Handmade string art spelling a child’s name makes a wonderful personalized baby gift. Or liven up your own child’s room with one of these cool creations. Stains and strings of any color can be used.

Materials

• Wood piece

• Stain

• Stain brush

• Computer printout or stencil

• Nails (3/4 inch)

• Hammer

• Embroidery thread

• Double-sided tape

• Scissors

Directions

Step 1: Stain the wood by following the instructions on the can. Let dry.

Step 2: Choose a software program, select a font you like, type the name and size it to fit your wood piece. I gave mine a dashed border to help position the nails. Print your creation (you may need to print in tiles) and use double-sided tape to keep it in place on top of the wood. You could also draw the design yourself or buy a stencil.

Step 3: Hammer in the nails about 1/4 inch apart around the edges of your letters. Try to put nails at points or corners to help keep the shape true. Remove the paper once all the nails are in place.

Step 4: Start with any nail and tie a knot around it with your embroidery thread. Work your way around the pattern, stringing thread around the rest of the nails. Don’t worry about perfection. When you reach the last nail, tie your string around it. Trim off the beginning and ending tails.
