highly recommend him. His info is below. Give him a call and maybe I’ll see you at the gym!

John Sanchez Fitness
949.887.5561
John is offering readers of my blog a complimentary fitness assessment. Go in, meet with him and tell him what your personal health goals are. He will work with you to customize a plan. John trains at a gym in Costa Mesa near where 17th and Newport Boulevard meet. He also offers private lessons out of your home if that is your cup of tea.

Now for a freebie this Friday: My workout plan from this past Tuesday.

High lunges (stepping up onto high platform) 20 each side

Squats w/ 25 lb. weight, 20 each side

Chest press 20 lbs, 20, 3 reps

Jump squats (this was done in the parking lot of the gym - very embarrassing and seriously made me want to toss my marbles)

Curl press 10 lbs., 20, 3 reps

Rear-lateral raises, 7.5 lbs., 20, 3 reps

Push-up planks (these just plain suck), 15, 3 reps

Crunches, 20, 3 reps

The final days of summer

At the gym this morning I heard the guys next to me talking about football season starting and what games were on this weekend. My mind immediately went to: “What, football season? Summer is over?” Don’t get me wrong, I love me some football. I started going to Niners games with my dad when I was about 3, and Savannah will probably go to her first Niner or Charger game this year. I grew up in Marin County, and like Tony Bennett sings, "I left (a piece of) my heart in San Francisco." Now, in the O.C. and going to college in San Diego, I have to shout, “Show me your lightning bolts.”

I love the fall. It’s probably my favorite season (if there are seasons in Orange County). The weather is still beautiful, you can still wear shorts and flip-flops, the summer tourists no longer crowd the beaches, and yet there is a slight chill in the air that let’s you know fall has arrived.

With that, I am trying to pack in as many pool days and beach bike rides as I can. Savvy loves the water. I think she could spend all day in the pool. Berlyn, who watches Savannah a few days out of the week, sends me pictures (while I am at work, inside, at my desk) of the two of them at the beach, in the pool, enjoying afternoons of slip-n-slide. I love getting these pics.

At only 15 months old, Savannah has some great tan lines. We load her up with sunscreen and she has never gotten a burn, just great color. OK, I don’t push many products, but I love the product line by Smart Girls Who Surf. Cute packaging, not heavy or greasy, the sunscreens smell so good, and the products are made with all-natural ingredients so I don’t worry about putting them all over Savannah. I LOVE the after-sun soothing lotion and keep it in my purse all the time cause it just smells so good and is so light. Plus, this company is local – in Laguna Beach – and was started by a mom with a dream. And I support all moms out there who go after their dreams! You go, moms!

And for all you moms, dads, kids, grandparents, sisters, etc., with birthdays in August, celebrate with a free chocolate lava cake from Domino’s Pizza. Anyone with a birthday in August gets a free piece of cake on his/her birthday (proof of b-day required).

Gotta end off with this: GO NINERS – this is our comeback year!!!

Babies, babies everywhere!

      <SearchEnginePageTitle>Babies babies everywhere</SearchEnginePageTitle>
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

I thought it was spring that signified “new life." Little baby lambs and
chicks frolicking in fields, Easter and new flowers blooming after the
cold of winter. Maybe this season of “new life” has encroached upon
summer, too. I am seeing prego mommies everywhere. I almost feel like a
minority these days and a little left out when not shopping in the
maternity aisle (although I really get a little sick to my stomach
thinking about maternity clothes).

I am also getting THE question a lot
lately too. You know the one: “So, Savannah is over a year now, when
you going for No. 2?” That is a question and conversation that
remains within the Bush-family house. We have a lot going on in our
lives these days. I am in a new position as Director of Communications
at ripeorange; Tim is opening his own State
Farm office in Newport Beach in December; Savannah is all over the
place – literally, you can’t keep that girl stationary; and Buddy (the
dog) is taking it all in stride. (I think he is the coolest, calmest one
of us all, but then again, what stress does a dog bear. He gets treats,
rub-downs and sleeps a majority of the day.)

We know we want to have
more Bushes. Tim says he wants enough to field a baseball team, and I
told him cool, find a new wife. In time there will be more little feet,
more laughter in the house, more chaos and more love. But for now, I
love to hear my friends' excitement when they share the big news. The
journey (the 10-month incubation period – yes, 10, not the nine months that
we all thought prepregnancy), is so amazing. The mystery and
fascination almost overwhelming at times. For all those preggo mommies
out there, enjoy every bit. Write about it. Drink Ginger Ale to ease
nausea and just go with it.

One of my bestest friends just let
the cat out of the bag a couple days ago. It was killing me to not
shout it out to the world. But, I held back and am SOOOO proud of
myself.

Congratulations, Kantruds – good times await! She shared her
ultrasound images and was OK with me sharing this with you. Enjoy.
She asks, "Boy, what do you think???"

Making learning fun

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

At just a little older than 14 months, Savannah is definitely inquisitive, soaking up all she can and getting her hands into everything. I look at her and sometimes wish I had the same enthusiasm and amazement for everyday things many of us just take for granted. She sees a bird and it is “WOW,” a flower “WOW,” and even an empty water bottle is “WOW.” She lights up over everything. I think we, as parents (and even those of you who aren’t parents), can learn a lot from our children. Like to be more intrigued by the everyday wonders around us. It also makes me think about the whole learning process she is going through. Everything is new, and you can tell by the way she examines things that she is trying to understand what it is, how it works, what it does.

Right now I feel like that when it comes to all the social-media tools out there. Like what is HootSuite? How does ning work? Is Technorati the best blog search tool out there? I can’t even begin to imagine all the social-media sites, gadgets, etc., when Savannah is older – gives me a little bit of a headache. Maybe by the time she is older everyone will have gone back to snail mail and face-to-face communication (wow, what a concept, meeting people in person – scary!).

Back to Savannah: I would love to get recommendations on engaging and educational toys. She is very into words now, so I read to her quite often and show her pictures to get her to understand and repeat. She is also quite into music and dancing. If you have a must-have toy that is not just a stuffed animal or doll, let me know and share where you found it.

Also, please share any parenting blogs you follow or social networking sites you engage in for parent/family activities and advise. Spread the love – we could all use the suggestions!

OK, here is my next version of #FF (Freebie or Frugal Friday). I will share with you some great finds I have discovered throughout the week, and then I invite you all to share some that you know of. By sharing the deals we find, we all save together!

First, an update on Savannah. Like I reported in my previous blog, she is toddling everywhere now: There is no holding her back. She is also troubled a bit by molars breaking through. She talks all the time (like her mommy and daddy – very social), saying hi to everyone she sees. I guess she’s already networking.

Here is my first freebie … again, a little laugh in honor of National Tequila Day (Really? There is a day recognizing everything!)

Now, to go with that margarita you may have tonight, check out Tacos El Chavito in HB. Get two tacos for $1 and free pineapple juice till it’s gone. On Morgan Street between Speer and Slater downtown.

T.G.I.F.
As part of Friday’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Buddy) promotion, get $5 off each entrée.

Ruby’s Diner
On Monday, July 27 only, get a burger and fries for only $2.70 (in O.C. only and not valid at the Shake Shack).

Free Movie Mondays
At the Performing Arts Center outdoor plaza, this Monday the 27, "Footloose" (makes me want to get up and dance just thinking about this classic) and on Aug. 3, "Mamma Mia."

OK, now share yours!

Follow me at twitter.com/Kristin_Bush to find more deals …

Happy Friday!

Now I know why they call them toddlers

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

I marked it in the book: This past weekend Savannah started “toddling." Really, she reminds me of a miniature drunk person leaving a bar, hands up or to the side to maintain balance while she sways side to side. It’s comical. It’s also tiring. Gone are the days of sitting back and relaxing (do any of us moms get that luxury unless we calendar it??). I got a personal trainer recently, but I think chasing a 14-month-old burns more calories than any cardio at the gym.

Savannah loves her newfound confidence and beams each time she lets go of the couch and cruises from room to room. Buddy (the dog) has morphed into Savannah’s own personal trainer or coach. He follows her every step and nuzzles her a bit when she takes a digger, encouraging her to get back on her feet and try, try again.

Now that she is walking, I am looking for more shoes. Not for me, for Savannah. Although I am always looking for hot shoes for me, too (what girl isn’t?).

The only shoes we have had some luck with are the slip-ons like Robeez or the eco-friendly Simple shoes.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Otherwise, check out these adorable shoes for toddlers. If you know where you can find these at a good deal, please share. With the way kids grow out of shoes, it seems crazy to pay full price!

Tiny TOMS
With every pair purchased, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. And they are super cute!

DVS
OK, these are too cute. Little skate shoes!!

Draven
Hip. Unique. Funky!

Tim and I had a hard time getting to sleep last night, and today has been rough for me as I am sure it is for many who are in some way connected to the Junior Guard program in Huntington Beach. Tim, my smokin’ hot lifeguard husband and soon-to-be State Farm agent in Newport Beach, grew up in HB, and right when he turned 9 and was able to be part of the JG program, he got involved and never turned back. JG is like another family to him. He participated as a JG himself, he was an instructor, and he volunteers as often as he can to help the current staff. He holds a special place in his heart for the organization and their work, the leadership and instructors, and above all, the kids. We run into many of the kids he taught in and around HB all the time, and they always stop to say hello to Mr. Bush – it’s so cute.

Yesterday, a tragic accident during a JG exercise resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl. Just writing about it makes me tear up. Being a mom now, I can’t even begin to imagine what her family is going through and the pain felt by all those connected to the JG program. I want to take this opportunity to express my condolences to the family of the little girl and to the JG family. I also want to tell my husband how much I love him and my precious Savannah.

Life truly is a gift. Live each day to it’s fullest. Don’t make excuses, and please show and tell those you love how much they mean to you as often as you can.

Well, I am starting something new: Now, on Fridays, I will update you on the latest with Miss Savannah, but also push my own version of #FF (otherwise known as Freebie or Frugal Friday).
Here's Savvy on the Fourth of July.

First, my update on my most precious Savannah. She is getting cuter and more personable every day. This morning, as I drove to drop her off with Berlyn, the two of us rocked out in the car to "P.Y.T." (Michael Jackson favorite). She was in her car seat clapping and moving her feet to the beat. She loves to dance (this is a definite trait she inherited from both mom and dad, and her Ama and Lita). She has also started cruising on two feet with less caution (mom is the one who is now a little apprehensive). Pretty soon she’ll be on roller-skates. Speaking of roller-skates (great transition), here is my first Freebie this Friday: a free laugh. If you have not seen the new ad campaign by Evian, check it out. My abs still hurt from laughing!!!

The Fourth of July is one of my all-time favorite celebrations. Everyone dressed in their patriotic garb, waving flags and showing gratitude for the freedoms we all enjoy. Pre-Savannah, the Fourth consisted of beach cruisers, barbecues and beer. This year, there may be less beer, but definitely still beach cruisers and barbecue. We took Savannah out on a bike ride the other day – she was on the bike seat with dad – and she loved it. We were a little scared 'cause the first time Tim took Savannah on her first PCH strand bike journey, she screamed bloody-murder the entire way. After the last ride, I am so excited to jump on bikes on the Fourth and cruise downtown HB. It should be crazy with it being the Centennial celebration for the city.

Another reason I love the Fourth is because it also happens to be my dad's birthday. This year, my parents will join in the madness that is HB on the Fourth, and we will celebrate America's birthday and Big Bobpa's birthday (Savannah's name for Grandpa Bob). Happy birthday, dad, I love you.

Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Fourth. Remember why we celebrate, and special wishes and thanks to those who protect those rights.

Try this beverage on the Fourth if you and the kids need to cool down ...

Wacky Watermelon Cooler (for the big kids ... adults)
6 mint leaves
1 oz. lemon juice
1 tsp. powdered sugar
Lemonade ice cubes
4 oz. fresh watermelon juice
2 oz. lemon-lime soda
Rum or vodka works (the amount is a personal preference)
Watermelon wedge

Like a mojito, muddle the mint, lemon juice and sugar. Add lemonade cubes, watermelon juice and lemon-lime soda. Garnish with watermelon wedge.

Patriotic Kid-a-rita
Fresh watermelon juice
Cherry popsicles
Crushed ice
Sugar garnish
Watermelon wedge

Blend it all up, pour into a fun glass and trim with sugar and watermelon wedge.

Whirlwind of a week

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

Well, a lot happened to me personally this week, Savannah hit some of her own personal milestones, and many of us are taking in the losses of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

Let's start with Savannah. Miss Savannah decided to take her first steps all by herself this week. Berlyn, her caretaker three days per week, facebooked me about it and called me right when it happened. She's just getting comfortable with the whole idea and is a little like a tiny drunk (a bit off balance with arms stretched out wide), but she is trying and getting more courageous each day. It's going to get crazy in the Bush house very, very soon.

On to me. I started a new job this week. I was presented with an opportunity I could not pass up. I loved my job at Orange County United Way and truly value the work of the staff and the organization, but it was time for me to make a move. I am now at RipeOrange – a marketing, communications and design firm in Newport Beach, and I'm loving it. I work with great people who have a passion for what they do and value their relationships with each other and their clients ... makes me smile.

To close, there was more than a fair share of losses this week. One that hit hard was MJ. Everyone was tweeting (@k10bush) about it. What an icon. Tonight I may have to go home and share a little of what made the King of Pop so unique and such a dynamic performer with Savannah. Maybe a little “Beat It” or we’ll do our ABCs: "They're as easy as 1-2-3, as simple as do, re, mi." He had his share of issues, but still, I don't think many can say a video left a lasting impression like "Thriller." When that video came out, it was the creepiest ever (man, special effects have come a long way). I still remember my mom buying me my first MJ cassette tape (yes, a cassette. Where is the graveyard of cassette tapes these days?). RIP MJ, you will be missed.

MISSING: One Pink Cat

It was a beautiful day in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. The Bush family and Auntie Christina went on a brisk hike to take in the sights and sounds of Mother Nature herself. We strolled casually, letting the dogs frolic in the cool lake water and pointing out to Savannah the creatures of the forest: chipmunks, birds and the occasional fisherman.

We were out for good couple hours when we decided to head home. We arrived back at the car, unpacked our travel gear and got Savannah strapped in for the ride home. But something was missing: Pink Cat (or the lovey I wrote about in a past blog). It was nowhere to be found, and we rarely go anywhere without PC (pictured left). We were pretty certain PC accompanied us on the hike, but maybe left her (PC was definitely female) back at the cabin. We drove home with Savannah in a funk; she knew PC was lost. We got back to the cabin and no PC.

Tim – being the best dad ever – decided to venture back to the trails we hiked to locate PC. An hour or so passed, and Tim came back empty-handed. It was a sad day for all of us.

We have recently introduced a new PC (Pink Cub; right) and slowly, with much convincing that Pink Cub and Pink Cat are virtually one and the same, Savannah is getting comfortable with the replacement. I sat down with her and explained that Pink Cat is happy wandering the trails of Mammoth Mountain, and I like to think that a young bear cub or family of squirrels found Pinkie and are showing her the same love Savannah did. Savannah seemed to accept this story. Now I just need to be at peace with our loss.

We love you, PC.

Should a frequent hiker of Mammoth trails stumble upon this blog and may have seen PC, write back with her whereabouts.

So, I write this blog post while sitting in the back seat of our Subaru Tribeca heading up to Mammoth. After updating my Facebook status to make sure everyone knew I was in transit (cause what would the masses do if they weren't updated on my whereabouts at every given second?), I turned to Savannah in the car seat next to me to find her eyeing my precious iPhone.

"Hold on Savvy," I told her. "Mommy just wants to poke a couple friends."

Then, in this era of new media and mobile devices, I chatted with a few girlfriends online at the time inquiring about apps I could download to entertain my sticky-fingered munchkin.

If you don't have an iPhone, get one or never ever pick one up! Addictingly cool.

So, there's Koi Pond, Blowfish, bab bab lite: What other iPhone apps for little ones are out there? Mammoth is a six-hour roadtrip away – I will try all the apps I can to make the trip more enjoyable for all.

Now back to updating my status. ...

My saviors. Savannah’s angels.

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

First, I have to share with everyone how blessed and fortunate I am to have such wonderful caretakers for Miss Savannah. I am a full-time working mommy, and when I had to go back to work when Savannah was close to 6 months old, choosing child care was the hardest decision I had to make. I think this is a tough task for all parents. I think in my case I thought I was the only one who could mother her; I was the only one who would love her the way she should be loved; I was the only one who could teach her, explore with her, read with her, laugh with her and just hold her.

So, choosing someone else to do these things just hurt my heart. It made it a little easier knowing that Tim’s parents, Ama and Papa Bush, would watch her two days a week (and still do), so I only needed to find care for her the other three days of the week. I looked at center-based care, in-home care and nannies. We had a nanny for a while, but the days she could watch Savannah changed and we then needed to start the search again. It was frustrating and stirred up all the emotions again.

But, the search led to an angel and Savannah’s best friend. I call her “the baby whisperer.” Miss Berlyn takes such an interest in Savannah (and our dog Buddy). She is so patient with her, gentle and sweet, and knows how to make her laugh. She searches babycenter.com and other sites to come up with activities that engage her cognitive and developmental skills – and she is only 18 (so mature for her age). Savannah just lights up when she sees her (again, so does Buddy) and just knowing how happy she is with her makes me feel at peace that she is in good hands while Tim and I are working.

Berlyn also captures moments I am missing and e-mails me pictures that make me smile. Just yesterday I got these: Savannah standing on her own. Walking is SO close! So I write this blog as a thank you to those who are helping raise my most precious asset, Miss Savannah Layne.

Berlyn, thank you for absolutely everything (Teri, you too). Besides helping me keep up with the latest fashion trends and hooking me up with my new favorite pair of Hudson jeans, you are Savannah’s closest friend in the world. You hold a special place in my heart and I am so grateful for you being part of our lives. Happy early birthday.

And to Ama and Papa: I can’t say enough. Thank you for loving all of us kids so much and for giving up some of your fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants antics to watch little Savvy. She loves the time with you (she tells me), and I already see her picking up some sweet dance moves from her Ama and compassionate wisdom from her Papa.

All in all, finding child care can be daunting. Having special people in your life to make this easier is huge. Let them know it.

Savannah has gotten her hands into a bit of mischief these days. And by hands, I mean this in the literal sense. She can’t keep her little paws off anything. She is definitely exploring, examining, extracting and often times eating what she encounters. I have caught her a few times with her hands in Buddy’s food bowl – I’m pretty sure she has tried a kibble or two – pulling trash out of wastebaskets and her favorite, tossing neatly folded clothes from her drawers (see video clip at the end of my blog). When she is caught, I tell her “no” in a different tone of voice to try and enforce discipline, but she just continues with the task at hand with a smile on her face and an expression that says, “Look, Mom, look what I can do. Aren’t you proud of me?” I know she understands “no,” and I repeat it over and over and over, but I think she is already testing me with her charm and seeing just how far she can get.

My mom recently came to visit for Savannah’s birthday, and we talked a little about discipline and took a stroll down a not-too-enjoyable memory lane when I was about 14 to 17 years old – we both agreed that these were the most challenging years for us as a family. I remember this being a tough time for me: having to fit in no matter what, not wanting anything to do with my parents, battling my parents on every decision they made, although I now know that many of these very same decisions will be the ones I stick to when parenting Savannah, thinking my parents “just didn’t understand” anything, etc. It was a great talk, and I took many things away from it. The one point we agreed upon is that there is a fine line between being a friend and being a parent. You can’t always be both, and your kids will not always understand, but later (somewhere in the mid-20s to 30s) they will completely get it. They'll know why parents do what they do – because they love us and want only what is best for us. See Mom and Dad, I finally get it!

The conversation ended with my mom and I finding Savannah in the act of pulling clothes out of her drawers. I turned to her and said, “See Mom, this is what I am talking about. I just don’t know who she inherited such a trait from.” My mom then dug through a bag of pictures she brought me and handed me one that explained everything.

Picture above: Savannah's mommy
caught red-handed.

Like they say, “Like mother, like daughter.”

My first birthday

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

I have to start by saying I am so glad that the party has passed. We decided to keep it small and sweet, limit it to family and a few good friends. No bounce houses or clowns, Disney princess appearances or Build-A-Bear, just a few balloons, some good food and lots of adult beverages. Even with this small-scale concept, I made it more work than it needed to be. This is a fault that I admit to - I always put too many projects on my plate and raise the bar higher and higher.

First, I made a banner with photos of all those invited with Miss Savannah and had guests write a personal message to Savannah on her first birthday...Number of photos for banner: 33. Trips to Michael's: 5. Hours to make banner: 13. Memories: Okay, I have to say it turned out pretty darn cute and I and Savannah will forever treasure the messages...so ultimately: Priceless.

Second, the food prep. Never an easy or fun undertaking. We went with build-your-own pork sliders. This was relatively easy since we crock-potted the pork the night before. Love the crock pot, nothing better than throwing a bunch of ingredients together in the morning, putting the dial on self-pilot and waa-laa - dinner is done.

Third, the cake. I made Savannah's cake to match her western-theme party. It took 4 boxes of cake mix, 5 cans of frosting, 2 packs of Kit-Kats, 1 trial attempt and lots of volunteers offering to try the cake and lick the bowl (my favorite part).

The best and most humorous part about this is that with all the labor (sweat and tears), Savannah had no clue what we were celebrating. Nap-time ate up a good portion of the party and she was more interested and entertained by tearing up the wrapping paper versus what was contained within the boxes. But we all do it. We all go over the top and why? Well, we love our kids. Next year, I will show my love for her by celebrating with PB&J on a blanket at the beach. Maybe when she is a little older and "gets it," I will look into having Cirque du Soleil in my backyard, we'll see.

Tell me, what have you done to celebrate the birthdays of your little ones? Any crazy over-the-top parties you regret or would do differently? Please share.

The hot date

      <SearchEngineDescription />

So, I have had a handful of friends and loyal readers ask about my hot Mother’s Day date. My first Mother’s Day was PERFECT. I woke up to Savannah curled up beside me (guilty…I still pull her in bed with me when she wakes up just a bit too early for mommy) and took in her peaceful preciousness and thanked the powers above for blessing me with a beautiful, healthy and happy baby girl. We then woke and did the changing thing, followed by the breakfast thing and the walk-the-Buddy thing – the normal morning ritual.

In the afternoon, my amazing husband gave me the hall pass to go to hot yoga. Woo-hoo…an hour and a half of me time, sweating out the toxins (to make room for the wine I would intake that night) and allowing the stresses of the world to disappear. After hot yoga I got to take a little extra-lengthy hot shower taking time to shave my legs (more of a rarity than I would like to admit) and exfoliate. I then got to blow-dry and do my nails. For those of you who are not yet moms, this may sound like a standard day, but for me and many new mommies, getting to do just one of these things is a luxury. Then, I slipped into my “smokin’ hot” dress that I purchased on behalf of Tim for our Mother’s Day date. Okay, I confess, Tim did pick out a cute sundress, but I returned it for something a little less “Jimmy Buffett-concert attire” for something a little more “chic and sophisticated” – he understood and I think he liked my choice better (not too mention I paid less for the dress I found which gave me the right to buy a shirt too...like how I worked that angle).

The babysitter arrived at 5:30 and we were at Main Street Wine Cellar in Seal Beach by 6:15 (way earlier than our pre-parent 8 p.m. dinner dates). We ordered a flight of reds (the Zin was amazing), a cheese flight and more wine…I am salivating right now thinking about it. After, we stopped off at Captain Jack’s in Sunset Beach for another glass of wine, mud-pie and some live music in the dark, sultry lounge – if you have never been to the Captain…you have to go. The topper of the night: we were home by 9:30 p.m. – we just can’t party like we used to. All in all, it was the best Mother’s Day and Tim, thank you for making me feel so special.

So, this coming week and next mark two big milestones: my first Mother’s Day and Savannah’s first birthday. While I am busy planning for her big day (which she will not remember), I have not put as much thought into “my” big day. I mean, I deserve a little recognition, right? I feel like both celebrations should honor the efforts of all of us.

Savannah may be turning 1, but Tim and I and Miss Savannah made it through what is said to be one of the toughest years – the first year (now on to the terrible twos and testy threes). And Mother’s Day, well, I have to thank Savannah for being such an amiable baby and my husband for being such a great daddy and partner – I am a mommy every day and you both make that role so rewarding. But, still, I have to say I like the idea that one specific day is set aside to honor us mommies, our hard work and selflessness.

So what am I going to do to celebrate my first Mother’s Day? No, I didn’t ask for jewels or breakfast in bed (although I have been working with Savannah on how to say “mommy likes the little blue box”). I asked my husband to buy me a dress, something he thinks I would look “smokin’ hot” in, and take momma out to a nice, romantic dinner. Funny request for Mother’s Day, huh? Well, here’s my thinking: With a 1-year-old, date nights are few and far between, and I don’t get the luxury to pamper myself all that often (getting an opportunity to actually do my hair is a treat I look forward to). So, I getting a pedicure (can’t wait) while Tim and Savvy pick out a dress for mommy. My mom is also flying in on Mother’s Day morning so that I can pamper her, and we all plan to do a picnic at the beach.

So, what are you doing for Mother’s Day? Whatever you have planned, enjoy – every mom deserves a little treat, whatever it may be. And, if you know of any cute dress shops I should send Tim to, let me know!

So, Savannah and I had a serious talk the other day about our current state of economic affairs. We talked at length about the increasing unemployment rate, the collapse of many financial institutions and the demise of the Big Three, in addition to various other factors collectively taking their toll on our nation. She seemed impartial until I started concentrating on how mommy and daddy needed to save money to weather the storm, and this would mean not buying the overpriced brand-name baby treats, but the generic version; no more designer baby jeans, but more hand-me-downs (thanks, Mel); no more spa days with mommy … wait, no, we can still do those, Savvy. She also laid down the law on generic diapers and offered to assist mommy when clipping coupons for her preferred brand (starts with a P and ends with an S).

"Mommy, where's the money
you said you flushed down the toilet?"

Anyway, I was talking with a fellow mommy and friend the other day about how every day it is doom and gloom in the news about how the economic downturn is taking its toll. Yes, these are hard times; we get it already. We are experiencing it firsthand, and in my profession, I see the number of people who need help growing exponentially. But, there is some good news within the bad: Many stores and restaurants are offering super-great deals to lure us consumers back. Here are a few Savannah and I have found …

Babystyle and Right Start are having some great sales since they are going out of business (Babystyle’s site is already down, but I think there are a few stores out there).

Tsunami Sushi in Huntington Beach (right down the street from us) is offering specials like Flat Broke Wednesday: two-for-one teppan. Savannah loves the eel roll.

Know of any other great deals out there? Please share, and if anyone is up for sushi or teppan, let me know. Savannah and I will start saving up!

Just today I got my e-newsletter from BabyCenter – the one I get every week as a sort of tracking tool to see where Savannah is developmentally. I really enjoy these newsletters; they contain some fun game ideas to play with Savvy and extend parenting tips, some of which make me go, "ah-hah," and others that make me say, "You've got to be kidding me." Anyway, today's talked about transitional objects or "loveys." For many kids, it is the satin-edged blanket that after years of love and numerous washings looks more like a dirty kitchen rag contaminated with who knows what. Savannah has a "lovey" for sure. Tim and I call it "Pinkie" or "PC (Pink Cat)" or "P-cubed." Pinkie goes everywhere with us, and I mean everywhere. This soft, satin half-blankie, half-stuffed-animal creature is a necessary travel companion and a must-have at bedtime. It is amazing to see how Pinkie calms Savannah's nerves.

Little Miss Savannah with Pinkie
and the thumb – the perfect combo.

I have heard that giving up these "transitional objects" can be tough later, through my mother-in-law's story of how she started cutting portions of my Timmy's blanket until there was eventually no blanket left (he still had a little piece just last year. It was a huge blanket).

For now, I am totally cool with Pinkie. My motto, if it makes Savannah happy, mommy happy and daddy happy, more Pinkie power! I mean, come on, we all have something that we need to comfort us. For me, it's wine. Like Pinkie, wine makes me happy when I am fussy and helps relax me before bedtime. Now, if only I could get away with dragging a bottle with me wherever I went like Savannah does with Pinkie, life would be good.

So, share: Do you have a "transitional object"? Does your little one or your husband?

The family dog

I grew up with two golden retrievers, Buff and Ashley. Ashley, the younger of the two, passed away of cancer at around 7 years old. Buff, the older male, lived to be 19, and was put down while I was in college and studying abroad in Spain. Buff and I grew up together. That dog meant so much to me and still holds a special place in my heart. If you’re not a dog person, you have no idea how much you can love these faithful four-legged friends. I remember one night on a return-trip home during college, my mom told me Buff was not doing well and would probably not make it through the night. That night, I slept on the kitchen floor with Buff. He woke up frisky as a puppy, and I woke up with serious back pain. He lived a couple years longer, and when he could no longer get up to eat (bad hip dysplasia), my dad took him to be put down. It was one of the hardest things I think he has ever had to do and something that gets me choked up just thinking about it.

Anyway, the Obamas recently welcomed Bo to the White House. I wonder who picks up after Bo if he has a movement in the Rose Garden?? Secret Service or Malia and Sasha? Do you think the president himself will clean up after man’s best friend? At our house, Buddy is second-in-command. He used to be first-in-command – the baby of the house – but Savvy has taken his place, and I think he has finally accepted this (it took some time for him to get used to sharing the limelight). These two are best friends. Nothing makes Savannah smile more than seeing her Bud-dog in the morning. She is so close to saying his name now, and Buddy couldn’t be more proud. He gives me this look like, “That’s right, she said my name first. Shows you who’s boss.” He lies in her room while she sits next to him and reads her favorite book: "Good Dog, Carl." It really is the sweetest friendship.

The other night, we watched "Marley & Me." Made me think about how I prepare myself for the time when Buddy goes to doggy heaven. How I explain the loss of a friend to Savannah. But for now, I will not think about it. I will take Buddy to dog beach as often as I can. I will capture pictures of Buddy and Savvy growing older together, and I vow not to watch sappy, tear-jerking movies like "Marley & Me" or "Old Yeller" ever again.

Written by Savannah’s daddy and Huntington Beach lifeguard, Tim Bush …

Growing
up in Huntington, I was constantly at the beach and in the water. Still
a seasonal guard for the city, I have experienced my fair share of
rescues involving children (and adults) who are not skilled swimmers or
the least bit comfortable in the ocean. I have been very involved in
Huntington’s Junior Guard (JG)
program – back in the day I was a JG myself. I was also an instructor
for many years and now starting a family of my own, I will be an
involved parent of a JG (Savannah has no say in the matter – she will
be a JG). Living where we do and determining vacations based on where
the best surf is, it is so important to me that Savvy is comfortable in
the water and even more, enjoys it.

That enjoyment and comfort comes from getting her in the water when she
is young, and we have done just that with her. We had her in my
brother’s pool when she was just about 2 months old. This past summer
(when Savvy was about 3 months), we rented a house in San Clemente, and
she was in the pool daily. Now, we are taking Parent & Me classes
through the city, and I’m not sure who is enjoying them more: me, mommy
or Savvy. I get to learn all the words to "The Wheels on the Bus" and
"Humpty Dumpty," Kristin mingles with all the other mommies, and
Savannah grins from ear to ear. It makes me smile just thinking about
it. Good times.

– Dad

Mom here ...

I wanted to share some ideas for parents looking for swim instruction for their little ones. If you have more, please share.

If you live in HB, the city offers a ton of fun programs, including swimming. Check 'em out here.

A
very good girlfriend of mine is currently being trained as an ISR swim
instructor for babies and toddlers (way to go, Sierra!!). Sierra’s son
Vincent fell in the pool when he was 10 months old. Thankfully, little
Vince was pulled from the water quickly, and he is fine (these things
happen so fast). Sierra immediately researched water safety lessons and
enrolled Vincent into an ISR program. At just 2 years old, little Vince
was able to swim, float and find an edge even with jeans, tennis shoes
and a hooded sweatshirt on. Learn more about ISR at infantswim.com or through a recent article.

And check this out: OC Family blog readers who sign up for classes now get a HUGE discount!!! Contact j.orwick@infantswim.com for more details on costs, class times, etc.

Calling All HB Mommies…

If
there are any moms in the HB area interested in doing a class together
at a pool in HB, let me know! Miss Sierra (who is lovely, fun, the
whole bit) will be certified in June and will be available to teach
lessons for a group of children at one person's home. This would be
tons of fun for the ladies and the little ones. Let me know!!

OK, I pretty much hate forwards. I can't keep up with all the work-related and personal e-mails I get, so when I see FW: in the subject line, I scroll quickly and hit delete. But this one speaks to me. I was laughing out loud (LOL in text lingo) when I read it and thought of Savannah the entire time. Savannah is approaching 11 months and is mastering all the laws outlined below. I can't wait to see what she is like at 2. For all those parents out there, I am sure you can relate, and please feel free to FW: to your friends.

1. If I like it, it's mine.
2. If it's in my hand or mouth, it's mine.
3. If I can take it from you, it's mine.
4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine.
5. If it's mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way.
6. If I'm doing or building something, all of the pieces are mine.
7. If it just looks like mine, it's mine.
8. If I saw it first, it's mine.
9. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine.
10. If I think it's mine, it's mine.
11. If it's broken, it's yours.

I can't tell you enough how happy I am that it is Friday. This week has
been challenging – to say the least. A lot packed in and running short
on energy. Savannah had her first week of Parent and Me swim
instruction at the city pool in Huntington this past week. Two nights a
week at 6 p.m. (it's tough getting there on time from work, but it's so
worth it). I so want the instructor's job. He gets to play around in a
lukewarm pool and sing goofy songs – and he gets paid for it too. (I
really think my husband missed his calling.) Anyway, this class is
priceless, and I got some great video I hope to share with all of you.

But,
back to what I really want to say: Happy Friday. Enjoy your weekends.
Play hard and relax. Spend more quality time with your babes (spouses
and kids). Sip wine. Take time to just close your eyes and soak in the
sun, and if the weather doesn't cooperate, dance barefoot in the rain.
This song will put you in the mood.
Note: You have to join to listen, but it's totally worth it!

I am going to make this short and sweet. Enough already with the Octomom. Every day there is something in the news about this crazy mom and her even crazier antics. When I pick up the paper, the top stories center around AIG bonuses, the bailout of the big players in the auto industry or anything about Octomom. How has Octomom’s recent move to La Habra impacted home values in the neighborhood? What help staff or nurses have been fired because of Octomom? And most recently, will Angelina Jolie give money to Octomom?

Here’s my take …

• If I lived on the street where she moved in, I would either consider moving or invite carnival acts, including elephants, chimpanzees and fire blowers to perform out of my home (that would divert some attention away from Octomom and place it on another kind of circus).

• For those who lost their jobs because of Octomom, at least it will make for a good story in future interviews.

• And if Angelina wants to do something to help these kids, why doesn’t she invite look-alike Octomom over for a playdate?

OK, maybe I am out of line, but those are my thoughts. Now back to my normal life that I love so much!

Savannah is 10 1/2 months now, and for about the past two weeks, she has been waking up again in the middle of the night a few times – not so much because she is hungry, but really to be cuddled. I have tried waking up, comforting her for a bit and putting her back down, and she just won’t have it. But, if I bring her in bed with Tim and I, she sleeps a bit better (still waking up every once in a while, but not standing up in her crib screaming for someone to rescue her).

Don’t get me wrong, I love to cuddle with her; it’s probably my most favorite thing in the world. But I also don’t want to make a habit out of bringing her in bed with us every night. It’s a slippery slope. I think I would work harder and stick to putting her back in her bed over and over if it weren’t for the fact that I am working and really need my sleep. Is this a stage? Are there any tricks to try? I know she is teething, so the herbal drops and tablets seem to help a bit, but when it wears off she is up again. Hmmm ... you know those water bottles you place on the outside of cages for the cute little rabbits and hamsters? Maybe I can put one of those on Savannah’s crib with a little rum – I mean teething drops. Anyway, empathy is appreciated as well as suggestions that may help all of us get the sleep we need.

The first birthday

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

So, Savannah turns the big 1-year in May, and I am wondering what to do to celebrate. My first thought was Mutt Lynch’s in Newport Beach (famous schooners), but wasn’t sure the place hosts toddler parties (although half the patrons could be considered big toddlers, and I have seen more than a handful crawl out of there).

Schooner for me,
schooner for you (c'mon, it's apple juice!).

My next idea was a spa day at Pelican Hill, but again, not sure Savannah would enjoy the mud bath or facial just yet.

So, I am leaning toward a small, intimate family party (if you call 20 family members small), because really, Savannah has no idea, and I don’t want to spend our mortgage payment on a party she will never remember. I’ll save that for when she is older and I (I mean she) can really appreciate it. But for this one, Tim and I are celebrating with the fam and drinking to the fact that we made it through the first year, and Savannah still has all her limbs and seems pretty darn happy. Yet, I am looking for fun ideas or traditions other parents have incorporated into their kid’s birthdays, so please share.

Also, in looking at ideas for parties, I found some places I think would be tons of fun for a day activity or maybe a party down the road. If you know of more, share those too.

Check out Zoomars in San Juan Capistrano (take the train; it’s right across from the station) or Sea Life Aquarium, which is part of Legoland Resort. I personally haven’t been, but a friend works there and it sounds awesome, even for the babies with so much to look at. There's also the Carlsbad Flower Fields. This Saturday is Kids Day with a bunch of cool activities.

I feel like I am missing out on something huge today: Savannah’s opportunity to meet the first president of her lifetime. As I work away, I can’t help but think about what I would ask Obama if I got the chance. Here’s a list of some of Savannah's and my top 10 …

1. (Savannah) Do you think investing in Cheerios could help to bring back our economy? Everyone loves Cheerios.

2. Can I get bailed out if I make an unjust, unsound and rash financial decision, and then can I also get a huge bonus? Pretty please?

3. Do you tweet or have someone tweet for you? Do you think these social networking sites are causing a loss of job productivity?

4. (Savannah) Have you ever seen Yo Gabba Gabba? I think you should be the guest dancer: "My name is Obama, and I love to dance.”

5. Did you have a green beer last night? Domestic or imported?

6. Thank you for supporting and endorsing more community service. Can we somehow encourage more corporate partners to create and implement VTO hours (volunteer time off), allowing workers to get more involved in their communities and give back? This would be a huge benefit not only to employees, but to our nation.

7. (Savannah) Do your daughters babysit? My mom wanted to know.

8. My husband is opening up his own business in December. Do you have
State Farm insurance? Can we provide you and all those you know with a quote?

9. Are you involved in a NCAA March Madness bracket? Who did you choose to take it all?

10. (Savannah and mom) I know you are a firm believer in going green. I am all for it too, but can you make it a little more affordable and a little less messy when it comes to diapers? Maybe tax credits for families who use cloth diapers or use a diaper service?? Hmmm???

For those of you who can’t make it, but are interested like I am, check out ocmetro.com as they tweet live from the event.

With St. Patty’s Day tomorrow, I wanted to take this opportunity to say how lucky I feel to have a beautiful, healthy and happy little girl; a wonderful husband; great friends and family; a job I love; and much more. These are trying times for many families, and I have had friends lose their jobs and their homes. I know that there are many families dealing with greater and more difficult situations than I can ever know (see recent story of Orange County hotel families) during these times and my complaints of too little space, wanting a bigger house and a yard are unwarranted.

We are more than fine with where we are at and fortunate for all we have. This St. Patty’s Day, take time to think about what you are really lucky for. Maybe make it a game with the kids and have them share what they feel lucky for in their lives. Celebrate these riches in your life with a green beer or two or three (make it a green root beer for the little ones). Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Becoming the best version of myself

      <SearchEngineDescription />

On a recent drive out to Arizona to see the Angels take on the Giants during a Spring Training game, Tim and I listened to Matthew Kelly talk about how we all can become the best versions of ourselves. On long road trips we often check out books on CD from the library or upload them to our iPod to make the trip go by a little faster, and I think they even help Savannah fall into a deep sleep. (Savannah did so well on the last trip; she fell asleep an hour into the drive and did not wake up until we got to Arizona. Driving through the night can be tough sometimes on Tim and I, but we have learned that this is much easier and more relaxing than trying to confine while entertain an active infant in a car seat for six hours during daylight.)

Matthew Kelly is a very inspirational and thought-provoking author. On our trip, the question addressed by Kelly was, “What are your dreams?” Tim and I took time out to talk about this with each other, and besides my dream of a new Mercedes S-class, beachfront home in San Clemente and anything from Tiffany’s, most of all, our dreams centered on becoming the best versions of ourselves for Savannah and raising our family in this same light, encouraging our children to become the best versions of themselves. We decided that each year we would like to take a family vacation in which we'll give back wherever we go. Maybe the vacation happens to be local, like a weekend getaway to Santa Barbara where we can enjoy the beaches, downtown shopping and read stories to kids at the public library through the Reach out and Read Program. You can search for many opportunities through your local United Way volunteer sites and Volunteer Vacations. Have any parents out there done something similar and if so, have any recommendations? Please share!

I also found this recently and think it is a great idea …

Parenting Time Review. Make a quick list of the number of things you got done last week and the time you spent on getting them done. Then jot down the amount of time you approximately spent with your kids. Next, check your list to spot any activities where you could have included your kids. Plan how you can weave your children into your social life and knit yourself into their lives.

Matthew Kelly "Building Better Families"

And for everyone, especially moms, listen and digest this message from
Matthew Kelly.

And at the end of the day, ask yourself: “What have I done for myself physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually today?” This is truly important and can help us become the best versions of ourselves.

Find inner peace at 100 degrees

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

It’s called hot yoga, and it rocks. I have been practicing hot yoga now for close to three years and love it. I took a hiatus when I found out I was pregnant with Savannah (longest 10 months of my life) and got back to the studio when she was around 3 months. I look forward to the nights I can get to class. I used to go close to four times a week, but now I am lucky to get there twice a week and ecstatic if I make it in three times. Once I walk into that toasty room with its relaxing mood lighting and healing hymns, all the weight of the day is removed from my shoulders, and my mind is cleared, allowing me to tune in to me and channel my inner sanity – which I sometimes feel I have lost. This is a perfect and much-needed release for all those moms out there. Not to mention, a great workout and body cleansing (you walk out dripping – no exaggeration, bring your towels). Looking to get into that yellow polka-dot bikini this summer – hot yoga will help make that happen.

There are a lot of studios out there; I have tried a handful. But, the one I like the most and just happens to be located near me in Huntington Beach is CorePower Yoga (there is also a studio in Aliso Viejo). CorePower Yoga offers more than just your basic yoga classes. They have various courses (not all in heated rooms) for every skill level and offer special nutrition and boot camps to really kick your butt in shape (no joke, your butt will ACTUALLY hurt). I challenge you all to give it a try – and not only once, go a few times before you decide if it’s for you or not. The studio extends all first-time students a free week of yoga, so what’s stopping you?

Don’t have time? Try Yoga On Demand at home or at the office (on your lunch break of course).

Here are some special classes coming up: Nutrition Program and Boot Camp.

Get out there and do it, ladies, and let me know how you like it. And, if you have tried it and know of a different studio (maybe in the Inland Empire), please share.
<SearchEngineDescription />

OK, Savannah definitely doesn’t want to be tied (or taped) down. At 9 1/2 months, she is one active cookie and wants no part of having her diaper or clothes changed. This process has gone from an easy one-person task to a dueling two-person challenge. The other day while trying to keep her still by using my legs to trap her down, I thought, “man, this would be so much easier with a little duct tape.” For all you parents out there about to call CPS, it was ONLY a thought. I have found that by giving her something of mommy's – my cell phone, gym card, necklace – I get a small window of time to execute the task at hand.

This brings up another question: Who in their right mind decided it was a brilliant idea to have about 20 snap buttons on infant clothing?? Really? It never fails that I am always a snap or two off and am racing to complete the job before my window of time is exhausted (sounds like a good game-show challenge). I am sure many of you can relate and can share some funny stories, so please do.

Also, check out the list of 101 uses for duct tape. You know you are guilty of thinking of acting on some of these, if not trying many. I have had a few friends try No. 65 – hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to look good, people. I have thought of No. 125 on more than one occasion – totally kidding, Syl.

And who hasn’t thought of No. 45 (mute function for SPOUSES)? Looking for a fun game with the kids – try No. 226. I bet the little ones will come up with some imaginative ideas that are not on the list!

NOTE: Picture found on Google. THIS IS NOT SAVANNAH. I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT SAVANNAH. NO SMALL CHILDREN WERE HARMED IN THE CREATION OF THIS BLOG ENTRY (minus the child in this photo).

So, I was thinking of what to write about today that would really help some of us parents/families out. This may be a stretch from my normal entries, since I try to talk more about being a new mom and all, but I think all of us as parents are trying to conserve these days. It’s scary out there. I have had friends laid off recently and heard of friends trying to avoid foreclosing on their homes. Investments are upside down, and many of us are saving where we can. Diapers alone cost a small fortune (big reason for getting the Sunday paper ... lots of diaper coupons), and I tell Savannah every time I change her to really think about how often she needs to go and how much each diaper wasted pulls from her college savings – totally kidding. But, the cost of diapers will be a factor when pushing her to use the toilet.

So, to help all you mommies and daddies out there save a few bucks, I wanted to share some restaurants that offer free or low-cost meals for the little ones (at most places “little ones” means under 12, but if you cry, beg and plead, even you adults can order off the kid menu). If you know of others, please share. And if you know of cool restaurants promoting deals during these tight economic times, share those too. We all need a night out once in a while!

Lone Star
All day Tuesdays, two kids eat free when you buy an adult entrée.
lonestarsteakhouse.com

Pomodoro
Buy one entrée, get a free child entrée, drink and dessert.
pastapomodoro.com

Rainforest Café
Enjoy $1.99 kids’ meals after 5 p.m Wednesdays when you buy an entrée.
rainforestcafe.com

Ruby’s Diner
From 4 to closing on Tuesdays, kids eat free when you buy an adult entrée.
rubys.com

Taco Rosa in Newport
Kids eat free all day Mondays when you buy an adult entrée.
tacorosa.com

Tuna Town in HB
Spend $15 from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday and your kids eat free.
tunatownsushibar.com

Infusion in Ladera Ranch
Recession Wednesdays: Patrons get a choice of three discounted items for $9.95.
infusionladera.com

For other restaurants offering kid-friendly meal deals, check out this article from OC Family.

Dropout Prevention Summit

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

Yesterday I attended a Dropout Prevention Summit hosted by Orange County United Way at Tiger Woods Learning Center. The focus was around what we as a community can do to reduce the number of youth who drop out of school each year. Here's some data:

• Nationwide, a student drops out of school every 26 seconds. That's 7,000 kids per day.
• In Orange County, only 66 percent of high school students graduate on time and ready for college.
• Dropouts from the class of 2007 alone will cost the nation nearly $329 billion in lost wages, taxes and productivity over their lifetime (creating change around this epidemic could help to eliminate the need for $787 billion stimulus plans).

Anyway, the dialogue surrounding what can be done to reduce dropouts and who is responsible got me to thinking about when I was in high school and more so about when Savannah will be in high school or even middle school (this is when students start to lose interest). One of the main reasons students give for dropping out is being bored in the classroom. Thinking back, yeah sure, maybe I was bored once in a while, but I knew without a high school education the rest of my life would be consumed by boredom and monotony. I do think there is a need for more career-based and talent-driven courses in high school (a friend's husband teaches robotics at High Tech High in San Diego – it's an awesome model and something I wish I could have participated in when in high school), but I also believe that this needs to be coupled with the fundamentals. I think more schools are leaning in this direction, and it excites me to think about the coursework Savannah will be taking in high school (who knows what hybrid careers will be popular then).

The other reason blamed for kids dropping out was the lack of parent involvement, direction and encouragement. I was fortunate to have all – thank you, mom and dad – and have wonderful family around me to learn and well, steal from, when it comes to parenting skills. I want to be involved in all aspects of Savannah's life (probably more than she will want me to be one day) and can only hope that my love, guidance, discipline and encouragement (and that of her daddy, too) will result in a well-rounded, respectful, happy and successful child and adult.

There are many more dual-working households these days (many of my friends who have kids are both working), and there are many children whose parents work two or maybe more jobs to make ends meet. I am sure these parents want to be there more for their kids but are working to keep food on the table or pay the rent. For these families, there are many amazing youth-based programs out there that kids can take advantage of and many parents too can participate in. Check out a list of programs out there.

Where my ladies at?

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

This past weekend, my girlfriends and I went out to dinner and a chick flick ("He's Just Not That Into You"). Such a needed release. I can't help but feel a little guilty about wanting to get away from the responsibilities of being a mother and wife to frolic with the ladies. I tend to think that by not spending every minute that I can with Savannah I am being selfish, especially since I am working and only see her in the morning (when rushing to get ready for work) and at night when I get home (packing in as much quality time as I can before it's lights out). Yet, when I take this time for myself and reconnect to my individuality, I feel refreshed, energized and ready to take on the world – or at least the next diaper change. I think we – moms – all need this now and then, and don't need to feel guilty for indulging in "me" time or having our own outlets. I think this "me" time actually helps to strengthen my relationship with my husband and my daughter. And, this goes for both Tim and I. Tim and his male cohorts get together on Thursday nights to play baseball, talk sports and enjoy some male bonding and good laughs (I think it's more about the "liquid warm-up" than the game itself).

My point is this: Too often we make excuses to not get together with the ladies. We are too busy with work, family obligations, etc. I say, stop making excuses and make it happen. Maybe it's a regular Bunko night or gathering to watch your favorite show and sip wine. I know I try to pack too much in already, but this past weekend made me realize just how important friendships are. To all my friends, I love you and let's get together soon.

I would love to hear from other moms out there. Do you have a regularly scheduled "Ladies Night"? Do your husbands? How often? P.S. To Jen: Thanks for planning the movie outing, loved it. Wine and a sappy love movie with good friends ... what could be better?

Makes me think of all the fun times ahead with Savannah and gives me time to perfect my version of the song. No more needs to be said – just listen to this woman belt it out. More power to all you moms out there juggling everything life throws at you with a smile and trying to maintain some form of sanity. You all rock! Have a wonderful Valentine's Day.
9 months, what?

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />
      <SearchEngineKeywords />
      <SearchEngineDescription />

I took Savannah to her 9-month well-check yesterday. How can she possibly be 9 months already? I can't believe how fast this time is going. While sitting in the waiting room, I watched the other families with their youngins and chatted with a mom whose son was there for his last appointment in that office. He was about to turn 18 and was ready to spread his wings and fly, or at least leave the pediatric office filled with fun toys and hard-paged books, to go to the adult doctor's office with newspapers and the latest issues of Newsweek and Time.

Thinking about Savannah turning 18 seems so far off, but when Dr. Chen told me the next time he would see Miss Savvy would be at 1 year, I was taken aback.

Later that same day, I went to have my hair done and sitting next to me was a young girl, maybe 15. She brought in a printout from the Internet of the style she wanted. Black and white horizontal stripes with hot pink surrounding her face. Her mom was the one who dropped her off and told the stylist to do what her daughter wanted – and then mom left. Dad later came and just about had a heart attack when he saw what the stylist was doing to his little girls locks. It was an awkward moment. The stylist didn't know what to do.

I was choked-up for the poor dad, and the girl in the hot seat was adamant about proceeding with the style she said was "totally cool dad and not too crazy." Again, I started thinking of Savannah and how Tim and I would approach this situation. I am not sure I would even allow Savannah at 15 to dye her hair, let alone like a skunk. And if my daughter came home with hair like that, Tim would make her drop and give him 20 and then shave her head. Maybe that is a bit extreme, but it wouldn't be pretty.

I talked to Tim about what happened when I got home, and we both decided it was the parents' bad, not the little girl's, for not communicating with one another about what their daughter wanted to do and setting guidelines prior to the appointment. Anyway, I would love to hear how other parents would handle this situation. Would you let your son or daughter do whatever they wanted with their hair? I don't have to worry too much right now – Savannah has little to no hair at the present – but with how fast kids are growing up these days, she'll be coming to me at seven wanting to get a tattoo or something … AGHHH!

Not like I don't have enough on my plate balancing work; volunteer obligations; the responsibilities of being a new mom; fulfilling my wifely duties by maybe making my prince dinner once a week and bringing him a cold beer once in a while (I am a far stretch from the Perfect Wife); and once in a rare while getting to yoga or the gym, I always have to add more. This is definitely my weak point. I take on way too much, and even though I know this, I still say yes to planning that next party or sitting on another committee.

My latest undertaking: sewing. My mother-in-law got me into it, so I blame her. It started with making duvet covers and pillowcases (pretty simple), and now I have started making baby blankets, taggies, burp cloths, bibs and crib bumpers. I even helped with making Savannah's Halloween costume this past year. I really enjoy it; finding the time to do it is the problem. I guess I will start teaching Savannah how to help mommy pin when she passes the "oral stage."

I love the fact that the blankets and bumpers are one of a kind, not something you will find at Babies R Us or other chain stores. I choose fabric that will match the theme of the nursery, or, just recently, I made a Buffett-theme blanket for little Jack Edward, since his parents are huge Parrot Heads. I am still looking for Obama fabric.

I have received some unique gifts for Savannah and want to share some of the sites. Check 'em out and please share some you have found. I love hearing about creative gift ideas for the kiddos.

iseeme.com
craftefamily.com

Local companies and artists …

childtocherish.com
kaitemerson.com

So, by now I am sure we are all familiar with the case of the local woman who recently gave birth to octuplets. If not, just search octuplets, and, considering the rarity, you will find numerous stories.

Here's one I found a little disheartening about the new mom's request for help from Oprah. Really, she's not a NEW mom – she already had six kids. Hey, I only have the one child, and I would love a little extra support from Oprah, but instead, my hubby and I work our rears off to provide for our small family. Hmm … I wonder how many people knock on Oprah's door for a little handout? I bet she gets a lot of calls that start out something like this: "Hey, Oprah, it's me, Julie. We went to high school together."

Maybe I too would have 14 or more kids if Oprah was covering the tab, and commercial endorsements were paying for braces, car insurance, college. No, cancel that: I still would not have more kids than I can count on both hands. For me, it would be more of a "love" thing. I personally don't think I could give each of my 14 children the love, encouragement and individual attention they would need or deserve. And what about physical and emotional well-being? Even thinking about juggling all that makes me a little nauseous – yes, a bit sick to my stomach.

On another note, it took a team of 46 doctors and nurses to help deliver the eight babies … 46! I had a Caesarean with Savannah (stubborn little girl did not want to flip over) and felt overwhelmed with the five staff in the room; I can't imagine 46 people (92 hands) partaking in what is supposed to be an intimate experience. I guess when you have eight kids (or 14), nothing is intimate anymore.

In any case, I wish the best for the children. If there are others out there who are "obsessed" with little curtain-climbers, but not enough to personally deliver and raise them, think about volunteering to read books to children, become a mentor to a child or maybe a foster parent. Orange County United Way works with many community partners who support kids of all ages. Check out this link to find volunteer opportunities that may work for you.

This past Wednesday marked Savannah's first trip via airplane. It was a big day for both Savannah and mom, considering I took on this first without the assistance of my husband (extra set of hands and added muscle). I have to admit I was a little apprehensive, but I am sure most of the fear was caused by horror stories I have heard from other moms.

I was also a bit nervous because the two of us both have little, stubborn colds (I can't for the life of me remember what my normal voice sounds like, although a little rasp is kinda sexy). Anyway, our trip was a short one, nothing crazy like jetting off to Europe or anything. We flew Jetblue from Long Beach to Oakland. If an airport can be charming, the Long Beach airport has it in the bag. Tim pulled up curbside so I could unload and check my one bag (so proud that I was able to fit a convertible highchair, toys, Savannah's clothes and mine all in one bag for a five-day trip. I usually take more to Mammoth for one weekend). He made a couple rounds and then met me back outside where he helped get Miss Savvy (our nickname for Savannah) in the stroller, and we were on our way. She did so well while we waited to board; she had to google at everyone who walked by – such an extravert.

Then it was go time. We boarded and sat in our assigned aisle seat. The little old man next to us smiled when we sat, but I could tell inside he was screaming: "Why me, why?" Even before we took off, she passed out cold in my arms. She woke up halfway through the flight (I think she knew it was complimentary snack time) and looked around in amazement at everything and everyone. Not a peep. As we descended, she nursed a bottle of water, and then we touched down gracefully in Oakland. The little old man next to us gave Savannah a sweet hug, and the pilot presented her with her first set of wings (I remember this from when I was little). I packed so much stuff in that diaper bag just in case and needed nothing more than a bottle of water and a sweet old man to make her smile (not to mention Jetblue has direct TV at each seat – that rocks!). Now let's see how she does on the return flight (crossing fingers).

For parents venturing on a first-time flight with their little ones, check out travelforkids.com.
First the scoot turned to an all-out crawl, and then came the gestures that melt your heart – hands outstretched when she wants to be held and share her Cheerios – and the first tooth. The past week has held quite a few milestones for Savannah and has made me a very proud mommy – proud, but oh so tired. This growth spurt has turned my sleeping angel into a possessed insomniac. It seems like she is up every three hours again, not so much to eat, but just to be held and rocked back to sleep. I guess I can't blame her – if I had to deal with the pain of teeth breaking through sensitive gums and not be able to throw back a stiff drink or take a good pain med, I too would be out of sorts and need a little TLC.

Anyway, when you're working, the sleepless nights can wear on you, so the other night I brought Savannah in bed with us. She sleeps so much better cuddled up in between the two of us, and we can capture a few more Zs this way. I say that it is only this one time, just until she gets over this growth spurt. But, yes, there has been the occasional night where I am just too lazy to get up and bring her back to her bed after feeding her. I have a few friends that have no problem co-sleeping with their little ones, but I promised myself and my husband that this would not be the case in our house. Is this how it happens? One or two nights I give in, and the next thing you know Savannah is 8 and taking up the entire bed?

When will this growth spurt pass and her regular sleep pattern resume? Until then, I will forge on – a bit sleep deprived, but still with a grin from ear to ear – who could say no to a soggy Cheerio?

Capturing history

Since Savannah arrived, I have tried religiously to write in her journal, making sure to jot down her firsts – first smile, first laugh, first attempt at crawling, etc. I have also made it a point to take her photo with bylines from the paper or magazines that reference historic events that have taken place during her first year.

Savannah sleeps soundly as buildings tumble around her – first earthquake July 2008.

And one more historic and memorable event took place this week with the inauguration of our 44th president, Barack Obama. On Tuesday night, a close group of friends got together for an Obamanation Celebration (true show of bipartisanship with a mix of both parties coming together to witness history and welcome a new leader). As I listened to the sentiments of our new president, I found myself linking his hopes, dreams and visions to those I have for Savannah.

For me, it's a "new era of responsibility" as a parent, in addition to my responsibility as a citizen of this country. He spoke directly to Savannah when he talked about "delivering safely freedom to generations to come," and I am pretty sure she showed her admiration by repeating his name like the millions who were there to watch him: "Obama … Obama … Obama" (or at least her ba-ba-bas sure sounded like it).

It was a special moment in history, and although she has no idea yet the role he plays in her life, she will continue to hear his name and see his face. Who knows, her first word may be Obama, and that would definitely be recorded in the journal.

Savannah celebrates Obama's victory this past November and Obama's inauguration on Tuesday.
I used to "get ready" for work. By "get ready" I mean the normal routine: shower, lotion, blow-dry, style, dress, apply makeup, maybe have time for a cup of tea and then out the door a few minutes early. Those days are LONG gone. Now, even with the help of my amazing husband, I find myself stressing to get out the door only 10 minutes late versus 20, and doing my hair and makeup in the car (the new "hands-free" law makes applying mascara much easier).

Whoever made the tousled-hair look not only acceptable, but stylish … thank you!

Anyway, I have a hair appointment coming up and don't know what to do. I want something new and fun but something that doesn't require too much time to style, since time is something I seem to have lost (if someone could package and sell free time, now that would be a business I would buy stock in). I have always had relatively long hair and don't want to do the drastic "mom cut" (seems like so many moms chop their locks after the little one arrives), but with Savannah grasping at everything, my hair is almost always in a bun or clip.

I'd been flipping through the magazines when a girlfriend of mine turned me on to a site where you can upload a photo of yourself to see "risk-free" what that style you've been eyeing would look like – check it out here.

Well, I will add a photo to my blog after the makeover, but until then, I will give some of these quick styles a shot.

Baby sign language

      <SearchEnginePageTitle />

      <SearchEngineDescription />

I purchased a book on sign language for babies right after having Savannah. While I was at home with her on maternity leave, I would try to sign as often as I could remember when talking and playing with her, repeating my gestures and words time and again. She is approaching 8 months, and I have not witnessed any signing back. I went over to visit a neighbor the other day that has a little boy a week older than Savannah, and he waves bye-bye and crawls at a much quicker pace than Savannah (I'm OK with the slower crawl rate for the time being). I started wondering if this was a product of him being in home-based child care surrounded by other babies and toddlers.

When I had to go back to work, I opted for Ama-care (Savannah's grandma/Tim's mom who has much more parenting experience than I) a couple days per week and a nanny the other few days. I am beginning to think that she may benefit more developmentally by being around other babies her age. I have started looking at more mommy & me classes to take her to on weekends and planning more Cookies & Cocktails (something my girlfriends and I coined) parties with my friends and their little ones (not sure if these gatherings are more for her or me). I would love to hear of classes you have taken your babies to and any suggestions you may have.

Until then, I will keep on signing. I'm sure Savannah's first sign will be something like a thumbs-up, letting me know "It's all good, mom" and "chill."

My sister-in-law welcomed her first baby on Jan. 6 at around 11:30 p.m (just days ago). Little Miss Sia Louise. I went yesterday to visit my new niece and Savannah's newest cousin. Walking out of the elevator on the seventh floor at Hoag was a strange experience.

It wasn't that long ago that I was there, experiencing many of the same feelings as my sister is now – holding a new life so precious, so small with those deep, dark new-baby eyes. The little facial expressions and tiny fingers took me back to those first days with Savannah at the hospital.

Everything being so new and not being able to take my eyes off her, even for a second (fighting the needed naps because I couldn't miss a moment). Tim and I tracking her every feeding, nap and movement (literally, every time she went No.1 and No. 2). The first bath in the small pink bucket and the AMAZING nurses checking in on the new family.

It was close to eight months ago that Savannah arrived, and being there holding Sia made me think it was just yesterday. It also made me think about when I want to do it again.

AM I CRAZY?

Would it be better to have the next one sooner than later so that they are close in age, or do I want to wait a while so I can really baby Savannah, and then later she will be able to help mommy a bit more when the next one arrives? Tim and I experienced some hard times while trying for Savannah so I guess my thinking is … just have fun and see what happens. I would love to hear thoughts from other parents who have been down this road before.

The other day at a friend's baby shower we were asked to fill out advice cards for the new mom. My advice: Don't take everyone's advice. Seriously. I can't tell you how many times I have heard "Oh, you have to breastfeed," or "You can't feed her store-bought baby food." STOP ALREADY. I don't know if it is society as a whole or the media's influence, but I have to refer to my upbringing when I hear all the different recommendations.

Just recently, I had to part with one of my favorite childhood toys, my Snoopy Jack-in-the-Box. Today, this antique definitely would not be approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission! Lead-based paint covered the rusted box that housed the dangerously sharp metal-coiled Jack who lived inside. As much as I played with this toy, I am certain I was exposed to a fair share of harmful materials, and somehow I am here today, healthy and happy. I do breastfeed, but on occasion I supplement with formula … nothing special, just whatever is on sale at Ralphs. Oh, and I have bumpers in Savannah's crib (I made them myself, too), and, if time permits, I do make her food, but I have bought a few jars of nonorganic squash and peas, and she (and I) seem fine with these, too. And I admit, I wash her clothes with mine and don't use special detergents. There … I feel so much better.

Anyway, think what you may, but Savannah is happy as can be, and mom is enjoying life. To each their own I guess. Do what you think is right, 'cause you know what they say: "Mom is always right!"

The other night while doing the usual two to three loads of laundry (is there a Laundry Fairy out there? Note-to-self: Check Craigslist for Laundry
Fairy), I found myself getting all choked up as I folded and boxed up outfits Savannah has outgrown. Maybe the tears were for a couple reasons – one being that she only wore the oh-so-adorable brown and white polka-dot dress twice, and it cost a pretty penny, and two, she will never be that tiny little girl again.

It's crazy how fast she is growing and changing every day. I mean, I get it – water, food, love and sunshine work for us humans as they do plants, but c'mon, I want to slow down the baby-growth rate just a tad. Everyone always says, "Before you know it, she will be driving and off to college," and as far off as that seems sometimes, at others it makes me want to hold her that much closer.

For now, I am doing my best to capture memories I can treasure and share with her later. Blogging allows me to do this and so does writing her letters that she will open later. I also love those hand and footprint sets (check out childtocherish.com – the Tower of Time kit comes with five keepsake tins for your child's first 5 years). I would love to hear other ways parents are treasuring the memories.

Please share!

For the past year, I have been collecting stories from my parents. I send them "assignments" with questions about their childhood, the paths they chose in life, what things they would do differently, etc. I have put their answers and some accompanying photos into a journal of sorts that I read with Savannah. I think I started this with her in mind, but now find myself enjoying it and learning more about my parents with each returned assignment.

Well, this holiday I expanded upon the idea and took it to video (my attempt at keeping up with the new media trends). My parents live in Marin County, and I thought this would be a great way for Savannah to spend time with them without the seven-hour road-trip or hassle of flying. My videographer (husband) recorded both my mom and dad reading the now outlawed "Little Black Sambo" (one of my favorites as a child). Together my hubby and I edited the film, adding some simple graphics, photos and music (thanks to Apple iMovie) and gave it to my parents from Savannah for Christmas.

All of sat around this holiday and watched it probably 10 or so times (now I have the book memorized), and I am not sure who the video was actually for anymore: Savannah, my husband and me or my parents? This truly was a gift that will keep giving, and we are already picking out the next book to be filmed.

As a new mom, I think the one thing that I am still trying to figure out is how to balance being a mom, a wife, a friend, working professional, daughter and still finding time to just be me. It's so easy to get caught up in juggling the lot that I find myself stressing over the littlest things. With that said, I am a little relieved that the holiday madness is almost over. Holiday shopping with an infant is no easy task.

Wait, shopping in general with an infant who is in that oral stage and wants to pull anything and everything within reaching distance off the shelf is not that much fun.

Tonight, my husband and I packed up the car to head back to Huntington from Marin after the holidays spent with my parents. I already feel a weight off my shoulders. After tomorrow's seven-hour drive (give or take a few diaper-change stops and caffeine refills), I can find a little solace in knowing my nights won't consist of waiting in lines at shopping malls, wrapping gifts till midnight or lugging Savannah to another holiday party. No, this isn't to say I won't have other things to juggle, but Savannah and I get back our 6:30 p.m. bath time – and this time is priceless. It may not be the extra-hot, hour-long mineral baths I used to take pre-Savannah, but this luke-warm, toy-filled tub-time is even better.
