Once we get that settled, it’s back to the house and the homework begins.
Parents
will agree that homework itself is a part-time job. Usually, the kids
have an entire backpack of homework to complete, not including special
projects like mission reports, desert dioramas or science projects that
may include moldy fruit.
After homework is done on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, it’s time for me to take them to soccer
practice; on Wednesday night, it’s religion class.
And I thought I was busy when I was working full time.
But the time at home has been worth it, really.
I
was able to watch all three of my kids win academic achievement awards
at class assemblies. I was a chaperone on field trips to the San Juan
Capistrano Mission and Riley’s Farm in Oak Glen’s apple country.
I saw my children’s eyes light up as they grasped new academic concepts and as I read them stories in vivid details.
So
when OC Family Executive Editor Kim Porrazzo asked me if I would write
the cover story for this month’s magazine on the changing roles of
dads, I really couldn’t say no. After all, I have lived that role
reversal firsthand.
And I am a much better dad because of it.
